Lorna Gardner / Gary McQueen _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Harbour, Ep 1/6 NEW Monday 4 November BBC One Scotland, 7.30-8.00pm Aberdeen Harbour is once again the star of the show as the cameras go behind the scenes to meet the workforce who keep it running 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. In the new second series of The Harbour, made by Tern Television in Aberdeen, larger than life barmaid Val Morrison returns with party time at the Crown and Anchor as staff and customers are celebrating a new milestone for the pub. Val’s boss Jill Pirie has bought the business, which has come as a big relief to Val who would have been unsure about working for anyone else. She says: “I can’t imagine my life without the Crown and Anchor. Somebody new could have bought it and said they did not want me. It’s not just a pub to me, and it never will be.” At Aberdeen Harbour’s dry dock, the Skandi Inspector, is edging its way in through the narrow entrance. Thousands of gallons of water are pumped out of the dock to expose the hull of the massive ship in readiness for its regular MOT. The cameras follow Assistant Dock Master Frankie Longmuir and foreman Jimmy Innes as the vessel is brought in and the Dales Marine team of eighty sets to work to repair the ship. There are new faces at the boatmen’s bothy as the next generation learns the ropes. Alan Cowper’s son Scott (17) is now a boatman, as is Norman Campbell’s nephew Gary (21). The two senior boatmen have many anxious moments as the young lads learn the skills of the business. Alan Cowper admits: “At the beginning, when Scott started, it was a nightmare. I was just worried sick all the time.” It’s a dangerous job, handling ropes weighing up to eighty kilos in all weathers, but the two young lads are – they hope – making the older generation proud. The ferries are a lifeline between Aberdeen Harbour and Orkney and Shetland and vital for the tourist business. Welcome to the ferry’s very own “Hairy Bikers”. There are beards, beer and bellies galore when a hundred and thirty motorbikes roar onto the car deck. The bikers are heading for the Simmer Dim rally in Shetland. Tern’s MD David Strachan said of The Harbour: “We are grateful to the many people who have taken part in this series. Some have given us extraordinary insight into how the harbour and the ships that pass through it play their part in all our lives. Others have shared their sense of humour, and given the series a real sense of fun. We hope viewers enjoy the combination.” Hilda McLean TUESDAY 5 NOVEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 45 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ River City Tuesday 5 November BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm This week in Shieldinch…Gabriel reluctantly faces doing business with Mandy and Billy Kennedy after Lenny sells the Arcade from underneath him; relations grow increasingly strained between Stevie and Mark; and Will and Robbie’s anniversary drinks are spoiled by a shocking revelation about Edward’s health. Devastated Lenny’s selling the Arcade from underneath him, but unable to buy him out, Gabriel reluctantly accepts some temporary work at Amber Cabs. Billy breaks the bad news to wife Mandy she’ll not be returning to her life of luxury in Spain – their villa has been sold as collateral for the bungled drugs deal. Lenny explores money laundering opportunities with Paul, deciding the tanning salon fits the bill and Billy suggests Mandy manages it. Far-from-happy at the prospect, Mandy demands a driver so Lenny offers Gabriel, certain Billy will decline. Deciding it’ll put Gabriel in his pace, Billy accepts but Gabriel isn’t thrilled at the thought of working for the Kennedys or being so close to Mandy. Meanwhile, Mark’s feeling flush when his backdated benefits cheque arrives but Stella fears he’ll start buying drugs again. Worried, Stella suggests to Stevie they withhold Mark’s money to avoid any temptation. Mark reluctantly agrees but secretly resents Stevie, believing he’s meddling in his affairs. It’s Robbie and Will’s first wedding anniversary and they arrange to have a drink later. However, Will’s not in the mood to celebrate after discovering his father, Edward, has motor neurone disease. Julie Whiteside THURSDAY 7 NOVEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 45 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tractors & Trophies – Scotland’s Young Farmers, Prog 1/1 NEW Thursday, 7 November BBC Two Scotland, 9.00 – 10.00 pm Young farmers will compete at just about anything. From the coveted categories of Stock Judging and Tug Of War, to the dafter contests of Pillow Fighting and Best Decorated Toilet – you name it, there’s a trophy for it. This year the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs celebrates its 75th anniversary, and three ambitious young farmers will attempt to make their mark in the farming world. John Howie, 24, who runs his family’s 360 acre farm, near Dundonald, Ayrshire and Steph Dick,19, who is in line to take on her family’s 3000 acre farm, near Cowie, in Stirlingshire, are competing for The Stockman Of The Year trophy at The Royal Highland Show. Katherine Marr, 26, a chicken farmer from Tain, is hoping to become the next national chairperson. Tractors & Trophies offers a unique insight into Scotland’s Young Farmers Clubs, past and present, and reveals what’s behind the social phenomenon that is Scotland’s Young Farmers Club – a mixture of competition, dating agency, and rural university. The clubs also serve a more serious function. They are often the only social outlet in Scotland’s rural communities, and provide an essential lifeline in an isolated profession. It’s the glue that binds the farming community together. Tractors & Trophies – Scotland’s Young Farmers is a Rolling Pictures production for BBC Scotland, Jim Gough _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Waterloo Road, Ep 10/10 LAST IN THE SERIES Thursday 7 November BBC One, 8.00-9.00pm Simon and Christine are under pressure as they go up for the headship and they clash over how to deal with a bullied pupil.
