Trusadh: Dòmhnall agus na Bàtaichean Carago/Donald and the Cargo Boats Monday 28 October BBC Alba, 9.00 – 10.00pm

Boats have long been a lifeline for the fragile island communities of the Scottish West coast. Amongst those were the Cal mac cargo-boats which served the Inner & in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s - direct descendants of the famous puffers. Keen model boat builder and Cal mac enthusiast, Donald Meek narrates the story. He has fond recollections of the visits of the likes of the Lochcarron from his days as a young boy in Tiree, and then in while at High school. Many of the crews also came from the islands, and we hear some of the engaging and funny tales some former crewmen as they recall their time on board. Weaving beautiful, and little seen archive with these anecdotes and interviews, Donald and the Cargo Boats tells the warm, nostalgic story of these boats and their special place amongst the islanders of the Scottish west coast.

The Great Big Energy Saving Challenge, Ep 1/1 NEW Thursday, 31 October BBC Two Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm

With energy bills going through the roof, we’d all like to use less and save money and this new BBC Scotland documentary provides some very helpful pointers on how that can be achieved. The programme makers challenged six families in Stonehaven to cut the amount of electricity and gas they used by 30 per cent within just three weeks. Given this was during a very chilly April in the North East of Scotland, this was no small challenge but the production provided assistance from engineering expert Marty Jopson and energy expert Lucy Conway, who lives completely off grid on the remote Scottish isle of Eigg. All of the isle’s electricity is generated from renewable sources so Lucy knows a thing or two about energy saving. As well as energy advice, insulation measures and thermal imaging to find energy leaks, the families also had fun with a raft of bicycles wired up to an electric generator to illustrate how much physical energy it takes to make electricity. The home measures were monitored by state of the art devices in each house and the experiment and its results were scrutinised by Dr Alan Owen, Director of Sustainable Practice at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Presenter Kate Humble said: “This project featured ordinary families in a street that could be anywhere in the UK. They weren’t eco warriors and like so many of us really had no idea how to go about saving energy in a way that they could live with comfortably long-term. That’s what made this programme different. No one was installing solar panels on the roof or triple glazing. They weren't making any really dramatic changes but everyone, including me, was amazed by what they achieved. It was a truly inspirational project and if it can work for them it can work for all of us. ”
