SCS Shout out Volume 2.30 31 October 2019.Indd NOVEMBER 2019 | THIRD TERM | VOLUME 2 #30 Introducing Coach Tholang Hlalele – aka Coach T! I met a young Tholang Hlalele in 2013 and we immediately became friends. We spoke for hours on end about various topics, including the skills of players and how to improve them. I was always engaged in what he had to say and he usually left me going home with much food for thought. We spoke about politics, sport, religion, architecture, history - and our futures. We have spent many a tour together, both locally and abroad. We dreamt about all the wonderful things we could be one day, if we just worked hard and perse- vered. A few years before I met Coach Tholang, he had lost his job and had been unemployed for some time. Sport gave him an opportunity back into the working world through a coaching opportunity offered to him by Kurt Human, where he had the task of initiating and growing women’s cricket within the Gauteng Cricket Hub Programme in Soweto. Hard work, dedication, and passion ensured that his labour would bear fruit. Coach Tholang had a team that was training regularly and he soon had it registered in the league. In the first year of competition, he just so happened to win the local primary school league and, not long after that, he had developed a fully-fledged programme, which allowed for primary school fixtures, as well as high school and club fixtures. Coach Tholang had not only rescued himself from unemployment, but he had brought competitive cricket to the girls of Soweto. Cricket was the medium through which he could change lives - and he did. In 2016, he and I were selected to coach the Gauteng Provincial U19 Girls’ Team. We shook hands and were ready to roll up our sleeves. We took that team to the Cricket South Africa National Week in Pretoria, where sixteen teams from around the country arrived to compete. We ended up winning the week and three of our players were selected to represent the Proteas U19 Team. Believe it or not, but two of these girls started playing cricket in the very same programme that was begun in Soweto Hub by Coach Tholang. That triumph was just surreal for us! Today one of those girls, Palesa Mapoo, represents The South African National Academy and Coach Tholang’s programme in Soweto has produced three South African U19 representatives. I’m sure many more are on the way! I am so very proud of Coach Tholang and the work he has put in to achieve such success. We are fortunate to have him as part of Steyn City School and coaching our young players. A big thank you must go to our champion coach and we are so grateful that the students of Steyn City School can benefit from his wisdom and skill! All matches are against equivalent teams unless otherwise stated. CRICKET RESULTS 17 OCTOBER Vs Kyalami Preparatory School U9 Boys’ Match was abandoned owing to inclement weather (R. GRADE 4 TO THE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE Last week the Grade 4s jumped on their bicycles and rode off merrily to the Steyn City Equestrian Centre. There, Sarah had the children work in pairs to groom the ponies (they also polished their hooves), they took the ponies on a lovely long walk, learnt how to assemble the bridles, and then put them onto the ponies. It was an amazing learning experience. The cycle back was a bit more diffi cult as it was uphill. The Grade 4s learnt the rules of bike riding in Physical Education and were superstars who put their new-found knowl- edge to excellent use. It was a fantastic adventure! Much like the UN, the ICC brings representatives from all cricket-playing countries together to make administrative decisions about the future of cricket. Unlike the UN, however, not all countries have an equal input; the ICC decides which members are worthy of “Test” status (Full Members), and which are not (Associate Members). While the Council has experienced many successes, including hosting the prestigious World Cup and promoting cricket at a grassroots level, it also continues to receive its fair share of criticism, predominantly regarding the ICC’s perceived obstruction of the growth of the game within non- traditionally cricketing nations and prioritizing the commercialization of the sport over globalizing it.

A time when full contact sport no longer holds centre stage. It is a passage of time when the art of sport is appreciated over the physicality of competition. Today, latent skills and blossoming talent has a place amongst our youth and the generations to come. It is now the subtle brilliance of deftness, the art of touch, mastery of stroke and pure strategic guile that has turned cricket into the sport of the future. Today cricket is the stage for mental agility and peak physical condition. It is purity of both mind and spirit that produces champions. The re-invention of cricket globally has rejuvenated a desire to master the ultimate game. A sense of camaraderie pursued by both men and women alike. It’s now a passion for gamesmanship, integrity, honesty and fair play. It is a game that can be embraced and played or supported by everyone. We can’t undo the past, but we can shape the future. talk The Staff Newsletter March 2010 statistics reveal interesting trends in study choices More students in 2010 EARLY figures already show an increase in student enrolments of 4.3% compared to the same time in 2009 (see page 6). This is an indication that our vigorous marketing campaign to ensure that prospective students applied to study here before the official closing date on 1 August and again, by the late cut-off date of 4 December paid off. Apart from the 12% increase in applications by 1 August 2009, NMMU’s flagship programmes, such as the BCom for Chartered Accountants, again attracted a significant number of students from all over the country. Indeed, 13 of the first 23 Vice- Chancellor’s Scholarship recipients this year also enrolled for BCom programmes. ‘’The chosen fields of study are very much in line with national trends,” acting marketing manager christelle Feyt told talk@nmmu. ‘’Research indicates that business, commerce and management studies are the most popular GEARED FOR SUCCESS … Vice-Chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz is joined by some of the first recipients of the study fields among school leavers nationwide, prestigious NMMU’s VC Scholarship (back from left) Matthew Nicholls, Anrich Geldenhuys, Timothy Olls, Michael followed by fields in manufacturing, engineering Gossman, Deanne Nolte and Caitlyn Allen (seated), who finished second in the province.
