1 W E L C O M E T O S A I N T A M B R O S E If this is your first time to visit an Anglican Church, welcome! Our church follows a historic liturgy (meaning the “work of the people”) that involves your participation. Wherever you see bolded text, that is where you take up the work of the people! Our liturgy has two parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Table. With the former we hear, read, sing, and pray God’s Word, with the latter we eat and drink to celebrate this Word made flesh in Jesus Christ. As Anglicans, we stand to sing, kneel to pray, and sit to learn; this reminds us that our bodies matter and that God created us as physical beings for a reason. At various points, you may notice people bowing or making the sign of the cross (gesturing with their hand at their forehead, chest, and shoulders). You'll also notice things like candles, crosses, the smell of incense, and ministers wearing strange garments. All of this has a rich history and symbolism within Christ’s church and is aimed at saying something about God and His Gospel. If you are unfamiliar with liturgical worship (most of us at some point), this all may seem distracting at first, but give it time, it becomes second-nature and is a beautiful means of keeping our worship and knowledge of God from being trapped in our heads as we learn to worship Him with our whole selves. Ultimately, our worship is not about us or what we give to God, but it is about Him and what he gives to us. Welcome to Saint Ambrose!
G U I D E L I N E S R E G A R D I N G C O V I D - 1 9 We follow the CDC guidelines with regards to COVID-19 and work on an honor system. We do not check the vaccination status of anyone and allow folks to enter the building without a mask. However, we ask the unvaccinated and immunocompromised to mask, though like a restaurant, regardless of your vaccination status, you can unmask in your seat. With regards to children and masks, we are leaving this decision up to the wisdom and discretion of each parent. The signs on the pews along with blue tape are no longer in effect for us but we are keeping them up for our host church. C H I L D R E N We love to have children in worship with us. Childcare is also provided downstairs. As you arrive, you will be asked to fill out an information form. All our childcare workers have undergone a thorough background check and adhere to established protocols in order to provide safe and proper care to our children. If you desire to keep your kids in parts of the service and want to take them down at any point, please feel free to excuse yourself.
R E S T R O O M S Restrooms are located downstairs which can be accessed through the stairwell or by the wheelchair accessible elevator located just outside the sanctuary.

We observe a season of Ordinary Time A D V E N T from Pentecost until Advent, which we count as weeks following Pentecost. C H R I S T M A S T I D E Ordinary from its Latin root means “order”. When we order something, we E P I P H A N Y arrange in a sequence. That is, it is numbered. It is ordinal. Ordinary Time is L E N T Ordinal Time. It is counted time and it is a time for growth and maturation, a time in E A S T E R T I D E which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history P E N T E C O S T until all things are finally caught up in Christ. In this way, there is nothing ordinary O R D I N A R Y T I M E about Ordinary Time! r e f l e c t i o n ——————————————————————————— If you are typically modern, your life is like a rich mansion with a terrifying hole right in the middle of the living-room floor. So you paper over the hole with a very busy wallpaper pattern to distract yourself. You find a rhinoceros in the middle of your house. The rhinoceros is wretchedness and death. How in the world can you hide a rhinoceros? Easy: cover it with a million mice. Multiply diversions. — Peter Kreeft
Instead of insisting that human beings attain perfection, [biblical] spirituality begins by facing up to imperfection. We cannot perfect our conduct, try as we might. We cannot understand God through our own intellects. We cannot become one with God. Instead of human beings having to do these things, [biblical] spirituality teaches that God does them for us – He becomes one with us in Jesus Christ; He reveals Himself to our feeble understandings by His Word; He forgives our conduct and, in Christ, lives the perfect life for us. — Gene Veith

T H E F I R S T L E S S O N Ephesians 5:3-14 Reader: A reading from St. Paul’s epistle to the church in Ephesus.
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
7 T H E P S A L M P S A L M 1 4 7 Laudate Dominum Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! * how pleasant it is to honor him with praise! The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; * he gathers the exiles of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted * and binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars * and calls them all by their names. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; * there is no limit to his wisdom. The Lord lifts up the lowly, * but casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; * make music to our God upon the harp. He covers the heavens with clouds * and prepares rain for the earth; He makes grass to grow upon the mountains * and green plants to serve mankind. He provides food for flocks and herds * and for the young ravens when they cry. He is not impressed by the might of a horse; * he has no pleasure in the strength of a man; But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him, * in those who await his gracious favor. Glory to the ✠ Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Celebrant: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. ✠ We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant: Let us humbly confess our sins to Almight God.
We invite you to kneel as you are able. We’ll begin in silence confessing privately, then we’ll confess the following prayer together.
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
T H E C O M F O R T A B L E W O R D S Hear what comfortable words our Savior Christ says to all that truly turn to him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28–30) In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
