Whether you are participating as a freshman, or are entering your senior season, I am grateful to have you as part of our athletic program. Our staff is committed to providing you with an excellent, positive experience as a student athlete. We will provide the necessary tools for you to be successful at Judson, both in the classroom and in your sport of competition. Also, we want athletics to be a means of spiritual growth for you. Winning a lot of games is not our sole mission. We want to see you grow in your Christian faith and mature in character. Our staff will do everything possible to make our department successful, but it is important that each of you also recognize that you need to share this responsibility with us. It is a privilege to compete in college athletics and I hope you honor this opportunity. I hope that you will realize the benefits you will receive by being a part of the Judson Athletic teams. This could be the best year ever for Judson Athletics if we all work together and succeed in all areas including academics, athletics and spiritual development. This handbook contains the policies, procedures and expectations of the Judson athletic department. Each student-athlete is responsible for the information in this handbook. It is expected that each student-athlete will review this handbook and be aware of what is to be anticipated in your experience as a Judson student-athlete. It will be a helpful tool to answer questions and give you direction in certain situations. I am happy to meet with anyone who has any further questions about this handbook. I look forward to watching you pursue your academic and athletic goals this year. Go Eagles! Judson University Mission Statement Judson is an evangelical Christian university that represents the Church at work in higher education, equipping students to be fully developed, responsible persons who glorify God by the quality of their personal relationships, their work, and their citizenship within the community, the nation and the world. Through a broadly-based education in the liberal arts, sciences and professions, the university enables its students to acquire ideas and concepts that sharpen their insights, develop skills appropriate to their career goals, and develop the skills and commitment for lifelong learning. The Judson community experience challenges graduates to be decisive leaders and active participants in church and society, articulate proponents of Biblical Christianity, persuasive advocates for the sovereignty of God over all life, and effective ambassadors for Christ. Community Standards of Judson University We, at Judson University, do not wish to be conformed to the standards of this world, but pray to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Therefore, for the advancement of the Kingdom of God and well- being of the Judson University community, we pledge ourselves to strive to embody the fruit of the Spirit as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Love - We will seek for others what we desire for ourselves. Joy - We will cultivate a deep sense of contentment in every situation. 3 Peace - We will exhibit the serenity that comes from our awareness of God’s presence. Patience - We will show tolerance when events or individuals behave contrary to our expectations. Kindness - We will balance clear standards with generosity of spirit. Goodness - We will strive to live morally upright lives in relation to God and others. Gentleness - We will be submissive, teachable and warm in spirit. Faithfulness – We will be trustworthy in our relationship to God and others. Self-control - We will channel our desires and energies into biblically acceptable expressions. We humbly ask God to supply, through His Holy Spirit, the power and the will to attain these goals. NAIA Champions of Character Judson University is a firm believer in the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative which emphasizes the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Because of that belief, we ask that each student-athlete, coach and administrator strive be a great representative of the University, their team and themselves. Respect Those associated with sport show respect by treating themselves, other persons, institutions and their sport according to the highest standards of conduct. It implies civilized and gracious behavior to players, coaches, fans and parents. Responsibility Athletes show responsibility by making academic progress toward graduation their top priority. They solve problems rather than make excuses and are reliable team players. Students should be accountable for their actions and decisions, and coaches and administrators should maintain high standards of competence and conduct. Integrity For student competitors and their coaches, integrity means keeping commitments and conducting honest behavior. Coaches must subscribe to and practice the Coaches Code and Code of Ethics, and student-athletes must know and understand the Champions of Character Student-Athlete Pledge. Servant Leadership This core value refers to putting the group first and becoming responsible for personal and group roles while performing at your best. Students demonstrating servant leadership have a primary purpose of serving others while striving to become a personal and team leader. The servant-leader provides a critical service to society and the great gift of good example. Sportsmanship The conduct of educational sports according to the highest standards is our expectation for sportsmanship. Administrators, coaches, students, fans and parents are expected to act correctly even when others do not, and demonstrate fairness and equity in all contests and relationships. 4 NCCAA Student-Athletes’ Code of Conduct Athletics plays a significant role in the holistic education of student-athletes. It is a powerful tool to develop leadership skills and godly character development. Therefore, every effort should be made to demonstrate the highest standard of excellence and godly character. Therefore, relying on God, with the help of my coaches and teammates, I will strive to: 1. Follow all guidelines of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) letter and spirit and place myself in compliance with the association. 2. Provide student records as well as accurate and complete information concerning all aspects of my playing to the NCCAA and other public forums. 3. Treat coaches, administrators and officials with respect as the authority figures placed over me as I represent my institution and the NCCAA. 4. Treat fellow student-athletes with respect and celebrate their diversity regardless of gender, ethnicity or cultural background. 5. Instill godly character in my teammates by demonstrating high standards of personal honesty and integrity. 6. Accept responsibility for my behavior and performance in the academic arena as well as the athletic arena. 7. In accordance with the NCCAA Christian Code of Conduct, all athletes must refrain from practices such as the use and promotion of illegal drugs, alcoholic beverages, sexual immorality, and/or tobacco, including vapor type products & electronic smoking devices. Failure in this type if behavior may result in immediate suspension of an individual or team/institution from participation in the NCCAA.
