Restaurant Industry Insight Crate & Barrel had so much success with their restaurant concept ‘The Table at Crate’ that the company plans on adding locations to 15 more of their stores. The concept is in collaboration with Cornerstone Restaurant Group. J.Alexander’s Holdings Inc. has announced that they are opening a new steak and seafood concept called Merus Grill in the fall. The restaurant will be located in a 7,900 square-foot space in Houston’s Uptown Park. Papa John’s International Inc. has opened its first location in Portugal. The location was opened by franchisee Drake Food Service International. Simply Southern Restaurant Group LLC is opening the first location of their Chicken Salad Chick brand in Virginia on October 2nd. This is the fourth new state the company has entered this year along with Missouri, Ohio and Illinois. Starbucks Corporation will open the sixth location of their ‘Reserve Roastery’ concept in Chicago. The 43,000 square foot space will be the company’s largest location to date. Tropical Smoothie Franchise Development Corp. reached a milestone with the opening of its 800th store which is located in the greater Chicago area. Financial Focus Brinker International Inc. has acquired 116 units of its Chili’s Grill & Bar concept from longtime franchisee ERJ Dining. Evergreens and Garden Bar have announced that they have merged together to bring their mission of health-focused dining to the masses. All Garden Bar locations will transition to ‘Garden Bar by Evergreens’ in the incoming months. Huddle House Inc. has purchased Perkins Restaurant and Bakery for $51.1 million. -

COMMUNITY BOARD 1 Astoria, Old Astoria, Long Island City (north of Queens Plaza), Queensbridge, Ditmars, Ravenswood, Steinway, Garden Bay Across the East River from Manhattan they developed as villages encompassing both residential and emerging industries in the mid to late 1800’s. The Steinway Piano factory built one of the City’s first company towns complete with manufacturing plants, housing and community facilities in 1870. The opening of the Queensborough Bridge in 1909 was a major catalyst in the development of the area. After World War II a many housing developments; Queensbridge Houses, Ravenswood, Queensview and Garden Bay Manor were built. As major manufacturing shifted away from New York City the character of the community has evolved. There are still mid size and small factories as well as many service and distribution operation that benefit from the area’s central location and transportation system. The Entrepreneur’s Space - an incubator for Food & Business recently opened on 37th Street. Queens Plaza was rezoned to bring in residential uses that have transformed the area and brought in thousands of new residents. New infrastructure improvements will enhance the pedestrian and traffic areas. On the north side of Queens Plaza 1 Met Life Plaza is home to Met Life with JetBlue Airlines slated to relocate there. The new Gotham Center on the south side will soon to be home to operations of the New York City Department of Health. New hotels have been built around Queens Plaza that capitalizes on budget travelers.
