Amongst those were the Cal mac cargo-boats which served the Inner & Outer Hebrides in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s - direct descendants of the famous puffers. Keen model boat builder and Cal mac enthusiast, Donald Meek narrates the story. He has fond recollections of the visits of the likes of the Lochcarron from his days as a young boy in Tiree, and then in Oban while at High school. Many of the crews also came from the islands, and we hear some of the engaging and funny tales some former crewmen as they recall their time on board. Weaving beautiful, and little seen archive with these anecdotes and interviews, Donald and the Cargo Boats tells the warm, nostalgic story of these boats and their special place amongst the islanders of the Scottish west coast. Lorna Gardner / Gary McQueen TUESDAY 29 OCTOBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 44 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ River City Tuesday 29 October BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm This week in Shieldinch…Gina’s money worries reach new lows, forcing her to make a difficult decision about her future; Nicole’s devastated she can’t afford to pay for Gareth’s funeral; and Zinnie oversteps the mark with Alex and Pippa. Gina is relieved when Murray offers a substantial loan to buy Lenny out of the Oyster Café. Even better, businessman Alex McAllister, shows an interest in buying the Oyster – but only if Lenny’s out of the picture. However, on advice from shrewd lawyer Paul Malick, Lenny decides the Oyster is the perfect business to launder their drugs money and tells a shocked Gina he’s not selling. Gina is pressurised by Liz and Eileen to make things right. So when Gina finds Malcolm can’t afford to repair his broken boiler, she gives him Murray’s money claiming it’s a bank loan. Things go from bad to worse when Gina discovers Lenny’s money laundering activities. When confronted, Lenny lays down the law – if Gina tells the police she’ll be held accountable. Desperate, Gina takes matters into her own hands and goes to the police, setting in motion Gina’s difficult decision to leave Shieldinch. Meanwhile, Nicole is heartbroken she can’t afford to pay for Gareth’s funeral but just when she thinks all is lost, uncle Gabriel steps in and saves the day. Reeling from her escorting experience, Zinnie tries contacting Alex for answers. However, Pippa doesn’t appreciate Zinnie harassing her clients and tells her to back off – or she’ll expose all to Zinnie’s family. And there’s new face in town when Alex’s younger brother, Jamie, arrives in Shieldinch. Gina is played by Libby McArthur, Nicole by Holly Jack, Zinnie by Nalini Chetty, Alex by Jordan Young, Pippa by Joy McAvoy, Murray by Brian Crozier, Lenny by Frank Gallagher, Paul Malick by John Gillespie, Liz by Eileen McCallum, Eileen by Deirdre Davis, Malcolm by Johnny Beattie, Gabriel by Garry Sweeney and Jamie by Mark Rowley. Lenny makes a friend in the new supply teacher, but panic soon ensues when it’s discovered the teacher is not what he seems. Kacey’s confidence is wavering as the whole school – and now her family – get stuck into raising funds for her boxing scholarship. When Nikki arranges for Olympic medallist, Nicola Adams to come to the school, Kacey initially balks under the pressure. A few tips from the champion soon restores Kacey’s faith, but a jealous Barry Barry is soon hatching his own plans for the raised funds. New supply teacher Frankie McGregor’s heavy handed approach divides Christine and Simon, but Sue is overjoyed to find an excuse to skive while Frankie keeps her classes under control. The twins Lenny and Lisa grow apart, as Lisa chooses Shaznay and her girl gang over spending time with her brother. When Frankie McGregor offers to take lonely Lenny fishing, Lenny jumps at the chance. Panic ensues at the school however, when the truth about Frankie is revealed and the pair can’t be located. Kacey is played by Brogan Ellis, Nikki by Heather Peace, Barry by Carl Au, Christine by Laurie Brett, Simon by Richard Mylan, Sue by Vanessa Hehir, Lisa by Caitlin Gillespie, Shaznay by Je’taime Morgan Hanley, Lenny by Joe Slater and Frankie McGregor by Duncan Pow. The programme makers challenged six families in Stonehaven to cut the amount of electricity and gas they used by 30 per cent within just three weeks. Given this was during a very chilly April in the North East of Scotland, this was no small challenge but the production provided assistance from engineering expert Marty Jopson and energy expert Lucy Conway, who lives completely off grid on the remote Scottish isle of Eigg. All of the isle’s electricity is generated from renewable sources so Lucy knows a thing or two about energy saving. As well as energy advice, insulation measures and thermal imaging to find energy leaks, the families also had fun with a raft of bicycles wired up to an electric generator to illustrate how much physical energy it takes to make electricity. The home measures were monitored by state of the art devices in each house and the experiment and its results were scrutinised by Dr Alan Owen, Director of Sustainable Practice at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Presenter Kate Humble said: “This project featured ordinary families in a street that could be anywhere in the UK. They weren’t eco warriors and like so many of us really had no idea how to go about saving energy in a way that they could

Running head: SPORTS COVERAGE ON BBC ALBA 1 Sports Coverage on BBC ALBA: Content, Value and Position in the Scottish Broadcasting Landscape Xavier Ramon Vegas and Richard Haynes Published Online First: Communication and Sport 29 January 2018 Abstract Through a mixed-method approach, we examine the sports programming offered by BBC ALBA between 2008 and 2016 and identify the value that the channel creates in Scotland through its diverse sports portfolio. In an increasingly cluttered and complex scenario where pay TV giants Sky and BT hold a plethora of top-tier rights and BBC Scotland and STV cannot fit more sport into their schedules, BBC ALBA serves Gaelic-speaking and national audiences with a regular diet of quality sports programming. Beyond being instrumental to filling schedules, sports content has been a gateway for Gaelic, a key driver of BBC ALBA’s investment in the creative sector and a contributor to the development of grassroots sport in Scotland. However, the financial situation under which the channel operates makes it very difficult to sustain and improve its current position. This case study demonstrates that sport broadcasting offers genuine opportunities to maintain linguistic and cultural diversity in small nations, even in a context characterized by escalating competition, dwindling resources and the proliferation of multiple viewing portals.
