The organization was founded with the primary goal of reaching European immigrants living in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. By the 1930s, the community had expanded to the Bronx, establishing a second settlement house called Ave Maria House. In the 1950s, the Sisters began reaching communities outside New York, traveling to parishes in Florida, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and South Carolina. As part of their effort to reach immigrants, the Sisters’ became increasingly involved in the religious education of children. In particular, Mother Marianne’s education methods were influential in the establishment of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. In 1924, the Sisters of Christian Doctrine acquired property in Nyack, NY and established the Marydell Motherhouse and Novitiate. In addition to providing residence outside New York City, Marydell became home to Camp Marydell, a haven for children to visit during the summer months. Camp Marydell ran each summer until 1989. In 1999 a new convent which serves as the current place of residence for the Sisters was build on the property in Nyack, NY.
