Springfield Thunderbirds Announced As Team Name for New AHL Springfield Thunderbirds Announced as Team Name for New AHL Franchise Team officials, local dignitaries and Springfield hockey fans on hand to celebrate new name at MassMutual Center Wednesday, 06.15.2016 SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — Springfield’s new American Hockey League franchise will take the ice for the upcoming 2016-2017 season as the Springfield Thunderbirds. With hockey fans and local dignitaries looking on from center ice seats at the MassMutual Center Arena, team officials announced the new name through a pulsating two-minute video on the arena’s state of the art LED scoreboard. “The Springfield Thunderbirds’ name represents the strength and pride of western Massachusetts. It is a nod to our hockey past, a tribute to the men and woman of the Air Force who are so vital to this region, and a symbol of the new energy and spirit that is palpable in Springfield,” said Nathan Costa, the Thunderbirds Executive Vice-President. Thunderbirds is an allusion to two previous Springfield AHL hockey team names, the Indians and the Falcons. The name refers to the animal of Native American legend that creates thunder and lightning by flapping its massive wings. Like the Falcon, it is also a fierce bird of prey. The name also refers to the famous demonstration planes of the U.S. Air Force and serves as an homage to Barnes Air National Guard Base and the Westover Air Reserve Base, in Westfield and Chicopee respectively. The announcement follows a “name the team” campaign that solicited suggestions from the public in a survey coordinated in partnership with MassLive and the Springfield Republican. The survey received over 2,600 responses. “We would like to thank the thousands of fans who participated in this survey. We were overwhelmed by the creativity and enthusiasm of those who submitted suggestions. Our fans wanted a name that honored the proud history of AHL hockey in Springfield while at the same time reflecting the new energy and excitement of this franchise. We believe the Thunderbirds captures this spirit, ” commented Costa. The logo features a bird’s head in bright blue with a curved beak against a background of red and yellow. The team’s name is picked out in yellow and white. "The City of Springfield has a long and storied relationship with the American Hockey League going back to the days of Eddie Shore. For 80 years, professional hockey has been played in our community, and many fans could not imagine a season without a local franchise playing home games at the Mass Mutual Center. Next season, the ‘Springfield Thunderbirds’ will take the ice in pursuit of their first Calder Cup. And we have the ownership group to thank for the efforts to keep a charter member of the AHL in downtown Springfield. I am certain that local fans will welcome this exciting new team to The Nest, and that the 2016-2017 season will be a successful partnership between the Thunderbirds and the Florida Panthers of the NHL," said Congressman Richard E. Neal. The name was announced today at an event at the MassMutual Center Arena attended by team owners and executives, local hockey fans, local dignitaries, AHL officials, and representatives of the team’s National Hockey League affiliate, the Florida Panthers. The Springfield Thunderbirds will operate as the AHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers. In coordination with the team name announcement, the franchise also launched its new website, www.SpringfieldThunderbirds.com and social media accounts. Fans can now log onto the website and place a deposit for season ticket memberships. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, "Again, so thankful, but not surprised that these outstanding corporate citizens continue to 'step up' for our City of Springfield. Their continued belief and investment in our Springfield is deeply appreciated. Now we need to 'pack the house' to help assure that professional hockey is here to stay for many years to come - 'drop the puck!'" The team will play its home games at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. “The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority is proud and excited to host the Springfield Thunderbirds’ home games at the MassMutual Center,” said MCCA Deputy Director Fred Peterson. “The MMC is one of the AHL’s premier venues and we look forward to working with the team and all of our partners in western Massachusetts next season and for many years to come.” “We are excited to have our AHL players take the ice next season with the Springfield Thunderbirds name and logo on their jerseys. This is the start of a new era for AHL hockey in western Massachusetts and we look forward to being a part of it,” Florida Panthers Executive Chairman Peter Luukko said. Founded in 1936 and now with franchises in 30 cities across North America, the American Hockey League serves as the top development league for the players, coaches, managers, executives and broadcasters of all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 88-percent of today’s NHL players are AHL graduates, and for the 15th year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games in 2015-16..

    BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS: COACHES BIOS BRENT THOMPSON - HEAD COACH Brent Thompson is in his seventh season as head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, which also marks his ninth year in the New York Islanders organization. Thompson was originally hired to coach the Sound Tigers on June 28, 2011 and led the team to a division title in 2011-12 before being named assistant South Division coach of the Islanders for two seasons (2012-14). On May 2, 2014, the Islanders announced Thompson would return to his role as head coach of the Sound Tigers. He is 246-203-50 in 499 career regular-season games as Bridgeport's head coach. Thompson became the Sound Tigers' all-time winningest head coach on Jan. 28, 2017, passing Jack Capuano with his 134th career victory. Prior to his time in Bridgeport, Thompson served as head coach of the Alaska Aces (ECHL) for two years (2009-11), winning the Kelly Cup Championship in 2011. During his two seasons as head coach in Alaska, Thompson amassed a record of 83- 50-11 and won the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the team to a record of 47-22-3. Thompson also served as a player/coach with the CHL’s Colorado Eagles in 2003-04 and was an assistant with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen from 2005-09. Before joining the coaching ranks, Thompson enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career from 1991-2005, which included 121 NHL games and more than 900 professional contests. The Calgary, AB native was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round (39th overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

FROM STAFF REPORTS May 23, 2016 Twenty­three seasons of Portland Pirates hockey officially came to an end on Monday. The American Hockey League’s Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the minor­league team to a group of local investors in Springfield, Massachusetts. The governors also approved the move of the franchise to Springfield, where it will begin play at the MassMutual Center this fall. The AHL team’s nickname will be announced in coming weeks. “This is a great day for our organization, for the city of Springfield and for the entire region,” said Frank Fitzgerald, attorney for the new owners, Springfield Hockey, LLC. The NHL’s Florida Panthers, who were partnered with the Pirates during the 2015­16 season, have signed a multiyear affiliation agreement with Springfield Hockey, LLC. The Panthers announced that Eric Joyce will remain their AHL general manager. Joyce was GM of the Pirates last season. “I think it’s actually a blessing in disguise,” said George Nanos of Portland, who has been a fan of AHL hockey since attending his first Maine Mariners game in 1977, when he was 14. “The American Hockey League is indifferent to us and they kind of let it slide.” The Pirates announced on May 4 that majority owner Ron Cain had struck a deal to sell the franchise to a group planning to move the team out of Portland. The news stunned city officials and left Cumberland County without a major tenant at Cross Insurance Arena.

    League Equivalencies – Gabriel Desjardins League Equivalencies ’a goal in one league worth in another? NHL teams draft and sign players from numerous major junior leagues, US and Canadian colleges, European Elite Leagues and various North American minor leagues. In evaluating players, it is critical to know how a ’performance will translate to the NHL. Other things being equal, the quality of one league relative to another is reflected in how many points a player would score in each league. Research has shown that while NHL pla’playing time and point scoring peaks between ages 23 and 26, their point-per-game (PPG) production reaches 90% of its peak value much earlier, and holds its value beyond age 30. It is rare that a player plays significant time in two leagues in the same year, but players often play in one league in one year and another the next. With a large number of such players, we can then estimate the quality of each league using the ratio of the ’PPG in each year. What we are most interested in is what one point in a given league is equivalent to in the NHL – in other words, the league equivalency. There is enough data to use the above method to estimate the league equivalence for the best minor leagues (AHL/IHL), most major professional leagues (European Elite Leagues) and the WHA. Minor Leagues With the demise of the International Hockey League, the AHL is now the top minor professional league in North America. But how good is it? Obviously, there are no serious games between NHL teams and their AHL affiliates.
