Our church follows a historic liturgy (meaning the “work of the people”) that involves your participation. Wherever you see bolded text, that is where you take up the work of the people! Our liturgy has two parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Table. With the former we hear, read, sing, and pray God’s Word, with the latter we eat and drink to celebrate this Word made flesh in Jesus Christ. As Anglicans, we stand to sing, kneel to pray, and sit to learn; this reminds us that our bodies matter and that God created us as physical beings for a reason. At various points, you may notice people bowing or making the sign of the cross (gesturing with their hand at their forehead, chest, and shoulders). You'll also notice things like candles, crosses, the smell of incense, and ministers wearing strange garments. All of this has a rich history and symbolism within Christ’s church and is aimed at saying something about God and His Gospel. If you are unfamiliar with liturgical worship (most of us at some point), this all may seem distracting at first, but give it time, it becomes second-nature and is a beautiful means of keeping our worship and knowledge of God from being trapped in our heads as we learn to worship Him with our whole selves. Ultimately, our worship is not about us or what we give to God, but it is about Him and what he gives to us. Welcome to Saint Ambrose! G U I D E L I N E S R E G A R D I N G C O V I D - 1 9 We follow the CDC guidelines with regards to COVID-19 and work on an honor system. We do not check the vaccination status of anyone and allow folks to enter the building without a mask. However, we ask the unvaccinated and immunocompromised to mask, though like a restaurant, regardless of your vaccination status, you can unmask in your seat. With regards to children and masks, we are leaving this decision up to the wisdom and discretion of each parent. The signs on the pews along with blue tape are no longer in effect for us but we are keeping them up for our host church. C H I L D R E N We love to have children in worship with us. Childcare is also provided downstairs. As you arrive, you will be asked to fill out an information form. All our childcare workers have undergone a thorough background check and adhere to established protocols in order to provide safe and proper care to our children. If you desire to keep your kids in parts of the service and want to take them down at any point, please feel free to excuse yourself. R E S T R O O M S Restrooms are located downstairs which can be accessed through the stairwell or by the wheelchair accessible elevator located just outside the sanctuary. R E C T O R ’ S I N F O R M A T I O N Casey Bedell serves as church-planter and rector. He is married to Jennifer and they have two boys, Woods and Jack. They previously ministered in Portland, OR, Washington, DC, and Issaquah, WA but now could not be more thrilled to be serving Christ’s body in Seattle. Casey would love to connect with you: [email protected]. 2 C H U R C H C A L E N D A R We observe a season of Ordinary Time A D V E N T from Pentecost until Advent, which we count as weeks following Pentecost. C H R I S T M A S T I D E Ordinary from its Latin root means “order”. When we order something, we E P I P H A N Y arrange in a sequence. That is, it is numbered. It is ordinal. Ordinary Time is L E N T Ordinal Time. It is counted time and it is a time for growth and maturation, a time in E A S T E R T I D E which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history P E N T E C O S T until all things are finally caught up in Christ. In this way, there is nothing ordinary O R D I N A R Y T I M E about Ordinary Time! r e f l e c t i o n ——————————————————————————— May a merciful God preserve me from a Christian Church in which everyone is ‘good.’ I want to be in a church of the faint-hearted, the failed, the feeble and the ailing…who believe in the forgiveness of sins. — Martin Luther Breaking your neck, getting mauled by a grizzly, losing your entire family in an accident you caused—our research shows they all pale in comparison to the agony of your personal desires, motivations being perceived. Interestingly enough, we found that the only worse possible human experience is seeing yourself for the miserable, weak little creature you truly are. — The Onion Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. I have walked myself into the best thoughts. — Søren Kierkegaard 3 W E L C O M E & G R E E T I N G Well, good afternoon everyone, friends and family, welcome to worship here at St. Ambrose, and I want to invite you stand and turn and face the entrance of the sanctuary and let us begin worshipping God with our opening hymn: Jesus with Thy Church Abide. 4 Jesus, With Thy Church Abide P R O C E S S I O N A L H Y M N Words by Thomas Pollock Music by Christopher Miner RealJ Key E S U S , W I T H T H Y C H U R C H A B I D E Text: Thomas Pollock; Music: Christopher Miner Cm Ab Eb Bb b 4 . & b b 4 . ‰ œ œœœ ˙ 1.Jeœ -œ sus,œ withœ Thy œ church a-bide; 2.Keep her life and doct - rine pure; 3.May she one in doct - rine be, 4.May she guide the poor and blind, 3 Cm Ab Eb Bb b & b b ‰ œ œ œ œ ˙ Beœ œ herœ savœ - ior, œ Lord, and Guide, Grant her pa - tience to en - dure, One in truth and char - i-ty, Seek the lost un - til she find 5 Ab Eb Cm Bb Ab Abmaj7 b 2 4 & b b ‰ œ œ œ œ œ œ 4 œ œ œ 4 Ó While on earth her faith is œ tried:˙ Trust - ing in Thy prom - ise sure: Win - ning all to faith in Thee: And the bro - ken - heart - ed bind: 8 Bb Ab Abmaj7 b j & b b œ Ó Weœ. be - seechœ œ Thee,œ hearœ us,œ We be - seech Thee, hear us, We be - seech Thee, hear us, We be - seech Thee, hear us, 10 Bb Cm Ab Eb Bb b j & b b œ Ó Ó Ó Weœ. be - seechœ œ Thee,œ hearœ us,œ We be - seech Thee, hear us. The Celebrant (leader) reads the light print, the People read the bold. T H E O P E N I N G A C C L A M A T I O N Celebrant: Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord People: At the presence of the God of Jacob. Celebrant: Blessed be God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. T H E O P E N I N G C O L L E C T Celebrant : Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. T H E S U M M A R Y O F T H E L A W Celebrant: Let us remember the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: People: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
