Onassis Foundation, Athens; Associate Professor, University of Bucharest e-mail: [email protected] Professor Franz-Lothar Altmann currently holds an A. S. Onassis Foundation fellowship at ELIAMEP in Athens. He is a Member of the Board of the `Southeast Europe Association´, Munich and Vice President of EALIZ. He is Associate Professor for Intercultural Relations at the University of Bucharest, Romania. He is also Editor-in-chief of Osteuropa-Wirtschaft and Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal for Southeast European and Black Sea Studies (quarterly). He has written nine books and some 230 articles on East- and Southeast-European economics and politics, transformation, European integration and enlargement. He has also received several research awards, among which AIESEC (Prague 1968), Kennan Institute/Woodrow Wilson Center (Washington DC 1985/86), Fulbright (Washington 1985), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Sendai/Tokyo 1994). Anagnostou Dia (Dr.) Senior Research Fellow, ELIAMEP, Athens; Lecturer, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki e-mail: [email protected] Dia Anagnostou Dia Anagnostou is a Lecturer of Politics at the Department of Balkan and Slavic Studies at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, and Research Fellow at ELIAMEP. She received her undergraduate degree (B.A) with honours from Mount Holyoke College, in South Hadley, MA, in the USA, and completed her PhD in the Department of Government at Cornell University (1999). In 1991-92, Ms. Anagnostou received a Sage Fellowship and in 1996-97 a Mellon Fellowship from Cornell University. In 1994-95, she was awarded an International Dissertation Fellowship for research in Europe, from the Social Science Research Council in New York. Dia Anagnostou was a Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Balkan Studies in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia in 1995-96, a Mary O’Boyle Post-doctoral Fellow at the Hellenic Studies Program at Princeton University in 1999-2000, and a Jean Monnet Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre in the European University Institute in 2000-2001. Her research interests lie in the fields of comparative politics of Southeast Europe and European integration, and she has published on the topics of ethnic politics, nationalism, minorities and human rights. Arisan-Eralp Nilgun (Ms.), Director of National Programme, Secretariat General for European Union Affairs, Prime Ministry of Turkey, Ankara e-mail: [email protected] Nilgun Arisan-Eralp is a graduate of Middle East Technical University, Economics Department (1982). She has a M.A. in Economic Development from Leicester University (UK, 1984) and a M.Sc. in European Studies from the LSE (UK, 1991). She has been working in the public sector on EU issues since 1987. She started as an advisor to the Minister of State in charge of European Community Affairs (Prof. Dr. Ali BOZER), then worked with Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Erdal İNÖNÜ. During the final phase of the customs union negotiations with the EU, she was Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Prime Minister on Relations with the European Union (Dr. Ali TİGREL). Before being appointed Director of National Programme in the Secretariat General for the EU Affairs (Prime Ministry of Turkey) in 2000, she was Head of Department in the General Directorate of Relations with the EU of State Planning Organization. She has also taught part time courses on EU affairs at Middle East Technical University, Ankara University and Bilkent University. She has authored a number of publications on Turkey’s EU accession process. Athanasopoulos Angelos (Mr.), Diplomatic Editor, To Vima, Athens e-mail: [email protected] Angelos Athanasopoulos was born in Athens in 1975. He studied Journalism and Mass Media at Panteion University, Athens, before realizing that his real field of interest was international relations. He holds a M.A in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the Department of International and European Studies, Panteion University. He has been working at “To Vima” newspaper since 1997, initially as a sports editor and since 2000, as an international news editor. He was deputy editor-in-chief of the international news department of the daily edition (2006 – 2007), before becoming a diplomatic news editor in November 2007. Since September 2006, he is a regular columnist for “To Vima” daily, writing on international and diplomatic news. In 2002, he worked with two distinguished colleagues, Alexis Papahelas and Tasos Telloglou, in writing the book “Folder November 17th”, which presented the history of Greece’s largest terrorist organization. He has also worked for the New Greek Television (NET). He has published academic articles, mainly concerning the Balkans (Kosovo and Bosnia), and is currently doing research on the future of transatlantic relations. In 2006, he was a German Marshall Fund (GMF) Journalism Fellow and travelled around the Balkans and he has been selected as a European Marshall Memorial Fellow of the GMF for 2008. In the past, he conducted research for the Institute of Strategic and Development Studies (ISTAME) – Andreas Papandreou. He speaks English, French and enjoys travelling. Benachenhou Abdellatif (Prof.), Professor of Economic Science; Former Minister of Finance of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Algiers e-mail: [email protected] Abdellatif Benanchenchou received his Master’s Degrees in Economic Sciences and Public Law from the University of Paris in 1966 and his PhD in Economic Sciences in 1969. He has taught at the University of Algiers and Paris X and over the years has served as: Minister of Finance, Senior Economic Advisor in the Cabinet of the President of Algeria, Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Algiers, Secretary General of the Third World Economists’ Association, Chairman of the Social and Economic Affairs Commission of the FLN Party and at UNESCO. He has also written and co-authored numerous books on diverse economic issues and has over eighty contributions in various magazines and periodicals. Brok Elmar (Mr.), Member of the European Parliament, European People’s Party, Brussels e-mail: [email protected] Elmar Brok is Member of the European Parliament and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. His current political positions include, among others: Chairman of the CDU district Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Chairman of the CDU Federal Advisory Committee on European Policy, Member of the Delegation for the relations with the United States of the European Parliament and Deputy Chairman of the Transatlantic Policy Network Parliamentary Group. In 2003-2004 he served as the EP's representative at the Intergovernmental Conference for the EU Constitutional Treaty (2003/2004), as well as for the treaties of Amsterdam (1996/97), Nice (2000) and Lisbon (2007). Elmar Brok was also EPP Coordinator in the EU- Constitutional Convention and the EP’s representative in the Council's Reflection Group preparing for the reform of the Maastricht Treaty. 3 Cameron Fraser (Dr.), Director, EU-Russia Centre, Brussels e-mail: [email protected] Fraser Cameron is a former European Commission advisor and well known policy analyst and commentator on EU and international affairs. He is Director of the EU-Russia Centre, Director of EuroFocus-Brussels, an Adjunct Professor at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, and Senior Advisor to the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels. Dr Cameron has been a visiting professor at several universities and is the author of several books and articles on the EU and external relations. His recent books include An Introduction to European Foreign Policy, The Future of Europe and US Foreign Policy after the Cold War (all published by Routledge). Danilov Dmitri (Dr.), Director for European Security Studies, Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow e-mail: [email protected] Dr Danilov was born in 1960 in Moscow. He graduated from Moscow University’s economic department in 1982 from where he was also awarded his Ph.D in 1987. He is Head of the Department for European Security Studies at the Institute of Europe, Moscow, Russian Academy of Sciences. In the past, (1982- 1989) he worked as senior researcher in the analytic cell of the General Staff and participated in the preparation of analytical reports for the Russia government and the public sector, as well as for international organisations. He received the State grant “for distinguished academics” in 2000-2003. He is a full Member of the Russian Academy of Security and Defence and also Member of the Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Association board, the Association of European Studies, and the Steering Committee of the European Security Forum. He specialises on European security institutions, military-political aspects of transatlantic relations, Russian foreign and security policy. He has written 150 scientific publications including articles on peace-keeping, conflict prevention and defence economics. Demes Pavol (Mr.), Director, Central and Eastern Europe, Bratislava Office, German Marshall Fund of the United States e-mail: [email protected] Pavol Demes has been the Director for Central and Eastern Europe of the German Marshall Fund of the United States since January 2000, and is based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of the SAIA-Service Center for the Third Sector. He also served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of the Slovak Republic (1993-97), and in 1991-92 he was the Slovak Minister of International Relations. An internationally recognized NGO leader, Demes has served on the boards of national and international associations and foundations. Prior to the "Velvet Revolution" in November 1989, Demes was a bio-medical researcher at Comenius University in Bratislava. He is a graduate of Charles University in Prague (1980).
