11 IN THE WINGS Arts-In-Education Program

The 2002-2003 IN THE WINGS Arts-In-Education Program marks its 15,h anniversary this season serving primarily at-risk/economically disadvantaged youth and their families, and some adults and senior citizens through 93 different area social service organizations and 250 public and private schools in Allen County and surrounding counties. IN THE WINGS provides a "free ticket" program for all of the main stage productions, study guides with tests and answer keys, outreach workshops, and Civic Theatre tours and acts as a resource for teachers and coordinators by making available any assistance they may need to provide their participants with theatrical experiences and knowledge.

It is the goal of IN THE WINGS to help school teachers and social service agencies empower their youth through the theatre arts. Theatre actively involves the audience to use critical thinking skills by creating a setting that allows them to see things from another's perspective, while reflecting on their own lives. Theatre can take us around the world, teach us about other cultures past and present, and show us social history in the making. Theatre motivates! It is good training in expanding the minds ability to think in new directions. It allows a child to slow down enough to absorb, reflect, and think in a world filled with fast-paced edits and subliminal messages that teach ihe:im only to react.

It is also the goal of IN THE WINGS to introduce these youth to the inner workings of theatre and involve them in the productions themselves. Theatre is a microcosm of society and the skills and social behaviors that are developed through participation in this art form include creative thinking, problem solving, public speaking, responsibility, commitment, teamwork, and learning to work with people from all walks of life. By teaching at-risk youth these life skills, they can be motivated to become productive members of society and assets to the community.

The IN THE WINGS program reaches further into the community through several collaborative theatre programs. It continues to provide adult acting classes through the Fort Wayne Community Schools' Neighborhood Connection and a youth-oriented Theatre Team Program through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The IN THE WINGS program is funded in part by grants from the following:

RMSM Foundation Edward M. & Mary McCrea Wilson Foundation Poinsatte-Altman Foundation Sledd Foundation Foundation Marshall Fields Target Stores Helen VanArnam Foundation

A special thank-you to Channel 2lAlive, who has offered continued video support for our Theatre Team Program, allowing us to attain the true vision of our mission!

13 Guest Director's Notes

Harvey Cocks, current Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Youtheatre recently won the George Koegel Lifetime achievement award from the Civic Theatre for years of support within the Arts Community.

Starring tonight: John Gilbert, Norma Tallmadge, William Haines & Florence Lawrence! Film groupies of today may not recognize these stratospheric stars, but once upon a time if anyone of these people dared to venture in public, they were besieged by "autograph-hounds," and mobs of adoring fans tore at their clothes and screamed their names! Their names alone on movie theatre marques assured hefty receipts for box offices from coast to coast! Who were these illustrious actors? They were the stars of the silent screen and as popular, in their time, as the likes of Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt or Sandra Bullock are in today's movie firmament. What happened to make them overnight has-beens? Talking pictures, or "talkies," as rhey were referred to at the beginning of the sound era, brought about their hasty demise. Sadly, when given the opportunity to voice their scripted lines, the results were so disastrous that all would disappear as suddenly as though they had been lost at sea. The first time that audiences heard the voice of John Gilbert, long Hollywood's greatest romantic leading man, they laughed hysterically. Norma Tallmadge - about whom the character of Lina Lamont in Singin In The Rain is fashioned - had a voice that was never allowed to be heard outside of the recording studio. William Haines was found to have a lisp. Florence Lawrence, who had been the very first movie star, the very first actress to receive billing on a frame of film, was gone in a flash! Ihe need for new faces and new, cultured voices to replace Hollywood's many fallen screen idols brought about the importation of actors from the New York stage where "they knew how to talk." The result was movie stardom and legendary fame for Frederic March, Bette Davis, Spencer Tracey, James Cagney, Jeanette MacDonald, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire to name but a few. (Many of them remain familiar through the medium of television.) Don Juan, (1926) was the first film to have a sound track, but it was composed only of sound effects such as the swishing sound of the swords as John Barrymore dueled with Montague Love. The Jazz Singer followed in 1927. Al Jolson's singing of three songs and a tidbit of dialogue - including his famous line, "You ain't heard nothin yet" - completed the film revolution. Next came the first "all talking" movie The Lights of New York and silent movies became a thing of the past.

14 Happily, when Betty Comden and Adolph Green were hired to write a musical based on the coming of sound, they approached it with their eyes on comedy. Their stage adaptation of the now legendary motion picture Singin In The Rain remains true to the original. It is our hope that you will find our new faces, new voices and our 50th anniversary production a laugh-filled toe-tapping musical feast for your senses!

Assistant Director Christopher J. Murphy is an award- winning actor and director recognizable to Civic audi ences from such scenery-chewing performances as Pickering in My Fair Lady, Pcllinore in Camelot and Capt. Hook in Peter Pan. Other local credits include Moon over Buffalo, Lend Me a Tenorand, most recently. Run for Your Wife. He has also helmed such productions as The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Our Town for the Youtheatre, as well as The Sunshine Boys, La Cage aux Folks zx\d Anything Goes for Arena Dinner Theatre. Murphy will be "stepping out of the Rain' to join his friends and collabora tors, Angela Craft and Andrew Gross, in directing another classic musical, Gypsy for Arena this August.

Choreographer Abigail Adams Ehinger has been performing leading roles and choreographing musicals since the age of thirteen. This show marks her 99,h musical production. She is a four-time Anthony Award winner (Anna in The King and/, Miss Adelaide in Guys & Dolls, Peter Pan in Peter Pan) and was last seen on the Civic Stage in the "Steam Heat" dancin role of Gladys (Anthony Award) in The Pajama Game. Abby (doing double-duty) has brilliantly choreographed this entire production of Singin in the Rain in addition to playing the role of Lina Lamont ("note: Abby really does know how to sing!). She would like to give a special thanks to her family and Vera Bradley friends for all their support! And to the "lunch bunch' thii s ones for you.
