Šiauliai University Botanic Garden was established in 1997 at the former site of Agrobiological Station of Šiauliai University. Total area of the garden is 6.54 ha. Since 2003 Šiauliai University Botanic Garden is a member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Planta Europa Network, Association of Botanic Gardens in the Baltic Sea Region, Botanical Gardens of the Baltic Countries and the Association of Lithuanian University Botanic Gardens (LUBSA). Since 2005 the Botanic Garden is a member of International Network of Phenological Gardens of Europe (IPG). There is a Club of Botanic Garden Friends at the Botanical Garden. The Garden exchanges seeds with more than 250 botanical gardens of the world. Director: dr. Martynas Kazlauskas. Fields of research Research on plant biodiversity ex situ and in situ Research on introduction and acclimatization of ornamental plants Phenological observations Other activities ex situ conservation educational activities at the botanic garden organization of events at the botanic garden COLLECTIONS OF THE BOTANIC GARDEN. The garden has specimens of over 4000 species and varieties of plants. The plants are kept in 6 sections. Section of Plant Systematics and Geography. The plants are explored and displayed in accordance with the system of Magnoliophyta division by A. L. Takhtajan. Plant families are arranged in alphabetical order. Since 2000 the section has specimens of over 900 plant species from 92 families. The section is supervised by botanical collections supervisor Žydrūnė Valainytė. Section of Lithuanian Flora. Section of Lithuanian Flora was established in 2011. The section includes herbaceous plants from different ecosystems: swamps, wet and dry meadows, forests. Priorities: rare and protected species of plants, beneficial (medicinal and ethnobotanical) plants. The section covers 70 species of plants included in the Red Book of Lithuania. The section is supervised by the botanical collections supervisor Virginija Aleknienė. Section of Floriculture. The section was opened in 2004. It currently has over 1200 different species and varieties of annual and perennial ornamental plants which fall under 58 families. The largest collections are those of Lilium, Hemerocalis and Iris. The section is supervised by senior supervisor of botanical collections Indrė Šklenikienė. Section of Mountain Plants. Since 2000 this section has specimens of mountain flora from Europe, Asia, and North America. There are over 1000 species and varieties of plants which fall under 70 families. The main priorities for choosing the species are: ornamental features, natural resources of the species, beneficial features of the plant. The section is supervised by junior research associate dr. Rimanta Vainorienė. 3 Section of Dendrology. Dendrological collection has been maintained since 1999. Currently it has over 900 taxons of woody plants. The area of the garden is not large, therefore, it mainly focuses on groundling plants. One of the largest collections is that of Ericaceae family, covering over 300 species and varieties from Rhododendron, Calluna, Kalmia, Gaultheria, Erica and Vaccinium genus. The section is supervised by senior supervisor of botanical collections Vaidas Juknevičius. Phenological Garden. Since 2005 our botanic garden is a member of phenological observations network in Europe. Phenological garden is intended for observation of phenological phases of plants and research on genetically identical woody plants. Supervisor: junior research associate dr. Rimanta Vainorienė. • Suitability of Root and Rhizome Anatomy for Taxonomic
Scientia Pharmaceutica Article Suitability of Root and Rhizome Anatomy for Taxonomic Classification and Reconstruction of Phylogenetic Relationships in the Tribes Cardueae and Cichorieae (Asteraceae) Elisabeth Ginko 1,*, Christoph Dobeš 1,2,* and Johannes Saukel 1,* 1 Department of Pharmacognosy, Pharmacobotany, University of Vienna, Althanstrasse 14, Vienna A-1090, Austria 2 Department of Forest Genetics, Research Centre for Forests, Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg 8, Vienna A-1131, Austria * Correspondence: [email protected] (E.G.); [email protected] (C.D.); [email protected] (J.S.); Tel.: +43-1-878-38-1265 (C.D.); +43-1-4277-55273 (J.S.) Academic Editor: Reinhard Länger Received: 18 August 2015; Accepted: 27 May 2016; Published: 27 May 2016 Abstract: The value of root and rhizome anatomy for the taxonomic characterisation of 59 species classified into 34 genera and 12 subtribes from the Asteraceae tribes Cardueae and Cichorieae was assessed. In addition, the evolutionary history of anatomical characters was reconstructed using a nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence-based phylogeny of the Cichorieae. Taxa were selected with a focus on pharmaceutically relevant species. A binary decision tree was constructed and discriminant function analyses were performed to extract taxonomically relevant anatomical characters and to infer the separability of infratribal taxa, respectively. The binary decision tree distinguished 33 species and two subspecies, but only five of the genera (sampled for at least two species) by a unique combination of hierarchically arranged characters. Accessions were discriminated—except for one sample worthy of discussion—according to their subtribal affiliation in the discriminant function analyses (DFA). However, constantly expressed subtribe-specific characters were almost missing and even in combination, did not discriminate the subtribes.

A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Botany at Massey University New Zealand Peter Ronald van Essen 1992 Olearia colensoi in flower. Reproduced from a lithograph by Walter Fitch in Flora Novae-Zelandiae (J.D. Hooker 1852). Source: Alexander Turnbull Library in New Zealand Heritage, Paul Hamlyn Ltd ABSTRACT The Olearia colensoi (leatherwood or tupari) dominated southern Ruahine sub-alpine scrub is the largest continuous area of sub-alpine asteraceous scrub in New Zealand - the result of a lowered treeline due to climatic conditions characterised by high cloud cover, high rainfall, and high winds and the absence of high altitude Nothofagus species. Meteorological investigation of seven sites in the southern Ruahine found that altitude alone was the main environmental detenninant of climatic variation, particularly temperature regime. Temperatures varied between sites at a lapse rate of 0.61°C lOOm-1 while daily fluctuation patterns were uniform for all sites. Rainfall increased with altitude over the Range-at a rate of 3.8mm m-1. Cloud interception, unrecorded by standard rain gauges, adds significantly to total 'rainfall'. Vegetative phenology of Olearia colensoi is highly seasonal and regular with an annual growth flush from mid November to January.

  • Lepidoptera: Elachistidae)
LIETUVOS ENTOMOLOGŲ DRAUGIJOS DARBAI. 3 (31) tomas 73 NEW DATA ON NEW AND INSUFFICIENTLY KNOWN FOR LITHUANIAN FAUNA SPECIES OF ELACHISTINAE (LEPIDOPTERA: ELACHISTIDAE) VIRGINIJUS SRUOGA1, POVILAS IVINSKIS2, JOLANTA RIMŠAITĖ3 1Vytautas Magnus University, Education Academy. Donelaičio 58, LT-442448 Kaunas, Lithuania; 2, 3Institute of Ecology of Nature Research Centre, Akademijos 2, LT-08412 Vilnius, Lithuania. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Introduction The subfamily Elachistinae (family Elachistidae) belongs to the megadiverse lepidopteran superfamily Gelechioidea and contains presently 805 described species considered valid (Kaila, 2019). The larvae are obligate leaf miners, most species feed on monocotyledonous grasses and only some on dicotyledonous plants (Parenti & Varalda, 1994; Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2005). The moths are small, often cryptic, with a wingspan usually between 4 and 20 mm. Adults are poorly attracted to light and usually escape the general moth surveys and are poorly represented in museum and private collections. Therefore, the knowledge on species distribution is still insufficient. Since the monograph on Elachistidae of Lithuania (Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2005), only few papers dealing with the distribution of elachistid species in Lithuania have been published (Paulavičiūtė, 2006, 2008a, 2008b; Paulavičiūtė et al., 2017; Paulavičiūtė & Inokaitis, 2018; Ostrauskas et al., 2010a, 2010b; Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2011, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to provide new distribution data on two new and another eleven Elachistinae species reported from 11 administrative districts in Lithuania. Material and Methods Adult moths were collected by attracting them to mercury-vapour light and swept from low vegetation in the evening before sunset. The specimens were collected by Povilas Ivinskis (P.
