Plant Index Subject Index Author Index These three parts of the Cumulative Index represent the accumulated work of the 12 editors of the Rock Garden Quarterly and its various precursor publications. Some of these editors have highly professional editing skills. Others, and I am one of these, find editing to be a challenge to which they have to rise. Inevitably this means that different criteria may have been applied as to what warrants indexing. This presents few problems in the Author Index, relatively few in the Plant Index, but major problems in the Subject Index where the criteria that can be applied are so much more a matter of subjective judgement. This is not a completely re-edited index with every reference having been checked through. Inevitably, there are errors in this index but the value of making it available online alongside the complete archive of issues seems clear despite any such errors. A group led by Ben Burr has been working for some time developing a three-part fully- linked searchable index, and work is pretty much completed on the Author Index. This also involves complete updating of all references so that they can be linked electronically. Obviously their work will be invaluable but it will be a considerable time before the whole project is brought to fruition. Even when the new index is complete and fully implemented I believe there will be value in a traditional index which allows browsing. I like to have the opportunity to browse an index alongside the valuable addition of a fully-linked index and I do not believe I am alone in this. -

The Pontic Alps Magical Lazistan A Greentours Tour Report 23rd May – 5th June 2014 Led by Ian Green & Seda Soylu Day 1 May 23rd to Trabzon Departures were from various points through Istanbul where we all met up at the gate for the flight to Trabzon which went very smoothly. Once there we met our drivers and drove up to the hotel where we settled into the hotel. Day 2 May 24th Sumela Monastery Due to the late evening arrival we decided to have a relaxed start this morning with a nine o'clock breakfast and a ten o'clock departure. Breakfast proved to be an extensive spread and was much enjoyed and the environs of the hotel looked lovely, our tall modern hotel standing proud of a number of lush hazelnut plantations by a rushing river. David had already been out back and had found Dictamnus albus, the Burning Bush. Indeed once on the road, this was the first plant we stopped for. It is a spectacular species with tall wands of unusually shaped pink-red blooms. Ravens and Crag Martins flew overhead as we also admired our first orchid, Ophrys caucasica, and a brightly coloured Clark's Lizard. We parked up about a kilometre from Sumela Monastery. It was a saturday and there were many visitors, the vast majority fairly local, but with at least one other group with similar interests to ours. The skies were now clouding up a little but it was still a fabulous scene all around. The euxine temperate rainforests here are stunning. The variety of shades of green beggars belief and is a consequence of the rich variety of tree species present, as well as a nice mix between conifers and deciduous trees. -
Flora of Alpine Grasslands of the Eğribel Pass in the Giresun Mountains (Turkey)

The study area belongs to the Colchic Province of the Euro-Siberian phytogeographical region. The vascular flora of Eğribel Pass was studied between 2014 and 2016. According to the results, in the study area 230 taxa belonging to 138 genera and 44 families were identified. The richest 3 families are Asteraceae with 39 taxa (17%), Poaceae with 28 taxa (12.2%) and Fabaceae with 18 taxa (7.9%). The richest genera are Trifolium L. and Ranunculus L. (6 taxa), followed by Poa L. (5 taxa). With 32.6% of the plants belonging to the Euro- Siberian Region, 18.3% are of the Irano-Turanian, 3.5% are of the Mediterranean and with 45.6% of the pluriregional or unknown. The life-form ratio of the taxa was as follows: hemicryptophytes 54.4%, cryptophytes 21.3%, chamaephytes 13.5%, therophytes 10.4% and phanerophytes 0.4%. The endemism ratio is 12.2% (28 taxa). Turtle-head by Diana Beresford - Kroeger Once upon a time the Chelones, turtle-heads, were very common on the North American landscape, but ditching machines and road graders show it no mercy. To locate colonies of turtle-head one must search off the beaten track and only then, when it is actually in flower. It is almost invisible at other times of the year and next to impossible to pin down. Turtle-head is also commonly known as snake-head and balmony, depending on where you are located on the continent. It is mostly represented as Chelone glabra, in Canada and Chelone lyonii as you trek south of the border. Here and there in the bayous, C. lyonii has, over time spawned some variant species, C. obliqua and C. cuthbertii. The differences between these species are mostly based on a lack of leaf petiole, making them sessile. The Chelone is closely allied to Penstemon, beard-tongue. They are in the same family and are immensely useful for the gardens of Ireland, England and Europe. Where many of the Penstemon, beard-tongue species will grow so will the wonderful Chelones or turtle-heads. However, the latter have a good heads-up on the Penstemons because they will flower ever so faithfully in August, September and October at a time when quality flowers are needed in the late summer and autumn gardens. The flowers are large, bright and pure at these times and fit well into any garden, great or small. Chelone glabra Chelone obliqua In Canada, turtle-head, C. glabra, is a magnificent flowering plant. -
