www.ausimm.com 14th Australasian Tunnelling Conference 2011 An Invitation Thank you to our Sponsors Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Australasian Tunnelling Society, I invite you to attend the 14th Australian Tunnelling Conference to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, in March 2011. Gold Sponsors Tunnelling methods and equipment have undergone a quiet revolution during the first decade of the 21st Century. Tunnel boring machines of ever larger diameters, covering the full spectrum of soil and rock conditions, are appearing. In the mined tunnel arena, computer guided equipment including road headers and drilling and bolting machines are available as is robotic sprayed concrete equipment. All of the foregoing lead to increased productivity and reduced tunnelling costs. In the design offices, numerical modelling software has permitted improved predictions of soil and structure interaction, whilst computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software has facilitated assessment of a wide range of fire and ventilation scenarios for transportation tunnels. Simultaneously, the project procurement practices have continued to evolve. Silver Sponsors The Conference theme “Development in Underground Space” encompasses these advances through Keynote addresses each day and well varied session topics. Many recent case studies are also covered, providing insight into recent experiences and issues successfully addressed. A truly European flair will be enjoyed through the participation of Professor Giovanni Barla, Turin Polytechnic University, who is one of the Keynote speakers at the Conference. Giovanni never fails to infuse his audience with his enthusiasm and love for underground soil/rock mechanics and we look forward to his address. Giovanni will also lead a pre-conference short course; an opportunity for immersion into European thinking and approaches. Many advances have been achieved across the Asian scene Bronze Sponsor and Alan Morris, Project Manager for the XRL Tunnels, Mass Transport Railway Corporation, Hong Kong will provide an overview of these while also outlining his views on where our industry finds itself in terms of technical developments. Our third Keynote speaker, Professor Arnold Dix, Chairman of the ITA Contractual Practices group and Australian delegate to PIARC in tunnel ventilation, safety and environment will address operational issues in particular in vehicular tunnels. The Organising Committee believe that, as with preceding triennial events, the colloquium will again be the showcase event of the industry. A time to contribute, a time to calibrate yourself against your peers as you consider the state-of-the-art of tunnelling presented and most importantly, a time for making and renewing friendships. Conference Dinner In addition, Auckland weather in early March should be balmy; you will not regret joining us and perhaps staying on a bit longer. PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR – Expression of Interest only Wine and Waiheke Please indicate on Registration Form (✔) Sunday 6 March 2010 Before the 14th Australasian Tunnelling Conference begins we offer an experience of why Auckland is known as “the city of sails”–an opportunity to take part in a full day wine tour of Waiheke Island, which is a 30 minute ferry ride across the tranquil Haurakei Gulf. Having enjoyed the fresh, ozone enriched sea air, you will be taken through some of the natural beauty of the island to experience renowned viticulture, enjoying at an appropriate time some of the fruit of the vines together with some memorable cuisine. Your return will provide unforgettable views from the sea of the heart of the city. The Conference Committee aims to share the local surrounds with you and your partner and a tour will be held if minimum numbers are obtained. Further details will be provided as the Conference preparation progresses and to express your interest tick the tour option on the booking form and we’ll get back to you with details as soon as we can! Or you can email direct to [email protected]. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.

PRE-CONFERENCE SITE TOUR State Highway 1 Victoria Park Tunnel, Auckland Monday 7 March 2011 The Victoria Park Tunnel is New Zealand’s highest priority state highway upgrade under construction. The $340 million project will remove the last major traffic bottleneck on Auckland’s central motorway network and unlock the potential of other significant investment in recent years to improve travel reliability to and around the Auckland CBD. The total length of the project is 2.2 kilometres, from the Wellington Street motorway over bridge on State Highway 1 to the . The project involves the construction of a 450m cut and cover tunnel adjacent to the existing Victoria Park Viaduct to provide three northbound lanes. The Viaduct will be reconfigured to carry four southbound lanes. Also, the motorway through St Marys Bay will be widened to provide five traffic lanes in each direction and a shoulder bus lane. Work started in late 2009. While the project is due to be completed by mid-2012, it is planned to have the tunnel structure built by the time of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The project is being delivered by the Victoria Park Alliance comprising the NZ Transport Agency (owner), Fletcher Construction (builder), Beca (designer), Higgins Contractors (traffic & pavements), Parsons Brinckerhoff (system design). Time: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm Max number: 30 people (book early to avoid disappointment) Notes: Attendees are to provide their own closed toe shoes, dress for dirty conditions, and PPE equipment will be provided. Cost: A$25.00 To register for this tour, please complete the appropriate section of the Registration Form.
