OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY 2012

A. PURPOSE OF REPORT

To advise the Local Area Committee of the latest position regarding the plans to welcome and celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay coming to West on the 13 June 2012.

B. RECOMMENDATION

The Local Area Committee notes: a) the Olympic Relay Torch’s presence in on the 13 June b) plans for Hopetoun, Winchburgh and to welcome and celebrate the torch.

D. TERMS OF REPORT

As reported to the Local Area Committee on 19 April 2012 the Olympic Torch Relay is coming to West Lothian on 13th June.

The Olympic Torch Relay will arrive at Hopetoun House, where it will make its way through Winchburgh to Broxburn and then onto .

The Olympic Torch Relay will be in two modes:

x Convoy Mode: Flame is carried in a convoy of specialist vehicles.

x Torchbearer Mode: Flame is carried by pre-identified individuals.

The format for the day will be;

the Torch will arrive in a convoy at Hopetoun House at 4.33pm where it will change into Torchbearer Mode. To welcome the torch a schools event will run from 2.00pm to 5.00pm involving a number of schools from across West Lothian and . Activities will include: mass dance, crafts make a torch, sprints, trampolines, dressage, face painting and a 1 mile race. The torch will return to Convoy Mode and leave Hopetoun House at 5:00pm.

At 5.10pm the convoy will pass through Winchburgh, remaining in Convoy Mode throughout. To celebrate the occasion an Olympics themed family sports and games event has been arranged for young people in Craigton Park from 3.30pm to 6.00pm. The event will have a number of interactive fun activities including sports, face painting and crafts.

The final element of the visit will see the convoy arrive in Broxburn at 5.21pm. The Olympic Torch Relay will move back to Torchbearer Mode to be carried through East Mains Street before switching back to convoy mode at 5.27pm. Broxburn will also host a series of celebratory events from 3:45pm to mark the occasion with entertainment, radio Grapevine present in Argyle Court, Summer of Song in partnership with Scottish Opera, displays, cheerleaders and dancers, stalls, sports taster sessions such as spinning, Crufts award winning dog display team, and just ahead of the torch a parade led by Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band.

In addition to the event in East Mains Street Broxburn Utd Sport Club are hosting a football tournament for primary 3 pupils Albyn Park between 1.00 and 3.00. This will be followed by a further evening competition at 6.30pm.

In advance of the Broxburn event local schools have been working with Scottish Opera and Beats of Brazil to prepare for the event through funding received from Creative Scotland.

2 E. CONCLUSION

The Olympic Torch Relay coming to West Lothian provides a unique once in a lifetime opportunity for residents and visitors to West Lothian to the welcome the torch, support the torch bearers and celebrate the values of the Olympic movement.
