While the initial academic, student service and operational mechanisms required to integrate the Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic learning communities have already been implemented by its passionate and experienced Interim Head of School, additional challenges remain that will require the immediate focused attention and expertise of the permanent Head of School upon his or her arrival. Thompson was originally hired to coach the Sound Tigers on June 28, 2011 and led the team to a division title in 2011-12 before being named assistant South Division coach of the Islanders for two seasons (2012-14). Thompson also served as a player/coach with the CHL’s Colorado Eagles in 2003-04 and was an assistant with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen from 2005-09. Before joining the coaching ranks, Thompson enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career from 1991-2005, which included 121 NHL games and more than 900 professional contests.     SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS: COACHES BIOS GEORDIE KINNEAR - HEAD COACH Geordie Kinnear joins the Springfield Thunderbirds as head coach after serving as an AHL assistant coach since 2001. Kinnear began his coaching career with the Albany River Rats following an eight South Division -year professional playing career and also served as a special assignment scout for the New Jersey Devils during the 2004-05 season. After he played three seasons of junior hockey for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, the New Jersey Devils drafted Kinnear in the seventh round (162nd overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Beginning with the 1993-94 season, he skated with Albany for the first six years of his career, helping the team reach the playoffs each season. Over that time, he was a member of Albany’s 1995 Calder Cup championship team, appeared in four consecutive AHL All-Star Classics (1995-1999) and served as team captain for three seasons (1996-1999). Kinnear signed with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent in August of 1999, making his National Hockey League debut by appearing in four games with Atlanta, posting a total of 13 penalty minutes. He split the 1999-2000 season between Atlanta and the Thrashers’ IHL affiliate, the Orlando Solar Bears. After starting the 2000-01 season with Orlando, he was traded back to New Jersey on Nov. 6, 2000, and played 14 games with Albany before being forced to retire due to injury in December of 2000. A defenseman originally from Simcoe, Ontario, Kinnear totaled 30 goals, 68 assists and 1,094 penalty minutes over the course of 406 career AHL games with Albany.

    Vol. 14 No. 1 SUMMER 2020 Graduation goes virtual Online ceremonies Food replace large gatherings By Azell Cavaan for Coronavirus may have robbed the Springfield Public Schools Class of 2020 of the traditional Symphony Hall commencement ceremony, but seniors had still had opportunities to celebrate. “Clearly, we know that gathering thousands of people at Symphony Hall or any other venue is not a responsible thing to do with regard to public thought health and safety, so we opted to provide our seniors with the very best virtual commencement ceremony that we could create,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick. “We wanted them to experience a sense of celebration, closure, achievement and be inspired to succeed in their next stage of life.” The school district paired with its long-standing partner Focus Springfield, the City’s community media center, to produce the virtual ceremonies, which all included a tribute to seniors by U.S. Congressman Richard E. Neal, along with the traditional lineup of speakers. Springfield native and NFL player Christian Wilkins also provided a special message for the graduates of the Springfield Alternative schools, which includes: Springfield Public Day High School, Liberty Preparatory Academy, High School Completion Program, Gateway to College at Springfield Technical Community College, Gateway to College at Holyoke Community College, and Springfield High School. Alternative Schools Principal Rhonda Jacobs said the atypical graduation circumstances created a space for reflection and creativity. With hockey fans and local dignitaries looking on from center ice seats at the MassMutual Center Arena, team officials announced the new name through a pulsating two-minute video on the arena’s state of the art LED scoreboard. “The Springfield Thunderbirds’ name represents the strength and pride of western Massachusetts. It is a nod to our hockey past, a tribute to the men and woman of the Air Force who are so vital to this region, and a symbol of the new energy and spirit that is palpable in Springfield,” said Nathan Costa, the Thunderbirds Executive Vice-President. Thunderbirds is an allusion to two previous Springfield AHL hockey team names, the Indians and the Falcons. The name refers to the animal of Native American legend that creates thunder and lightning by flapping its massive wings. Like the Falcon, it is also a fierce bird of prey. The name also refers to the famous demonstration planes of the U.S. Air Force and serves as an homage to Barnes Air National Guard Base and the Westover Air Reserve Base, in Westfield and Chicopee respectively. The announcement follows a “name the team” campaign that solicited suggestions from the public in a survey coordinated in partnership with MassLive and the Springfield Republican.
