OFFICE OF CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY RESPONSIVE INITIATIVES Brownies’ Books: Grades 5 & 6 May 2020 The Brownies’ Books are comprised of stories (folktales, fantasies, as well as more realistic stories), poems, games, articles on current events of the era, letters from young readers and photographs. In 1920, these literary magazines celebrated African American identity, urged racial pride, and encouraged its young readers to aspire to positions of leadership within their communities. The books are intended to be read with other members of the family. Many of the life lessons taught in the books are applicable to the uplift of young people of all races today. The office of CLRI, has chosen literary works from the Brownies’ Books, edited by renowned scholar, W.E.B. Du Bois, for you and your child’s reading pleasure. Each literary work has standards‐ aligned reading, writing, and critical thinking activities to supplement core‐curriculum reading materials. The Brownies’ Books are written by diverse authors, and particularly, authors of African American descent. According to historical literacy expert, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, citing W.E.B. Du Bois, the Brownies’ Books are “designed for all children, but especially for ours.” Moreover, “the content of the readings was intended to recognize and cultivate the genius within youth” (Muhammad, 2020, p.152). Please be informed that the Brownies’ Books are historical documents that use period language and phrases common during the 1920s era. While we have maintained the authenticity of this literature, please understand some of the dialects are not common terms or phrases that are widely used today. The text represents people of color in a positive light dispelling falsehood and stereotypes. -

21 The 1889 Johnstown, Pennsylvania Flood - A physics-based Simulation Steven N. Ward Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics University of California, Santa Cruz, USA 1. Introduction 1.1 Thumbnail review of the 1889 flood. In 1889 Johnstown Pennsylvania was an industrial workingman’s town, sited on a flat triangle of ground at the confluence of the Little Conemaugh and Stoney Creek Rivers (Figure 1). Johnstown and its neighbors in the valley—Cambria, Woodvale and E. Conemaugh—housed 30,000 residents. Years of industrialization narrowed and channelized the valley’s three rivers to a fraction of their natural widths (Figure 2). As a consequence, nearly every spring Johnstown flooded. Even so, the water was little more than aggravation to town folk who simply relocated carpets and furniture to upper floors to wait out the water’s retreat. On May 30 and 31, 1889 the upper reaches of the Little Conemaugh and Stoney Creek basins experienced the strongest rains in anyone’s memory. The Conemaugh River at Johnstown rose from 1 foot to 23 feet in just over 24 hours. By mid-day on the 31st, water crept over most of the lower town reaching to Central Park. Although everyone agreed that this flood was worse than usual, residents nonchalant about the affair, yet again moved carpets and furniture upstairs. Like floods of the past, the 1889 one would have faded from history if not for South Fork Lake, 24 km up the Little Conemaugh River and 140 meters higher than Johnstown (Figure 1). Also swollen by the strong rains, South Fork Lake rose steadily throughout May 31 and water began running out its spillways at mid-day. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation examines Black civil society organizations that brought the African- Canadian community closer to their rights as citizens of Canada West from 1840-1901. Past scholars have applied the concept of civil society to White organizations, but the following considers civil society organizations in the context of African-Canadian life. Through a broader discussion of multiple Black cultural organizations, including literary societies, fraternal orders, religious societies, and etiquette groups, “Lifting As We Climb” highlights the community’s training of future activists and the application of the lessons learned within the walls of these groups to “mainstream” society. During the nineteenth century African Canadians experienced the harsh realities that accompanied their newfound freedom in Canada West, particularly from racist Whites. In response, the Black community utilized African-Canadian cultural organizations to create change. “Lifting As We Climb” argues that, while African-Canadian citizens came together through organizational work, for the common and overarching reason of equality, their fight against injustice resulted in the emergence of a Black civil society. -

The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), both of which form a division of the Park Service, began this multi-year historical and architectural documentation project in order to identify surviving historic engineering works and industrial resources in the region. The results of these inventories have been published by HABS/HAER through AIHP, subsequently the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission, and are available to the public. The measured drawings and the large-format photographs produced during this process have been deposited in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Copies of the drawings and photographs have been deposited at IUP. The remaining research material has also been retained at IUP, including the 35mm photographs taken by the HABS/HAER teams, some research notes and correspondence associated with the project, and maps and blueprints of regional sites and buildings. INDEX WILLIAM WHIPPER WILLIAM WHIPPER 1804 The Underground Railroad was “incorporated” in Columbia, Pennsylvania after General Thomas Boudes, a slaveholder, declined to surrender an escaped slave to authorities. The New Jersey legislature enacted “An act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery” (P.L. 1804, chap. 103, p. 251). This law required the registration of births of slaves’ children born after July 4, 1804 and declared such children to be “free,” but bound as servants to the owners of their mothers for a period of 25 years for males and 21 years for females. No provision was made for slaves born before July 4, 1804, slaves such as Betsey Stockton who had been born in Princeton as the property of Robert Stockton, a local attorney, in 1798, who thus at this point was about six years of age. (She would be presented to Stockton’s daughter and son-in-law, the Reverend Ashbel Green, then President of Princeton College, as a gift. In that new capacity, she would be permitted to attend evening classes at the Princeton Theological Seminary, manumitted, and accepted into membership by the American Board of Commissions for Foreign Missionaries.) PRINCETON UNIVERSITY Subsequent to this legislation, no further legislation would be enacted in New Jersey substantially affecting the manumission of slaves. February 22, Wednesday: William Whipper was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Nancy, a black house slave, and her white slavemaster. His father would have him taught to read and write by the private tutor who educated his white half-siblings. The Trevithick, Richard Trevithick’s 2d steam locomotive, made the initial verified trip on rails of a motorized vehicle but collapsed the rails (hey, that’s something that can be fixed).
