TONIGHT’S GAME: The San Diego Gulls open the 2021 AHL Playoffs with Game 1 of the First Round vs. the Bakersfield Condors at Mechanics Bank Arena (6 p.m., TV: AHLTV; Radio: iHeartRadio), May 21. The Gulls clinched a berth in the AHL Playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons, following three previous postseason appearances in the postseason in 2016, 2017 and 2019. The Gulls posted a 26-17-1-0 record (.602) in the regular season, and enter the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the Pacific Division and fourth in the Western Conference. San Diego owns an all-time record of 210-131-22-10, including 111-60-10-5 at home and 99-72-12-5 on the road. San Diego leads the Pacific Division in all-time wins, points (453) and points percentage (.607%, min. two seasons) since the division’s inception six seasons ago. Following the game, tonight’s opener, the series will continue Sunday, May 23 at Mechanics Bank Arena (7 p.m., TV: CW San Diego).

POSTSEASON HISTORY: The 2021 postseason marks San Diego’s fourth appearance in the AHL Postseason, and the fourth time in the last five postseasons (from 2016-17). The Gulls have earned a 9-4 record in the First Round, advancing to the Second Round on all three occasions. San Diego is the only Pacific Division team to reach the Second Round on three occasions. San Diego has compiled an all-time playoff record of 17-18 with an 8-10 on home ice all-time in the postseason with a road record of 9-8. The club has appeared in seven previous playoff series, going 4-3 in those series.

GULLS-CONDORS: San Diego and Bakersfield are meeting for the second time in the Playoffs. In 2020-21 San Diego won five of the eight meetings between the clubs, including the first four (5-3-0-0) of the season and all four contests on home ice, also claiming the season series for the fourth time in the past five seasons. The Gulls own a 30-20-1- 2 mark all-time against Bakersfield, with a 16-9-0-1 record at home and 14-11-1-1. Chase De Leo led active San Diego skaters in scoring vs. Bakersfield this season, posting 4-3=7 points, including two game-winning goals, and a +7 rating in six games played. San Diego also defeated Bakersfield in the only postseason series between the clubs, eliminating the Condors in six games (4-2) in the Pacific Division Finals of the . Three of the six games reached , including the fifth-longest game in AHL History where ended Game 1 at 4:20 of the fourth OT, the fifth-longest game in AHL history (124:20).

HIGH OCTANE OFFENSE: San Diego enjoyed offensive success this season, leading the AHL in total goals scored (153) and total power-play goals (35). By period, the Gulls co-led in the AHL in first period goals (45), ranked second in second period goals (49) and led in third period goals (51). San Diego scored 20 goals over the span of three games, Mar. 31 (7-2), Apr. 3 (7-3) and Apr. 4 (6-4), marking the first time in team history that the Gulls scored 6+ goals in three consecutive games.

SPECIAL, SPECIAL TEAMS: San Diego ranks second in the AHL on the kill (154-for-181. 85.1%,) and eighth on the power play (35-for-173, 20.2%). The Gulls are one of just three AHL clubs to rank in the top ten on both special teams units (also Bellville, Colorado). San Diego has scored multiple power-play goals in a game ten times this season, the in the AHL. The Gulls have also killed 21 of their opponents last 22 power play opportunities (95.4%).

STREAKING: The Gulls held multiple winning streaks over the 2020-21 season. San Diego owned a seven-game win streak from Mar. 21 to Apr. 4 (7-0-0-0), marking a season high and was one game shy of matching the club’s record of eight games (set three times: Dec. 27, 2018-Jan. 12, 2019, Jan. 26-Feb. 17, 2018 and Nov. 11-Dec. 2, 2016). The Gulls’ winning ways started at the beginning of the season when they matched a club record with seven consecutive home wins (7-0-0-0), which is tied for the second longest among AHL teams this season.

POWERED BY POTS: Gulls right wing Andrew Poturalski recorded his 200th career AHL point with an assist on Sam Carrick’s , Mar. 21 at TUC. Poturalski leads the AHL in scoring (9-31=40) and assists and ranks tied for fourth in power-play assists (11). Signed by Anaheim to a one-year contract extension on Oct. 10, 2020, Poturalski has posted two career-tying three-assist performances (1-3=4, Feb. 20 vs. COL; 0-3=3, Mar. 3 @ ONT) and has multi-point efforts in eight of his last 19 games (5-15=20), ranking tied for second in the AHL in multi-point games (10). With two assists (0- 2=2) on May 8, Poturalski became the first AHL player to reach 40 points this season.

CAPTAIN CARRICK: Gulls Sam Carrick has reached three prominent milestones early in the 2020-21 season. With an assist on Maxim Golod’s game-winning goal on Mar. 24 @ ONT, Carrick recorded his 300th career AHL point (132-168=300). With his goal vs. Colorado on Feb. 13, Carrick became the club’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Tropp (64-93=157). On Apr. 21, Carrick appeared in his 216th game with San Diego, tying former Gulls captain for the lead on the Gulls all-time games played list. Carrick owns 85-95=180 points in 216 career games with San Diego. Carrick was recalled by the on Apr. 4 and earned five points (2-4=6) and a +4 rating in 12 appearances with the NHL club this season.

YOUNG BACKSTOPS: First-year netminders Lukas Dostal and Olle Eriksson Ek have found their way atop the rookie goaltending leaderboards. Dostal, who owned a career-high and rookie club record eight-game win streak (8-0-0-0) from Mar. 31-Apr. 30, ranks second among AHL goaltenders in saves (745), second in wins (15) and fourth in SV% (.916). Eriksson Ek ranks tied for fourth among rookie goaltenders in wins (8) and sixth in GAA (3.14) and SV% (.901). The tandem became the two youngest goaltenders in Gulls history to post a win with the club, Dostal is the youngest (20 years, 233 days) with a win on Feb. 5 vs. Bakersfield and Eriksson Ek the second-youngest after his win on Mar. 6 vs. San Jose.

MR. 300: With San Diego’s win over Colorado on Feb. 13, Gulls Head Coach Kevin Dineen became the 22nd head coach in AHL history to reach 300 career wins. In 553 AHL games as a head coach, Dineen has a 305-183-33-35 record with San Diego (2019-present) and Portland (2005-11). Dineen leads Anaheim’s primary affiliate head coaches in wins (191), points (420) and point percentage (.616). Dineen has led San Diego to a 56-36-7-2 record in 101 games as head coach.

IRONMEN: Two Gulls skaters, Andrew Poturalski and Keegan Lowe, appeared in all 44 regular season games this season, co-leading the in games played. Poturalski, who won the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the AHL’s top point-getter, led San Diego in scoring, assists and power-play assists and ranked second in shots (102) and power-play points (1-13=14). Lowe, who signed a one-year contract with San Diego in January, led Gulls defensemen in game-winning goals (2) and shorthanded points (0-1=1) and ranked second in penalty minutes (33).

ROOKIES REWARDED: Two months into the season, two Gulls rookies have been selected for league-wide awards. On. Feb. 8, Trevor Zegras was named CCM/AHL Player of the Week after earning 2-3=5 points in his first two career AHL games. On Mar. 1, Gulls defenseman Jamie Drysdale was named CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for February. Drysdale posted 4-5=9 points in his first 10 career AHL games, pacing league blueliners in goals and ranking second in scoring for the month. Selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round (sixth overall), Drysdale earned a goal and an assist in his second professional game on Feb. 6, becoming the youngest player in Gulls history to score a goal (18 years, 9 months, 28 days). WORKING OVERTIME: In the Gulls last AHL postseason appearance, three of the first five games of the Pacific Division Finals against Bakersfield reached overtime, including the fifth-longest game in AHL History (Game 1, 124:20). The series amassed 457:55 over a span of 25 periods, including a total of 97:55 of overtime in the series (seven OT periods). The Calder Cup Playoffs record for total game time in a series is 513:36 between Albany and Philadelphia (2008) with the overtime mark set by Rochester and New Haven in 1982 (113:49).

OVERTIME HISTORY: On May 3 at Rabobank Arena, San Diego won Game 1 of the Pacific Division Final over the Bakersfield Condors in the fourth overtime to mark the fifth-longest game in AHL history (124:20). Max Comtois scored the game-winning goal 64:20 into OT. The game marked the longest overtime game in Gulls history and was the longest recorded by Pacific Division clubs in AHL history. The four games in AHL history longer than Game 1 include Rochester at New Haven (74:08) on Apr. 10, 1982, Houston at Hamilton (74:56) on May 30, 2003, Philadelphia at Albany (82:58) on Apr. 24, 2008 and Lehigh Valley at Charlotte (86:48) on May 9, 2018. Comtois became the youngest Gull to score an OT goal at 20 years, three months.

PACIFIC DIVISON POSTSEASON FORMAT

On Feb. 5, 2021, the San Diego Gulls and the American Hockey League (AHL) began the 2020-21 season. However, the season has been an untraditional and unique one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three AHL clubs, the , and , opted out of the season, while several others temporarily relocated operations and were realigned into different divisions, including the Pacific Division’s .

Additionally, several AHL clubs were granted provisional relocations for the 2020-21 season, including San Diego. The Gulls moved to FivePoint Arena at Great Park Ice in Irvine, to ensure all players within the Anaheim Ducks organization were in one location under the same health protocols. The Gulls remain committed to San Diego long-term and will return to Pechanga Arena San Diego for the 2021-22 season.

On Apr. 29, 2021, as the 2020-21 AHL season was coming to a close, AHL President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Howson announced the league would not be able to conduct traditional Calder Cup Playoffs in 2021. However, each of the league’s five divisions were provided the opportunity to independently determine its own postseason format.

While four of the league’s five divisions decided to not host a postseason, the members of the Pacific Division elected to complete the 2020-21 season with a playoff tournament to determine a division champion. The tournament winner will be awarded the John D. Chick Trophy as champions of the Pacific Division. The Chick Trophy has been presented to an AHL division champion annually since 1961-62.

On May 17, 2021, the AHL announced the format and schedule of the 2021 Pacific Division Playoffs, with all seven teams participating. The fourth- through seventh-place clubs in the regular-season standings, determined by points percentage, played in a single-elimination play-in tournament, held at the Gulls temporary home at FivePoint Arena.

The won the play-in tournament, defeating the 2-1 on May 18 and then besting the 5-1 on May 19 to join the top three teams in the best-of-three semifinals. The San Jose Barracuda will face the in the Pacific Division Semifinals.

Kevin Dineen enters his second season as head coach of the San Diego Gulls, his fifth overall in the Anaheim Ducks organization. Named to his current post July 15, 2019, Dineen guided the Gulls to a 30-19-6-2 record in his first season with San Diego. A native of Quebec City, Quebec, Dineen was an assistant coach for the from 2014- 18, helping the club to a championship in 2015. He also previously served as head coach of the from 2011-13, guiding the club to a 56-62-28 record, including its first Southeast Division title in 2011-12.

Dineen spent six seasons as head coach of the (AHL) from 2005-11, leading his teams to a 266-155-59 record in 480 games. In three seasons as Anaheim’s AHL affiliate, Dineen’s teams went 135-76-29 (.623%) with two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals (2005, 2008). He was named the recipient of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding coach in 2005-06. Dineen leads Anaheim’s primary affiliate head coaches in all-time wins (169), points (375) and point percentage (.623%)

Internationally, Dineen led the Canadian women’s national team to a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, . He also led 's men's national team to a bronze medal at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship and a second-place finish at the 2018 in , .

Selected by the in the third round (56th overall) of the 1982 NHL Draft, Dineen played 19 NHL seasons from 1984-2003, recording 355-405=760 points and 2,229 penalty minutes (PIM) in 1,188 career games with Hartford, Philadelphia, Carolina, and Columbus. He is one of eight NHL players to record more than 300 goals and 2,000 PIM. Dineen also appeared in 59 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with Hartford, Philadelphia and Carolina, collecting 23-18=41 points. He also served as team captain while playing for Philadelphia, Hartford and Carolina.

As a player, Dineen appeared in two NHL All-Star Games (1988, 1989), and was named the NHL’s Man of the Year in 1990-91 in recognition of his involvement with charitable activities. He was also named a finalist for the Bill Masterton Trophy on three occasions, awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to .

Dineen represented Canada in numerous international tournaments as a player, including the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He also helped lead Team Canada to the 1987 and appeared in three World Championships for Team Canada, winning silver on two occasions (1985 and 1989).

ASSISTANT COACH: Sylvain Lefebvre

The 2020-21 AHL campaign marks Sylvain Lefebvre’s third season as an assistant coach with the Gulls. In his first two campaigns with the club, Lefebvre helped guide San Diego to a 66-43-11-5 record and an appearance in the 2019 Calder Cup Western Conference Finals.

Lefebvre spent the previous six seasons as Head Coach of Montreal’s primary AHL affiliate in Hamilton (2012-15), St. John’s (2015-17) and Laval (2017-18). Prior to his AHL assignment with Montreal, he served as Assistant Coach with Colorado (NHL) for three seasons (2009-12) after spending two years (2007-09) as Assistant Coach with the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate in Lake Erie.

Lefebvre is a veteran of 945 career NHL games with Montreal, Toronto, Quebec/Colorado and the . He recorded 30-154=184 points with a +108 rating during his 14-year NHL career. Lefebvre was part of Colorado’s first Stanley Cup championship team in 1996 and went on to appear in 129 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. Lefebvre also played parts of four AHL seasons with Sherbrooke (1986-89) and Hartford (2001-02), earning 18-61=79 points in 171 career regular- season games.

ASSISTANT COACH: David Urquhart

David Urquhart is in the midst of his third season as an assistant coach for the Gulls. Urquhart helped San Diego to its third Calder Cup Playoff appearance in franchise history and first trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2018-19.

Prior to joining the Anaheim organization, Urquhart served as Assistant Coach with McGill University in Montreal for four seasons from 2014-18. He also served as Head Coach for Team Serbia at the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championship Division II. Urquhart appeared in 130 career AHL games from 2008-11, collecting 6-17=23 points with a +8 rating with Hartford and Hamilton. Urquhart also played three seasons in Italy from 2011-14, highlighted by a league championship victory in 2013-14.

A native of Thorold, Ontario, Urquhart played four collegiate seasons with the McGill Redmen from 2004-08 and earned a commerce degree in 2008. Named to the 2006-07 All-Canadian Second Team, Urquhart recorded 23-84=107 points in 147 career games and led McGill to the Ontario University Athletics conference championship as captain in 2007-08. The three- time All-Star concluded his time at McGill as the eighth-highest scoring defenseman in Redmen history. In his first season (2018-19) behind the bench in Bakersfield, Woodcroft led the team to its first-ever AHL Pacific Division title, regular season Western Conference title, AHL Calder Cup Playoffs berth, and Calder Cup Playoffs series victory. The team’s 42 wins were the most-ever for the Condors organization. During the season, the team won 17 consecutive games, all in regulation or overtime, tied for the second longest streak in AHL history. Under his tutelage, five Condors made their NHL debuts with Edmonton in 2018-19 along with Tyler Benson (All-Rookie, Second All-Star) and Shane Starrett (All-Rookie, Second All-Star) receiving league accolades following the season. Prior to joining the Condors, Woodcroft served as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers for three seasons and the San Jose Sharks for seven seasons. He also spent three seasons as a member of the coaching staff (2005-08), including their 2008 Stanley Cup Championship Internationally, Woodcroft won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2015 Men’s World Hockey Championship as an assistant coach. He was also an assistant coach for the under-23 Team North America at the 2016 . HOULE - ASST. COACH BORN: JAN. 14, 1975 - CHARLESBOURG, QUEBEC Houle joined the Condors (AHL) as an assistant coach in 2015-16. In 2018-19, he helped develop a Condors offense which led the AHL in goals per game at 3.56 and the 7th-best power play at 20.5%. Offensively, both Tyler Benson (2nd) and Cooper Marody (3rd) finished among rookie leaders in scoring. He began his professional coaching experience with the Condors as a head coach during their final year in the ECHL in 2014-15. Prior to coming to Bakersfield, he compiled four consecutive 40-win seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with Lewiston and Blainville-Boisbriand. From 2003-2010, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Clarkson (NY) University. Before his coaching career, the native of Charlesbourg, Quebec was drafted in the 4th round (#99) of the 1993 NHL Draft by the . He played nearly 300 games professional in the AHL and ECHL from 1997-2002. He played four seasons at Clarkson from 1993-97. DAVE MANSON - ASST. COACH BORN: JAN. 27, 1967 - PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN Dave Manson was announced as an assistant coach with the Condors on June 4, 2018. In his first season with the Condors, he helped develop the career of , who played 17 games in Edmonton, including making his NHL debut. The Condors were also one of the top teams defensively in the AHL, ranking fourth in goals against per game at 2.68. Manson worked with the of the (WHL) from 2011-18 as both an assistant and associate coach. During his most recent time with the Raiders he helped develop first-round NHL selections C (#3, EDM, 2014), D Josh Morrissey (#13, WPG, 2013), and C Mark McNeill (#18, CHI, 2011). In his first stint in Prince Albert, he helped develop first-round selection C Kyle Chipchura (#18, MTL, 2004). As a player, the Prince Albert, Saskatchewan native played 1,103 NHL games for Chicago, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Phoenix, Montreal, Dallas, and Toronto. The d-man notched 390 points (102g-288a) and 2,792 penalty minutes over his 16-year NHL career.

His penalty minutes total is 13th most all-time in NHL history. He was drafted in the 1st round, 11th overall of the 1985 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. His son Josh has plays for the Anaheim Ducks. SYLVAIN RODRIDGUE - GOALTENDING COACH BORN: JUNE 27, 1973 - MONTREAL, QUEBEC Sylvain Rodrigue began working on a full-time basis with Condors goaltenders in 2018-19, but has been with the Oilers organization for the past six seasons. He helped develop rookie goaltender Shane Starrett, who was named AHL Goaltender of the Month in February and received All-Rookie and Second All-Star Team selections from the AHL in 2018-19 Rodrigue served as a Goaltending Consultant for the DEL’s Eisbären, a member of Germany’s top elite league and Gotteron of the Swiss Elite League prior to joining the Oilers. He won the DEL championship with Berlin in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. He was also a member of Berlin’s championship team in 2010-11. The Montreal, Quebec native has also worked with HC (LNA – Swiss Elite League), AIK (Swedish Elite League) and Dusseldorf (DEL – German Elite League) since 2009-10. Before heading to Europe, Rodrigue worked with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2003-2009 and was also a goaltending instructor at ’s Program of Excellence Goaltending Camp in 2009.
