  • CHICAGO to Tour Australia in 2009 with a Stellar Cast
MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed until 6pm November 12, 2008 We had it coming…CHICAGO to tour Australia in 2009 with a stellar cast Australia, prepare yourself for the razzle-dazzle of the hit musical Chicago, set to tour nationally throughout 2009 following a Gala Opening at Brisbane‟s Lyric Theatre, QPAC. Winner of six Tony Awards®, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago is Broadway‟s longest-running Musical Revival and the longest running American Musical every to play the West End. It is nearly a decade since the “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery” played in Australia. Known for its sizzling score and sensational choreography, Chicago is the story of a nightclub dancer, a smooth talking lawyer and a cell block of sin and merry murderesses. Producer John Frost today announced his stellar cast: Caroline O’Connor as Velma Kelly, Sharon Millerchip as Roxie Hart, Craig McLachlan as Billy Flynn, and Gina Riley as Matron “Mama” Morton. “I‟m thrilled to bring back to the Australian stage this wonderful musical, especially with the extraordinary cast we have assembled. Velma Kelly is the role which took Caroline O‟Connor to Broadway for the first time, and her legion of fans will, I‟m sure, be overjoyed to see her perform it once again. Sharon Millerchip has previously played Velma in Chicago ten years ago, and since has won awards for her many musical theatre roles. She will be an astonishing Roxie. Craig McLachlan blew us all away with his incredible audition, and he‟s going to astound people with his talent as a musical theatre performer.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION I am keenonlearningEnglishandI have always lookedfor different andnew ways of how toapproachnot onlylanguage understandingbut alsothe knowledge about Englishspeakingcountries.I am also interestedinmanycultural events suchas theatre, concerts ordancing.I was lookingfor somethingthat would connect allthesethingsand I foundit ina musical theatre.I have always beencurious about what it is like tobe an actor, toprepare for a show, tostandonthe stage andhow the actors feel whenthey hear the applause.I have never hada chance tolive this throughbut onthe suggestion of my supervisor I decided to pursue this topic and to deal with the musical called Chicago andBobFosse,itsco-directorandchoreographer. There are manyversions of this musical that were performedall over the world during the second half of the twentieth century. Maurine Dallas Watkins created the play in the 1920s and it was remade as the musical only in the 1960s, when the copyright was soldtoBob Fosse.Finally,in2002, Chicago was filmed withthe actors such as Renée Zellwerger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta Jones appearing in the leadingroles. The first part of the thesis deals with the basic introduction of the American musical and with some terms that are closely related to Bob Fosse’s work and are necessaryto beunderstoodinthecontextofthe thesis. The second section introduces Bob Fosse and his status in American musical theatre. However, inthis partI alsomentiontwoother men–JohnKander andFredEbb - whowere veryimportant for the musical theatre inthe time whenFosse created his bestworks. 3 The complexview of the musical Chicago basedonthe Czechtranslationof the libretto, translated by Ivo Havlů in 1978, is provided in the third part. Owing to the unavailabilityof the original libretto,I use Englishtranslations of citations inthe text andthe CzechversionI put intofootnotes. If words inthe film script correspondedwith wordsinthelibretto, thenIusedthemfortranslation.Theothercitationsweretranslated bytheauthor.

  • Connecting the Dots: a History of Stephen Sondheim’S
CONNECTING THE DOTS: A HISTORY OF STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE A THESIS IN Theatre Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by REBECCA H. RUBINO B.A., Chapman University, 2010 Kansas City, Missouri 2012 © 2012 REBECCA H. RUBINO ALL RIGHTS RESERVED CONNECTING THE DOTS: A HISTORY OF STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE Rebecca H. Rubino, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT This thesis is a history of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George (1984), which was inspired by Georges Seurat’s masterpiece: Un dimanche à la Grande Jatte (1886). By first examining the lives and careers of Seurat and Sondheim, a foundation is established to take a deeper look into the creation of this musical. It becomes clear how the lives of these two men intertwined to form a groundbreaking show. From its moment of conception to its closing night on Broadway, the history of the musical theatre piece is chronicled in detail. Through the recollections of the show’s creators, stars, and critics, the ups and downs of this journey are revealed. Four other productions of this show are explored, all of which opened after the completion of the original Broadway run. These versions were put on at different times in various locations and take on unconventional styles, but each one proves that Sunday in the Park with George remains a Sondheim classic that has the power to change lives as it did history.

  • Intermediate Jazz Dance History
Intermediate Jazz Dance History DEFINITION: Jazz dance is identifiable by its syncopated rhythms (accenting the offbeat) and isolated moving body parts. Jazz styles include movements that are sharp or smooth, fast or slow, exaggerated or subtle. BRIEF HISTORY: Jazz dance reflects the American historical events, cultural changes, ethnic influences and especially the evolution of music and social dances. The essence of jazz dance is its bond to jazz music. Jazz dance was born out of the combination of African and European influences. When the African slaves were brought to America, with them came the syncopated rhythms that were inherent among African folk songs and dances. As some of the white plantation owners observed and participated in the songs and dances, they added new ideas and styles to the dance steps which were influenced from folk dances from their European homelands. The popularity of jazz grew out of the plantation and into traveling entertaining groups called minstrel shows. During the Roaring Twenties, dance halls became a popular hangout for the young and spirited. In the 1930’s, Blues became the new sound of the 1930’s and was heard in great symphonic jazz orchestras such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. This was the swing era, and dance interpreted the energy with the vigorous lindy hop, jitterbug and boogie woogie dances. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers starred in films that promoted jazz. Ballroom dance evolved into its own distinct dance form. In the 1940's, with the onset of World War II, the popularity of jazz dance enjoyed in the dance halls diminished.
