Summer may be NYC’s most underrated season. The combination of so many people in and out on vacations, or going out to summer homes, or taking day trips to nearby spots like Long Beach and Jones Beach, gives summer here a distinctly different vibe than the rest of the year, a less crowded vibe with longer days and sunny skies. And I dig it. The fewer people makes getting around the city a breeze, booking a table at any restaurant is never easier, and the access to glimmering rooftop pools and breezy bars (check out our favorites on page 32) offers countless seasonal options for where to relax and enjoy the slightly slower pace, azure blue skies and warm weather. And this time of year may be the best for events, concerts and music festivals. The line ups from Memorial Day to Labor Day are always epic. This month is case in point, with two that I will definitely be attending… the 10th annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at Liberty State Park and Governors Ball Music Festival in Randall’s Island Park. Talk about two experiences that are great times, these two have our editor and me ready to go right now. The styles, the talent, the artists - cocktails, champagne, and sunshine…. incredible. So, you can give me Hamptons fun, South Beach get-aways, or even trips back to LA for that matter, and I love them all as well, but pick a few choice weekends in the city when the energy has calmed a bit and the honking is a little less than normal, throw in a polo match, a rooftop poolside afternoon or a sick music festival on Randall’s Island, and I’ll stick by my statement, summer may be the most underrated season in NYC. And I love it. Cheers to June friends, and thanks for picking up our summer kick off issue. There’s a lot going on this month, so get a comfortable spot to read it all. We hope you enjoy your copy of NYC Monthly. Thanks, Ron RON SPEARS PUBLISHER [email protected] NYCM june TOP Stop and Smell the Rosés 10 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (6/3), held each year at Liberty State Park. Pacific Conservatory Theatre Student Matinee Program Presents August Wilson’s Fences Generously sponsored by Franca Bongi-Lockard Nancy K. Johnson A Study Guide for Educators Welcome to the Pacific Conservatory Theatre A NOTE TO THE TEACHER Thank you for bringing your students to PCPA at Allan Hancock College. Here are some helpful hints for your visit to the Marian Theatre. The top priority of our staff is to provide an enjoyable day of live theatre for you and your students. We offer you this study guide as a tool to prepare your students prior to the performance. SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENT ETIQUETTE Note-able behavior is a vital part of theater for youth. Going to the theater is not a casual event. It is a special occasion. If students are prepared properly, it will be a memorable, educational experience they will remember for years. 1. Have students enter the theater in a single file. Chaperones should be one adult for every ten students. Our ushers will assist you with locating your seats. Please wait until the usher has seated your party before any rearranging of seats to avoid injury and confusion. While seated, teachers should space themselves so they are visible, between every groups of ten students. Teachers and adults must remain with their group during the entire performance. 2. Once seated in the theater, students may go to the bathroom in small groups and with the teacher's permission. Please chaperone younger students. Once the show is over, please remain seated until the House Manager dismisses your school. 3. Please remind your students that we do not permit: - food, gum, drinks, smoking, hats, backpacks or large purses - disruptive talking.

  • CHICAGO to Tour Australia in 2009 with a Stellar Cast
MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed until 6pm November 12, 2008 We had it coming…CHICAGO to tour Australia in 2009 with a stellar cast Australia, prepare yourself for the razzle-dazzle of the hit musical Chicago, set to tour nationally throughout 2009 following a Gala Opening at Brisbane‟s Lyric Theatre, QPAC. Winner of six Tony Awards®, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago is Broadway‟s longest-running Musical Revival and the longest running American Musical every to play the West End. It is nearly a decade since the “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery” played in Australia. Known for its sizzling score and sensational choreography, Chicago is the story of a nightclub dancer, a smooth talking lawyer and a cell block of sin and merry murderesses. Producer John Frost today announced his stellar cast: Caroline O’Connor as Velma Kelly, Sharon Millerchip as Roxie Hart, Craig McLachlan as Billy Flynn, and Gina Riley as Matron “Mama” Morton. “I‟m thrilled to bring back to the Australian stage this wonderful musical, especially with the extraordinary cast we have assembled. Velma Kelly is the role which took Caroline O‟Connor to Broadway for the first time, and her legion of fans will, I‟m sure, be overjoyed to see her perform it once again. Sharon Millerchip has previously played Velma in Chicago ten years ago, and since has won awards for her many musical theatre roles. She will be an astonishing Roxie. Craig McLachlan blew us all away with his incredible audition, and he‟s going to astound people with his talent as a musical theatre performer.
