Abstract The The present study was conducted in the Sargodha district, Punjab, to underline indigenous knowledge of wild edible fruits as for therapeutic use by the local inhabitants. Folklore traditions with respect to curative flora were gathered through meetings and surveys from key informants including local residents, shepherds, herders, ranchers, traditional healers and herbalists. Rural vicinities were engaged to investigate reliable clients of wild edible fruits. Such studies not just assume a significant role in saving the native medica-ethnobotanical information yet in addition help to update the social status and economic values of the indigenous communities that consequently preserve the global heritage. 27 fruit species belonging to 15 families were recorded in the territory. All the plants were extremely compelling against various diseases and native to the area. The data about their botanical names, local names, families, part used, method of use and used for, all were recorded. The fruits and other plant samples of the investigated plants were collected, identified, preserved and deposited in the Herbarium of University of Sargodha (SARGU) for future references.

ROOT ZONE SALINITY MANAGEMENT USING FRACTIONAL SKIMMING WELLS WITH PRESSURIZED IRRIGATION Proceedings of the Project-End Workshop 2003 Muhammad Nadeem Asghar, Muhammad Yasin, Muhammad Mehboob Alam and Asad Sarwar Qureshi, editors International Water Management Institute Mona Reclamation Experimental Project Water Resource Research Institute In the short water supply environment of Pakistan, farmers try to minimize the gap between demand and supply of canal water by extracting groundwater for irrigation purposes. However, saline groundwater upconing may occur in response to fresh groundwater withdrawals from unconfined aquifer underlain by salty groundwater. Skimming well technology can help in controlling this upconing phenomenon. However, in most cases, the small discharges of such wells cannot be efficiently applied on surface irrigated croplands. Pressurized irrigation systems use small discharge effectively, but the cost and availability of equipment in the local market are the constraints. Root zone salinity is also expected to increase if this skimmed groundwater is used for irrigation purposes, particularly in the absence of proper salinity management practices. To address these issues, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Water Resource Research Institute (WRRI) and Mona Reclamation Experimental Project (MREP) collaborated to undertake an applied research project on Root Zone Salinity Management Using Fractional Skimming Wells with Pressurized Irrigation. This project was started in March 1999 and concluded in June 2003. The National Drainage Program (NDP), Research Component – WAPDA funded this project. Due to its medical and veterinary importance, it is essential to study the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection among humans and animals in various parts of the world. The major objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and spatial distribution of toxoplasmosis in small ruminants (sheep and goats) of north-eastern region, Pakistan. A total of 1,000 ani- mals comprising of sheep (n= 470) and goats (n= 530) were examined for T. gondii infection by using ELISA. An epidemio- logical data was collected in the form of questionnaire.

  • 4. Baradarism and Politics, Waris Awan, Rizwan
Baradarism and Politics of Sargodha District Muhammad Waris ∗ Rizwan Ullah Kokab ∗∗ Abstract Democracy, with modifications, was adopted in the Subcontinent as the system of government during the British rule. Although during the British era, universal franchise was not introduced still the baradari system grasped a major role in the politics of the Punjab. Politics in the area that constitutes the Punjab in Pakistan particularly revolved around the baradari system of the region. The present paper is focused on the politics of Sargodah; one of the prominent districts of the Punjab. In the politics of district Sargodha, about five or six families have been enjoying power. The families who played a vital role in local, provincial and national politics are Tiwana, Noon, Syed, Qureshi, Awan, Kalyar, Piracha, Mela, Lak, Ranjha, Nangyana and Baloch. They make the ruling elite of the Punjab since the pre- partition era. This article aims at exploring different dimensions of politics centred to the Baradarism and its impact on the development of democracy in the province in general and on the district Sargodha in particular. ∗ Assistant Professor, Government College, Bhalwal, Sargodha. ∗∗ Assistant Professor, Department of History and Pakistan Studies, G.C. University, Faisalabad. 60 Pakistan Journal of History and Culture, Vol.XXXVIII, No.1, 2017 Introduction The study of Baradari influenced politics is necessary to understand and reform the democratic system in Pakistan as the politics based on ethnic relationship undermines the culture of party politics based on ideologies and issues. The change in the leadership through the votes of people free from any ethnic bias can promote honest, capable and hardworking leadership that in turn enhances the quality and life of democratic institutions.
