SYLLABUS ANTH 5900.713 SPECIAL PROBLEMS QUEER ANTHROPOLOGY AND ACTIVISM SPRING 2018 Professor: Dr. Jara Carrington Email: [email protected] Voice/Text: 346-201-2888 Office Hours: Tuesdays 2:00-3:30, Thursdays 10:30-12, or by appointment Office: Chilton Hall 308C Class meetings: TBD Course Description: This guided readings course will help you, as an anthropologist, to think more “Queerly” about the construction and reproduction of sexual norms, identities, and subjects in the United States, and to consider how these norms, identities, and subject positions have influenced advocacy efforts for LGBTQ-identified individuals and communities. Like much of cultural anthropology, Queer anthropological theory and practice is by nature interdisciplinary. We will cover influential texts from a range of disciplines to understand how these ideas have helped shape the development and trajectory of queer anthropology. This collection of readings will also highlight the intersections of, and contradictions between, queer theoretical perspectives and ethnography. We will begin by tracing the development of queer anthropology as a subfield of anthropological theory and practice. Readings will elaborate a variety of frames that have been used to study sexuality as an object of analysis, and will reveal influential debates and contentions about its study. Next, we will examine foundational texts that interrogate how sexual norms, identities, and subject positions have been discursively produced in the west. To conclude, we will focus on Queer analyses of activism in the United States to understand how LGBTQ-identified individuals, communities, and activists have worked to navigate, and sometimes contest, processes of state recognition. winner of the 2018 Feminist studies Graduate Student award Stephanie YingYi Wang When Tongzhi Marry: Experiments of Cooperative Marriage between Lalas and Gay Men in Urban China Ang Lee’s fiLm The Wedding BanqueT could be classic introductory material for tongzhi studies and, particularly, for research on cooper- ative marriage.1 In the film, Wai-Tung, a Taiwanese landlord who lives happily with his American boyfriend Simon in New York, is troubled by his parents’ constant efforts to try and find him a bride. His partner Simon suggests he could arrange a marriage of convenience with Wai- Tung’s tenant Wei Wei who is from mainland China and is also in need of a green card to stay in the United States. However, their plan back- fires when Wai-Tung’s enthusiastic parents arrive in the United States and plan a big wedding banquet. As the film critic and scholar Chris 1. Tongzhi, literally “same purpose,” is the Chinese term for “comrade.” Since the 1990s, it has been appropriated to replace the more formal tóngxìnglìan (same-sex love) to refer to gay men and lalas (same-sex desiring women) in the Chinese-speaking world. The translation of xinghun as “cooperative marriage” is debatable, as xinghun literally means “pro-forma marriage.” In other works, “contract marriage,” “fake marriage,” or “pro-forma marriage” are used to refer to gay-lala marriage. Informed by Lucetta Kam’s work, I use “cooperative mar- riage” to highlight that such marriage is not merely functional without sus- tenance, but is contingent on the cooperation and negotiation between mul- tiple parties in the relationship, as my findings suggest. -

Proposals of Marriage in Shakespeare's Plays: A Tabulation Ernest Davis June 2019; revised in October 2020 A lot of couples get married in Shakespeare's plays.1 Most of these couples are in love. And often there is an explicit proposal, either occurring on stage or described on stage. This is a list of the marriages and proposals in Shakespeare, with some discussion. Terminology Being a mathematician, let me start by defining some terminology. I will use the word \love" to mean any kind of personal romantic feeling or sexual desire, whether noble or base, whether by a hero or a villain. Romeo and Juliet are in love; Beatrice and Benedick are in love (Much Ado); Goneril is in love with Edmund (Lear); Cloten is in love with Imogen (Cymbeline). Doing otherwise would require making difficult distinctions, and I'm making enough of those as it is. The emotions of a participant entering into a marriage fall into one of three categories. The partici- pant may be in love with the partner. The participant may be unwilling; in that case, the marriage is imposed on him or her. Or the participant may be unloving; this includes both cases where they want to get married for ulterior motives, and where they are simply accepting it as tolerable. A marriage where both participants are in love with the other is a love marriage. One where both are unloving is a marriage of convenience, or, if they are both royal or potentates, a political marriage. An arranged marriage is one that is arranged by third parties. -

It will respond to these recommendations no later than the 48th session of the Human Rights Council. A. SOGIESC Information National Report 31. At all levels of government, Belgium has developed tools to tackle discrimination against LGBTQI+ persons and vulnerable groups more generally. At the regional level, the Flemish Region’s plan of action against discrimination in the workplace focuses on awareness-raising, self-regulation, monitoring and sanctions. Self-regulation has been introduced through sectoral agreements and an action plan providing for “mystery calls” to be made to service-voucher companies. -

The Strengths and Weaknesses of the ‘LGBTI’ Label in Australian Rights Advocacy International Human Rights Internships Program - Working Paper Series About the Working Paper Series The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) Working Paper Series enables the dissemination of papers by students who have participated in the Centre’s International Human Rights Internship Program (IHRIP). Through the program, students complete placements with NGOs, government institutions, and tribunals where they gain practical work experience in human rights investigation, monitoring, and reporting. Students then write a research paper, supported by a peer review process, while participating in a seminar that critically engages with human rights discourses. In accordance with McGill University’s Charter of Students’ Rights, students in this course have the right to submit in English or in French any written work that is to be graded. Therefore, papers in this series may be published in either language. The papers in this series are distributed free of charge and are available in PDF format on the CHRLP’s website. Vampires in Transition
VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION Daniel Berjano Rodríguez Utrecht University and Universidad de Granada GEMMA 2016-2018 Supervisor: Adelina Sánchez Espinosa (UGR) Second supervisor: Gianmaria Colpani (UU) July 2018 VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION ABSTRACT In Vampires in Transition, I develop semiotic analyses of two key films of the Spanish transition: Elisa, vida mia (Carlos Saura, 1977) and Arrebato (Ivan Zulueta, 1980). Building off Gilles Deleuze's semiotics (1986, 1989) and Teresa de Lauretis' film theory (1984, 1987) – both drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce (1930-35/1958), I have designed three inter-connected concepts in relation to the vampire figuration: 'vampire-images', 'camera-vampires', and the 'phoenix'. One one hand, these concepts aim to approach the films under study through decolonial and trans-feminist perspectives. On the other hand, they intend to draw meaningful insights on Hispanic film studies in relation to what Donna Haraway calls “informatics of domination” (1991c). Departing from one of the peripheral meanings of the vampire – a male sexual predator, the vampire has been designed as a perverse figuration of structural violence in cybernetic capitalism which could help us understand the relationship between massive addictive habits of digital machines and western patriarchal agendas, as Wendy Huy Kyong Chun studies (2016). Drawing on Teresa de Luretis (1984) and my own trans-faggot experience, vampire-images are designed to give an account of the processes of simulation that work to erase traces of exploitation. They depart from Gilles Deleuze's time-images of modern cinema (1989), which imply irrational cuts caused by particular relinkages of sound and visual data. In addition, as my analysis of Elisa, vida mia attempts to prove, vampire-images involve icons of women as objectified or subordinated to men. -

Provitola Transgender Justice and the Administration of Sex/Gender Following the Trump administration’s repeated attempts to further legalize discrimi- nation against transgender people, Heath Fogg Davis’s Beyond Trans: Does Gender Matter? seems a refreshing push for an immediate public policy shift towards great- er trans inclusion. Davis draws from his expertise as a Political Science professor and consultant, coupled with his experience as a transgender man, to ask: Is there a legitimate basis for public and private sector institutions classifying us according to sex and gender? Davis challenges the ways in which sex classification has become an unques- tioned structuring principle of our daily lives, dedicating each of four concise chap- ters to a different case study: government-issued identification documents, public restrooms, same-sex college admissions, and sports. Davis examines a variety of recent legal texts, policy documents, and press articles in a prose clear enough to be accessible to anyone interested in the administration of sex/gender. Indeed, he even includes gender audit documents as an appendix, so that readers may be able to, when relevant, evaluate and pursue changes to their own organizations. At the same time, his focus on reform within current legal and policy frameworks limits the sorts of futures we might imagine when we think about moving “beyond trans.” I. Beyond Trans Inclusion Beyond Trans can be considered as part of recent feminist, queer, and transgender studies scholarship that questions whether existing legal structures are an appropri- ate foundation for resistance movements (Duggan, 2003; Sycamore, 2004; Spade, 2011; Conrad, 2014), and that points to a future where gender might go far beyond the binary (Bornstein and Bergman, 2010; Halberstam, 2017). -

Denying Equality 2 Denying Equality: An analysis of arguments against lowering the age of consent for sex between men. ABSTRACT This paper takes a human rights approach to lesbian and gay oppression and critically explores the arguments used to oppose equality in the debates about the age of consent for sex between men. A thematic analysis of Hansard and newspaper reports produced in Britain during the 1990s showed that opponents of the amendment to equalise the age of consent countered with three key arguments laying claim to ethical principles overriding the principle of equality.
