    “September”—Earth Wind & Fire (1978) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Rickey Vincent (guest post)* “Do you remember, the 21st night of September…?” those were the opening lyrics to one of the biggest hits of 1978, and still one of the most entertaining pop songs over the decades. It is a song about memory, memories that have happened, and memories yet to come. A contagious joy emanates from the song, with lyrics that tease with importance, yet captivate with a repeating “ba-de-ya” refrain that is as memorable as any lyrical phrase. The song is a staple of movie soundtracks (such as “Ted 2,” “Barbershop--The Next Cut,” and “Night at the Museum”), commercial jingles, and family gatherings everywhere. With music providing tickles of percussion, soaring yet comforting horn lines, and the breathtaking harmonies, “September” is one of Earth Wind & Fires’ most catchy sing- along favorites. The lyrics spoke of dancing under the stars, and of celebrating moments in our lives. The words captured ideas that seemed so meaningful, yet really were not. The 21st night of September? What date was that? Was it someone’s birthday? How could a song tug at one’s memories, and yet refer to so little? Co-writer Allee Willis has said the date was used simply because it “sounded right when sung.” The irony was that Earth Wind & Fire had had a run of some of the most thought- provoking and inspiring messages in their catalogue of hit songs, from “Keep Your Head To the Sky” to “Shining Star” and “That’s the Way of the World,” there was an expectation of something deeper underpinning the uplifting experience.

    ELIZABETH VARGAS As an award-winning anchor and correspondent, Vargas has traveled the world covering breaking news stories, reporting in-depth investigations and conducting newsmaker interviews. She is the anchor of ABC’s television newsmagazine 20/20 and ABC News specials and she can also be seen on Good Morning America. She previously was an anchor for World News Tonight. During the historic Iraqi elections in December 2005, she anchored World News Tonight from Baghdad. She anchored for both World News Tonight and 20/20 from the U.S. Gulf Coast, covering Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. Vargas has also anchored ABC News coverage of live, breaking news stories including the deaths of President Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, Jr. She won an Emmy in 2000 for Outstanding Instant Coverage of a News Story for anchoring live coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. Vargas was credited by The New York Times in November 2004 as reinvigorating the newsmagazine format with her “intellectually brave” reporting of an examination of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young man whose murder gained national attention as an anti-gay crime. In July 2003, she hosted “In the Shadow of Laci Peterson”, an ABC News special that examined the disappearances of several young women in northern California and why their stories failed to attract significant media attention. In November 2003, she anchored “Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci”, an hour investigating many theories raised in the best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code. In 2002, Vargas was the narrator of the four-part, award-winning ABC News documentary series “ICU”, which provided a unique look at life inside one of the nation’s elite pediatric cardiology intensive care units.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NATIONAL TELEVISION ACADEMY PRESENTS 26th ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARDS Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Sheila Nevins, President, HBO Documentary and Family Dan Rather Receives Special Tribute New York, September 19, 2005 – The 26th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were presented by the National Television Academy tonight at a black-tie ceremony at the Marriott Marquis hotel in New York. The evening featured an impressive line-up of prominent newsmakers and industry executives including Charlie Rose, host of PBS-TV’s The Charlie Rose Show; Christiane Amanpour, CNN chief international correspondent; Bob Schieffer, interim anchor of The CBS Evening News and moderator of CBS News’ Face The Nation; Elizabeth Vargas, ABC News correspondent and co-anchor, 20/20; and Jose Diaz-Balart, Telemundo news anchor, who presented the awards to a distinguished group of broadcast journalists. During the ceremony, the Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary and Family. Nevins was honored for her contributions to the art of the documentary: this is the first time the National Television Academy has awarded Lifetime Achievement recognition to a documentarian. Presenters of the Lifetime Achievement Award included Mike Wallace, CBS News and 60 Minutes correspondent; actress Rosie O'Donnell; actress and singer Elaine Stritch; actress Mary Tyler Moore; and filmmaker Lee Grant. “For more than a quarter century, the National Television Academy has honored the work of the medium’s best news and documentary practitioners,” said Peter Price, president of the National Television Academy. “Tonight, we’re pleased to honor Sheila Nevins, as well as all of this year’s honorees, for their innovative and profound contributions in their respective fields.” In addition to the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award, CBS News’ anchor and correspondent Dan Rather received a special tribute in recognition of his 55 years as a correspondent and anchor.
