Our church follows a historic liturgy (meaning the “work of the people”) that involves your participation. Wherever you see bolded text, that is where you take up the work of the people! Our liturgy has two parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Table. With the former we hear, read, sing, and pray God’s Word, with the latter we eat and drink to celebrate this Word made flesh in Jesus Christ. As Anglicans, we stand to sing, kneel to pray, and sit to learn; this reminds us that our bodies matter and that God created us as physical beings for a reason. At various points, you may notice people bowing or making the sign of the cross (gesturing with their hand at their forehead, chest, and shoulders). You'll also notice things like candles, crosses, the smell of incense, and ministers wearing strange garments. All of this has a rich history and symbolism within Christ’s church and is aimed at saying something about God and His Gospel. If you are unfamiliar with liturgical worship (most of us at some point), this all may seem distracting at first, but give it time, it becomes second-nature and is a beautiful means of keeping our worship and knowledge of God from being trapped in our heads as we learn to worship Him with our whole selves. Ultimately, our worship is not about us or what we give to God, but it is about Him and what he gives to us. Welcome to Saint Ambrose! G U I D E L I N E S R E G A R D I N G C O V I D - 1 9 We follow the CDC guidelines with regards to COVID-19 and work on an honor system. We do not check the vaccination status of anyone and allow folks to enter the building without a mask. However, we ask the unvaccinated and immunocompromised to mask, though like a restaurant, regardless of your vaccination status, you can unmask in your seat. With regards to children and masks, we are leaving this decision up to the wisdom and discretion of each parent. The signs on the pews along with blue tape are no longer in effect for us but we are keeping them up for our host church. C H I L D R E N We love to have children in worship with us. Childcare is also provided downstairs. As you arrive, you will be asked to fill out an information form. All our childcare workers have undergone a thorough background check and adhere to established protocols in order to provide safe and proper care to our children. If you desire to keep your kids in parts of the service and want to take them down at any point, please feel free to excuse yourself. R E S T R O O M S Restrooms are located downstairs which can be accessed through the stairwell or by the wheelchair accessible elevator located just outside the sanctuary. R E C T O R ’ S I N F O R M A T I O N Casey Bedell serves as church-planter and rector. He is married to Jennifer and they have two boys, Woods and Jack. They previously ministered in Portland, OR, Washington, DC, and Issaquah, WA but now could not be more thrilled to be serving Christ’s body in Seattle. Casey would love to connect with you: [email protected]. 2 C H U R C H C A L E N D A R We observe a season of Ordinary Time A D V E N T from Pentecost until Advent, which we count as weeks following Pentecost. C H R I S T M A S T I D E Ordinary from its Latin root means “order”. When we order something, we E P I P H A N Y arrange in a sequence. That is, it is numbered. It is ordinal. Ordinary Time is L E N T Ordinal Time. It is counted time and it is a time for growth and maturation, a time in E A S T E R T I D E which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history P E N T E C O S T until all things are finally caught up in Christ. In this way, there is nothing ordinary O R D I N A R Y T I M E about Ordinary Time! r e f l e c t i o n ——————————————————————————— If you are typically modern, your life is like a rich mansion with a terrifying hole right in the middle of the living-room floor. So you paper over the hole with a very busy wallpaper pattern to distract yourself. You find a rhinoceros in the middle of your house. The rhinoceros is wretchedness and death. How in the world can you hide a rhinoceros? Easy: cover it with a million mice. Multiply diversions. — Peter Kreeft Instead of insisting that human beings attain perfection, [biblical] spirituality begins by facing up to imperfection. We cannot perfect our conduct, try as we might. We cannot understand God through our own intellects. We cannot become one with God. Instead of human beings having to do these things, [biblical] spirituality teaches that God does them for us – He becomes one with us in Jesus Christ; He reveals Himself to our feeble understandings by His Word; He forgives our conduct and, in Christ, lives the perfect life for us. — Gene Veith 3 P R O C E S S AllI O N Your A L H YWorks M N Are Good A L L Y O U R W O R K S A R E G O O D Sandra McCracken Jill Phillips Text & Music:Verse Sandra McCracken Julie Lee G G D # j j & 128 j . œ œ j Œ j œ œ.
