NEIGHBORHOODS A brief description by Community Board of Queens neighborhoods, current projects and local economic development organizations. COMMUNITY BOARD 1 Astoria, Old Astoria, Long Island City (north of Queens Plaza), Queensbridge, Ditmars, Ravenswood, Steinway, Garden Bay Across the East River from Manhattan they developed as villages encompassing both residential and emerging industries in the mid to late 1800’s. The Steinway Piano factory built one of the City’s first company towns complete with manufacturing plants, housing and community facilities in 1870. The opening of the Queensborough Bridge in 1909 was a major catalyst in the development of the area. After World War II a many housing developments; Queensbridge Houses, Ravenswood, Queensview and Garden Bay Manor were built. As major manufacturing shifted away from New York City the character of the community has evolved. There are still mid size and small factories as well as many service and distribution operation that benefit from the area’s central location and transportation system. The Entrepreneur’s Space - an incubator for Food & Business recently opened on 37th Street. Queens Plaza was rezoned to bring in residential uses that have transformed the area and brought in thousands of new residents. New infrastructure improvements will enhance the pedestrian and traffic areas. On the north side of Queens Plaza 1 Met Life Plaza is home to Met Life with JetBlue Airlines slated to relocate there. The new Gotham Center on the south side will soon to be home to operations of the New York City Department of Health. New hotels have been built around Queens Plaza that capitalizes on budget travelers. In Astoria along 35th Avenue the expansion of the Kaufman Astoria Studios, the rebuilding of the Museum of the Moving Image and the opening of the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts having given the area cache as an arts district. Steinway Street is the largest commercial with thousands of local shops with many nationally chains represented. Ditmars Boulevard, Broadway and 31st Avenue are also major shopping strips. Still a center for smaller manufacturers, warehouses and distribution, the area has changed rapidly into a mixed use community attracting more housing, cultural and recreational diversity. Citi, which built its first tower over 20 years ago, added a second office tower in 2006. Cit and the neaby United Nations Credit Union provide jobs to over 4,000 people n financial services. New developments in Long Island City include Gantry Park on the waterfront; Queens West with housing between Center Boulevard and 5th Street; and new infrastructure improvements will enhance the pedestrian and traffic areas along Jackson Avenue and Queens Plaza. Hunters Point South is slated to be new development with affordable housing On Queens Plaza South the new Gotham Center, is to be home to operations of the New York City Department of Health. Transportation is being improved through connecting the G and 7 subway lines and an LIRR station at Sunnyside Yards. Sunnyside has seen new development with new office and residential buildings that complement long established neighborhoods such as the historic Sunnyside Gardens landmark district. Woodside is a transportation node with the 7 line and Long Island Railroad. LaGuardia Community College, with an enrollment of over 40,000 students, has numerous credit and continuing education programs including the NY Designs Business Incubator. Anchored by the 1920’s co-ops along 35th Avenue, new 4 multi-unit housing developments dot many of the major streets in all three communities. LaGuardia Airport and Vaughn College of Aviation are major employers and hubs of economic activity. 74th Street, 82nd Street and 37th Avenue are major shopping and restaurant destinations that reflect the ethnic diversity of the Borough. Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst is home to Queens Center, the largest regional mall in the Borough with over 200 nationally known retailers and branches of major department stores such as Macy’s and J.C. Penney’s. Close by is Queens Place with Target and other major retailers. Queens Boulevard has seen new mid-rise residential developments close to Broadway. Maspeth is the home to a large industrial community with access to the New York & Atlantic freight line.
