WELCOME TO THE THIRD ANNUAL CINETOPIA FILM FESTIVAL!

It’s with excitement and a great sense of anticipation that the Michigan Theater and Detroit Institute of Arts will once again be a part of this ambitious five-day celebration of the art—and joy—of motion pictures. A true world-class international film festival, Cinetopia was born three years ago thanks to the vision and tireless efforts of the many dedicated staffers and programmers at Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater.

Last year, for the first time, Cinetopia expanded its offerings to the DIA so that metro Detroiters could also experience the festival’s rich bounty of contemporary world cinema—“the best films from the world’s best festivals”—allowing the DIA’s year-round Detroit Film Theatre programming to be supplemented by an up- to-the-minute, truly festive event designed to give area film lovers such a wide selection of films that every visitor has the ability to virtually design their own personalized festival experience, one that can run from Wednesday through Sunday, or for just a single day.

The ability to experiment, to experience the newest and most fiercely independent cinematic visions (as well as a few overlooked classics) without preconceived notions as to what you’re going to see is what provides the electricity at any good film festival; what one leaves with is a sense of discovery, and to achieve that in the most satisfying way invites total immersion. Plunging right in—seeing many different kinds of films over the course of a few days and discussing them with fellow film lovers and filmmakers over a drink or a between- film meal—is what makes a good festival far more than simply catching a movie.

A major new development this year is that Cinetopia’s expansion to Detroit doesn’t only mean the DIA. Other screening venues in the area include the College for Creative Studies, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Arab American National Museum and Cinema Detroit. Together with Ann Arbor’s theaters, the good news for southeast Michigan movie lovers is that 110 screenings will take place in 10 venues over the five days of Cinetopia—a far-reaching yet highly accessible cinematic tsunami.

None of this could happen without generous support, including this year’s Presenting Sponsors: THE KNIGHT FOUNDATION, TOYOTA, MGM GRAND DETROIT, AT&T and MASCO CORPORATION FOUNDATION. We’d be remiss in not thanking the DFT’s year-round sponsor and friend, BUDDY’S PIZZA, as well as DETROIT PUBLIC TELEVISION and of course the Michigan Theater and DIA’s extraordinary staff and volunteers.

So, for the next five days, we hope that those of you with a cautious nature will consider setting it aside and going to movies that are as yet un-hyped, that you haven’t seen previews for, and that you haven’t read reviews of. In the months ahead, when friends ask if you’ve heard of that hot new movie that’ll suddenly be all over the media when it goes into commercial release, you can tell them, “Of course I’ve heard of it! I saw it at Cinetopia!”
