ISTRIA: TRIESTE – PULA the Sunny Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea Page 1 of 4 Bicycle holiday ISTRIA: TRIESTE – PULA The sunny peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea Page 1 of 4 FunActive TOURS / Harald Wisthaler DESCRIPTION ITALY Trieste Start of this bicycle tour is Trieste, the former Habsburg seaport seated Muggia Piran/ SLOVENIA at the foothills of the Karst. During the Roman Empire Trieste became a Portorož busy and rich port. After a few kilometres you leave Italy and cycle to Istria, Slovenia and Croatia. This sunny peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea is characterised by little picturesque fisher villages, small towns on Umag the karst hills, vineyards and valleys. Let yourself be surprised from the Novigrad charms of a landscape rich in contrasts and the various colours of Istria. Poreč CROATIA CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROUTE The bicycle route through Istria runs slightly hilly. The tour is suitable Rovinj for children from the age of 14. Fažana We suggest you this tour as an additional after one of the following PUY cycling tours: Brijuni • Dolomites – Trieste Pula • Alpe Adria: Villach – Grado / Trieste self-guided tour bicycle holiday DIFFICULTY: easy DURATION: 8 days / 7 nights DISTANCE: approx. 220 – 275 km Alps 2 Adria Touristik OG Bahnhofplatz 2, 9020 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee • Carinthia, Austria • +43 677 62642760 • [email protected] • www.alps2adria.info ISTRIA: TRIESTE – PULA Page 2 of 4 A DAY BY DAY ACCOUNT OF THE ROUTE Day 1: Arrival Individual arrival at the starting-hotel in Trieste. Day 2: Trieste – Piran / Portorož (approx. 35 km or approx. 65 km, depending on the variant) After a few kilometres you say goodbye to Italy. In Slovenia you cycle mostly on cycling paths through famous bathing resorts like Koper (Capodistria) and Izola (Isola d’Istria) to Piran (Pirano) or Portorož (Portorose), a spa town on the Slovenian Riviera. Using the ship from Trieste to Muggia the tour can be shortened (ticket not included). The longer version leads through the “Val Rosandra” in the back country. From Muggia both options lead along the coast. Day 3: Piran / Portorož – Umag / Novigrad (approx. 35 – 60 km) You pass the salt gardens of Secovlje, where they produce sea salt on huge areas through natural evaporation, and you cycle over the border to Croatia. Travelling through the Croatian part of Istria, the biggest peninsula of the Adria, slightly hilly to Umag, which historic centre was built on the relics of a Roman colony. Day 4: Umag / Novigrad – Porec (approx. 20 – 40 km) From Umag you cycle - slightly hilly – to Novigrad or Cittanova. This medieval town surrounded by a battlement wall is seated on the water mouth of Mirna. Then you cycle to Porec, the most important coastal city on Istria’s west coast. We suggest visiting the Euphrasian Basilica, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Day 5: Porec (approx. 35 km or day off by the sea) You have the choice: either you visit by boat the Brijuni-islands or the Limski-channel, you enjoy your day off by the sea or visit the country land of Porec. The Brijuni-islands are twelve smaller and 2 bigger islands; the main island Veli Brijun was used by the Yugoslav statesman Tito as summer residence. Today the islands are National Park and only Veli Brijun can be visited by the public. Going by boat to the fjord-alike Limski-channel you might be lucky and see some dolphins. The Limski-channel is a National Park and on the coast you find mussels and oyster farms. Day 6: Porec – Rovinj (approx. 55 km) Have a last view over the picturesque seaport on Istria’s west coast before you leave to Rovinj. The city is surrounded in the west and the south west by the Adriatic Sea. Afar the high bell tower of the Euphemia Church built on the highest spot of Rovinj, greats you. Go ahead, if you would like to cycle to Zlatni rt (also known as Golden Cape), a peninsula, where you find a park in a nature reserve. Day 7: Rovinj – Pula (approx. 45 – 55 km) The last day on your „expedition“ in Istria leads you to Pula on Istria’s south west point. Pula is the oldest town of Istria and its commercial and cultural centre. Enjoy your last day of the tour, amongst various antiquities and the mighty Roman amphitheatre in the centre of Pula. Day 8: Departure Individual departure or possibility to extend your stay. Wines of CROATIA unique and exciting Croatia as a AUSTRIA modern country HUNGARY SLOVENIA CROATIA Croatia, having been eager to experience immediate changes, success and recognition, has, at the beginning of a new decade, totally altered its approach to life and business. A strong desire to earn quick money as well as rapid trade expansion have been replaced by more moderate, longer-term investment projects in the areas of viticulture, rural tourism, family hotels, fisheries, olive growing, ecological agriculture and superior restaurants. BOSNIA & The strong first impression of international brands has been replaced by turning to traditional HERZEGOVINA products, having their origins in a deep historic heritage. The expansion of fast-food chains was brought to a halt in the mid-1990’s as multinational companies understood that investment would not be returned as quickly as had been planned. More ambitious restaurants transformed into centres of hedonism, whereas small, thematic ones offering several fresh and well-prepared dishes are visited every day. Tradition and a return to nature are now popular ITALY Viticulture has been fully developed. Having superior technology at their disposal, a new generation of well-educated winemakers show firm personal convictions and aims with clear goals. The rapid growth of international wine varietals has been hindered while local varietals that were almost on the verge of extinction, have gradually gained in importance. Not only have the most prominent European regions shared their experience, but the world’s renowned wine experts have offered their consulting services. Biodynamic movement has been very brisk with every wine region bursting with life.

  • Abecedni Popis Župa I Naselja Porečke I Pulske Biskupije
mr. sc.

  • Open Borders with Uncoordinated Public Transport: the Case of the Slovenian-Italian Border
OPEN BORDERS WITH UNCOORDINATED PUBLIC TRANSPORT: THE CASE OF THE SLOVENIAN-ITALIAN BORDER Matej GABROVEC Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Anton Melik Geographical Institute, Gosposka ulica 13, Ljubljana, Slovenia http://giam2.zrc-sazu.si/en/predstavitev#v,[email protected] Abstract: Within the programme of cross-border cooperation between Slovenia and Italy, a project called TRADOMO was proposed and approved. Its aim is to improve sustainable access and mobility in the cross-border programme area. Within the framework of this project, we prepared a study on public transport proposing the steps, based on an analysis of the current situation, to improve the system of transport connections in public transport with regard to the needs of the passengers in the cross-border area. The study was made in the towns of Gorizia/Gorica and Muggia/Milje close by the Slovenian-Italian border. With the state border drawn after the Second World War these two towns were cut off from their hinterlands. Proceeding from the analyses of the revitalized traffic flows, we propose a new common organization of public transport in which municipalities on both sides of the state border would participate. Keywords: cross-border cooperation, public passenger transport, Slovenia, Italy 1. INTRODUCTION The land border between Slovenia and Italy is more than 200 km long. National roads cross it at nineteen points, and the railway at two. In contrast to increasing personal transport, cross-border public transport stagnates or even decreases. Slovenia and Italy are no longer directly connected by means of railway passenger transport, and regional, or local, bus transport crosses the border at only four points.

It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. The book goes on to show how the government, opposition parties, dissident intellectuals and diaspora change change groups offered alternative accounts of this narrative in order to The formation legitimise contemporary political programmes based on different visions of national identity. It then looks at how these debates were in manifested in social activities as diverse as football and religion, in of Croatian economics and language. ✭ This volume marks an important contribution to both the way we national identity bellamy study nationalism and national identity and our understanding of post-Yugoslav politics and society.
