DESCRIPTORS Adolescent Literature:,*Comics (Publications) : *Critical Aeading: *English Instruction: Fiction: *Literary Criticism: *Literary Devices: *Narration: Secondary, Educition: Teaching Methods ABSTRACT The pdblications of the Marvel Comics Group warrant serious consIderation as .a legitimate narrative enterprise. While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. Mania, and turned himself into MANIAC. Lee also unlocked a heretofore-unknown power to spit symbiote globules onto other people and take control of them. He used this new ability to make all of criminal boss BLACK CAT’S underlings and even SPIDER-MAN his “Made Men.” This was terrible news to Spider-Man’s friend and Andi’s mentor, FLASH THOMPSON, who recently became the all-new ANTI-VENOM, granting him amazing powers and making him toxic to symbiotes. While Flash and Andi were trying to break Maniac’s sway over Spider- Man, they were joined by Black Cat and Eddie Brock, A.K.A. VENOM, armed with weapons loaded with the same substance that created Anti-Venom. With Spider-Man back on their side, these five unlikely allies are heading to confront Maniac, who plans to make a big move at the meeting of the world’s five largest crime families. In a world where the superheroic characters from Marvel Comics and DC Comics, the two major comic book publishers in the United States, are taking over mainstream media via film, TV shows, and video-games, it seems more relevant than ever to look at the way in which these comic book fantasies deal with diversity and the representation of minorities. Currently, one of the versions of Spider-man (the one initially operating in the “Ultimate” Marvel Universe, as opposed to the regular “611” Marvel Universe) is of mixed African-American/Latino origin, joining a growing cast of characters 1 that represent aspects of the diverse social identities that fall under the Latina/o category.

INTRODUCTION This Table came about as a result of the partnership between Zen Studios and Marvel; this license allows Zen to produce a whole range of Tables based on Marvel Comics vast library of Characters. This Table is of course based on one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes, Venom. Venom came about as the result of Spider-Man’s refusal to keep the Alien Symbiote bonded to him, thus it found its way to Eddie Brock.

McAllister Professor of Media Studies Chair of Graduate Programs of Media Studies *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii ABSTRACT As a brand, Marvel has undergone large changes in the past thirty years. They have gone from a popular comic book brand, to bankruptcy, to a licenser of products, to an independent film studio, and finally ended up as the latest branch in the super conglomerate Disney. The brand has been a popular topic of study, as the past few years have seen Marvel grow to be the most lucrative franchise in film history. Past studies have either focused on Marvel's trade story and the economic backdrop that led to such success, or the cultural elements of the films such as plot and theme. In this paper, I want to construct a fusion of these two narratives while taking a close at Marvels past and present. While fusing the cultural and economic elements of the Marvel brand, I have discovered a distinct new paradigm of production and storytelling that will change the relationship consumers have to franchises.

What the NFT World Can Learn From the Great ’90s Comic Book Bubble. (It’s a Cautionary Tale) Lessons for Beeple and Grimes from the days of Deadpool and Spawn. Ben Davis, March 30, 2021 Cosplay enthusiasts dressed up as Harley Quinn and Deadpool at the Romics event, on April 8, 2017. Photo by Alberto Pizzoli/AFP via Getty ImaGes. I was giving a lecture to an undergraduate class at NYU a few weeks ago. NFTs were not the subject, but in the Q&A period one student asked me what I thought about NFTs. I told him I was watching the space, but hadn’t much to say yet, and asked what he thought. He said NFTs were the future, that in a generation they would be the only art that matters, and he kept reeling off prices: this CryptoPunk went for this amount, such and such sold for so much on Nifty Gateway, etc. I kept trying to bring the conversation back around: “Yes, but what do you like about these images as art?” He kept coming back at me with the prices. Finally, after I raised the art question one last time, he said in exasperation: “Ben, when the Maurizio Cattelan banana sold at Art Basel—what was the headline? The money! The money is the art.” (I’m paraphrasing, of course, but it’s close.) Fairgoers take pictures of Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, for sale from Perrotin at Art Basel Miami Beach. Photo by Sarah Cascone. “People are paying [insert outrageous price] for [insert unbelievable thing]?!?” is one of two or three archetypal art stories, as far as the popular interest is concerned.
