Art Lot: David Trubridge Sculpture – The Strands of Life

Weaving has been an essential part of my vocabulary ever since I learnt to weave hats from coconut leaves in the Pacific islands. It is a timeless craft that humans have used for millennia. Recently I was in Cambodia being taught to weave rattan and bamboo by local craftspeople, and this gave me a whole lot more respect for these traditional crafts which are so sorely undervalued. This new artwork for the Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction and the Wildflower Sculpture Exhibition explores that vocabulary in new territory using a much more intransigent material, braided stainless steel wire — several kilometres of it. The weaving takes the form of a tree reaching up and branching out like a nikau or punga, suggesting the interwoven patterns of life. In the Māori world weaving is used as a powerful metaphor for the lines of ancestral descent that both entwine and bifurcate, like an inverted tree. davidtrubridge.com

Bilancia Quarter barrique of Bilancia – Tiratore – 2018 Chardonnay tiratore = shooter (Italian) The fruit for this wine is exclusively from la collina Vineyard where approximately 1.0 hectare of the terraced and incline hill site plus river silt over gravels is planted to Chardonnay. The original plantings () were in 2001 but, commencing in 2008, have been top grafted and replanted to Chardonnay. When we originally planted the vineyard almost every hole we dug (by hand) unearthed a spent bullet, quite old and generally in good condition. Prior to the rifle range on the gravels we imagine the shooters fired their bullets into the hill. Tiratore 2018 is the prequel to a single vineyard 2018 Chardonnay of the same name to be released later next year. Winemakers Warren Gibson and Lorraine Leheny. www.bilancia.co.nz

Askerne 6 magnums and a dozen 750ml bottles of Askerne Reserve Gewürztraminer 2018

2018 was a year that saw tiny crops on the estate blocks that we had designated for Reserve Gewürztraminer. The result is a classic, concentrated, opulent wine for lovers of this variety. The nose displays orange blossom, rose petals and ripe pear, with spice in the background. These characters flow through onto the concentrated palate which also features ripe yellow plum, orange and coriander seed on the finish. The wine is round, textural and mouth-filling with a long lingering finish. The only previous Reserve Gewürztraminer from Askerne was made in 2008. The wine has been bottled as six magnums to allow it to be enjoyed on multiple occasions or on a single special occasion. These will be the only large format bottles that will be offered of this wine. A dozen 750ml bottles are provided so that the auction buyer can follow the development of the wine and perfectly time the enjoyment of the larger bottles. askernewines.co.nz

This unique auction lot from the highly rated 2018 vintage is 100% Malbec from our oldest Gimblett Gravels Malbec vines. Sileni Estates 6 x Double Magnums of Sileni Estates Springstone Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir 2016

From the cool climate ‘Springstone’ vineyard sitting up on the Mangatahi terraces, we bring together a special large format selection celebrating this magnificent vineyard, but also to show the influences different winemaking can have. Single vineyard, single clone 114, but two different winemaking techniques producing two very different wines. The first was fermented on 100% whole bunches, stems and all. For the second the fruit was fully destemmed for fermentation, the more conventional method. Seasoned oak only (no new oak), un-fined and unfiltered, these were filled straight from barrel and only made available for the Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction. Winemakers Cairn Coghill and Grant Edmonds. sileni.co.nz
