While the dissertation itself is an overwhelming feat, this acknowledgements section feels equally heavy. And as someone who once detested both school and writing, there’s a lot of people I am thankful for. It is a fact that I could not completed a PhD, let alone a dissertation, on my own. Graduate school wears you down, and especially one framed By the 2016 presidential election and 2020 uprisings, rise of white supremacy, and a gloBal pandemic, graduate school is really hard and writing is the last thing you want to do. Yellow Skin, White Masks Mina Yang Abstract: Ethnic studies scholars have long bemoaned the near absence of Asians on the big and small screens and popular music charts in the United States, rendering them as outsiders vis-à-vis the American public sphere. In the last few years, however, Asians have sprung up on shows like “Glee” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” in disproportionately large numbers, challenging entrenched stereotypes and creating new audiovisual associations with Asianness. Music, as purveyed by the mgm Grand Holly- wood Theater and Monte Carlo Resort & Casino in the heart of Las Vegas–the entertainment mecca of the United States–is supposedly the very inspi- ration for life itself. Featuring JabbaWockeeZ, the winning hip-hop group from the ½rst season of the televised dance competition America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC), MÜS.I.C. (read both as “music” and as “muse I see”) is comprised of fanciful episodes from a life lived creatively. The show featured synchronized dancing, comic miming, athletic feats, extravagant lighting effects, and glittery costumes, held together by a thumping soundtrack made up of familiar tunes, old and new. IN FOCUS: Asian American Film and Media Introduction by BRIAN HU and VINCENT N. PHAM, editors he opportunity to assemble an In Focus section dedicated to Asian American film and media, a first for Cinema Journal, is a special moment, bringing a field at least a quarter century in the making into the mainstream of cinema and media studies. But if Asian American media history has taught us anything, it’s that crossing overT should always give us pause. The Oliver Stone–produced The Joy Luck Club’s (Wayne Wang, 1993) cross-generational story of four Chinese American families earned critical acclaim, being placed on Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel’s list of top ten films of 1993. All-American Girl (ABC, 1994–1995) debuted in 1994 as the first prime-time sitcom with an all Asian American cast and marked Margaret Cho’s entrée into the living rooms of mainstream America. Better Luck Tomorrow ( Justin Lin, 2002) rocked the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, legendary for its conflict-ridden question-and-answer session that spurred Ebert to come to defend the movie against hostile audience members, and became the first movie acquired by MTV Films. Despite this collective excitement, these well-heralded instances of rare prime-time and commercial exposure have all proved less pivotal than audiences, commentators, and studios once imagined, relegated to discussions of missed opportunities or representational politics in the Asian American community. Repeatedly in the mainstream, Asian American communities have seen hopes dashed and voices marginal- ized in a racial landscape that is predominantly white and occasionally black. -

Vang Sociology, University Of Wisconsin Superior Dr. Chris Cherry Texas A&M University HOLLYWOOD’S PORTRAYALS OF ASIAN AMERICAN MEN 2 ABSTRACT The American audience of film theatre can be seen since the 20th century. A domicile, where it’s a reflection of our society’s ambiguous and unambiguous biases. Where sometimes the reel become real. This can be seen through Hollywood’s insidious ways of their portrayal of Asian Men in their movies. These reinforcements of misconceptions have led to a manifestation of discrimination in real life. 2 HOLLYWOOD’S PORTRAYALS OF ASIAN AMERICAN MEN 3 Introduction Just hearing the name, Long Duk Dong, a racist character created by Hollywood, puts a sinister smile on someone’s face. Think of one of the latest Hollywood films you watched, the chances are that it is surrounded by negative Asian stereotypes and you probably did not notice it. This unawareness of racism/sexism against Asian men has become socially accepted as “normal,” which no one wants to talk about and has now become symbolic of all Asian American men. This research is to analyze and inform people to make them comprehend these biases that lurk in front of them through the institution of American cinema. Movies are one of the many forms of pedagogies to the social world and give choppy narrative knowledge on subjects of race, gender, sex and class. According to bell hooks, American author, feminist, social activist and professor at Berea College, states, “(movies) give the reimagined, reinvented version of the real” (hooks, 1996). -

YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, share, view, and comment on originally created videos. It is an arena where ordinary people with little or no funding can compete with mega corporations on an even playing field to achieve higher viewership and a loyal following. This article takes a look at how a group of amateurs rose from obscurity to become YouTube sensations with literally millions of fans and substantial earnings. Using these YouTubers’ roadmap to success, this article lists practical suggestions for launching a successful YouTube career. © 2012 Liz Lavaveshkul. Published by JICLT. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction If someone told you they could give you a roadmap to a sure-fire way to become world-renown and earn thousands of dollars a year doing what you loved to do through YouTube, would you be interested? If they added that this venture required very little capital and could be launched within a few hours, would you be ready to sign up? Are you ready to become the next YouTube sensation? Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic wand or crystal ball to guarantee success, but a tool exists that provides a window to success. By looking into YouTube’s past and studying YouTube success stories, you can learn from how and why things came to be and make reasonable choices that could favorably affect your future. Founded in February 2005, YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, share, view, and comment on originally created videos. -

Abstract: This dissertation explores the development of Asian American YouTube channels. Since the mainstream media are not offering any characters which are a fair representation of Asians, YouTube has become an outlet for Asian Americans to represent themselves. In order to break the general stereotype of a person of Asian descent, these YouTube channels post videos to empower Asians globally. Their success includes billions of views, job opportunities, collaborations, sponsorships and creating a community online which takes their relationship offline. However, this “phenomena” has not evolved without any difficulties. There are ignorant and racist responses since registered users can post comments. The methodological approach is case studies of Wong Fu Productions, NigaHiga, KevJumba and Michelle Phan amongst other North American YouTube channels. Their videos and the movement were perused in order to map out the “phenomena”. These “YouTubers” have gained success yet there is mainstream success to achieve. The dissertation also examines the defect of YouTube; the hater comments and racism online. In conclusion, YouTube has created a space where Asian Americans can themselves represent and break stereotypes. -

Using a combination of virtual ethnography and real-time ethnographic fieldwork, this thesis explores not only the reception and framing of Asian American musicians on the Internet, but also the content of the videos uploaded by these artists. In addition, the strategies employed by Asian American Internet musicians, including the activation of panethnicity, presentation of masculinity, and self-branding across social media platforms, play a significant role in these artists’ degree of success and visibility through streaming websites such as YouTube. Ultimately, this thesis argues that while YouTube provides a platform for wider Asian American visibility, it also serves to ghettoize Asian American artists, providing them with limited options for self-representation to gain success. -
