8 DOORAL ROUNDUP OCTOBER 2020 A TOUCH OF Elegance

If your bathroom isn’t that big, that doesn’t mean it can’t be luxurious, even on a budget. You can create the perfect bathroom look that brings warmth to your mind, body and soul. Simple but elegant small touches will have more impact in a small space and won’t be too costly. Adding a soothing colour palette can add serenity to your bathroom. Dark colours and deep shades are particularly luxurious, especially when combined with a touch of timber. Opt for high-end tiles and splashbacks such as Carara wall tiles with a complementing grey floor tile.

Create feature areas by using a free-standing bath and a wall hung vanity and an above counter basin to reflect the lines of the bathtub.

Using shutters adds a luxurious, high end feel. The same applies to flooring. A bold or distinctive floor will transform the look of your bathroom. Shave Cabinet with This white and grey tiled bathroom gains visual warmth when combined with a complementing integrated shelf and chrome and black timber top. tapware add a wow-factor. OCTOBER 2020 DOORAL ROUNDUP 9 FROM BEGINNERS TO THE ELITE

Brothers, Wafa and Safa Bayazidi, migrated to Australia from COMMUNITY NEWS COMMUNITY Kurdistan in 1995, having spent their first eight years of life in a Refugee camp. They then adopted Australia as their first home. Growing up in Western Sydney, both brothers competed in high levels of sports, both with dreams of one day owning a fitness facility. On October 16th, 2016, they opened the first Nex Level centre in the heart of Rouse Hill, their adopted community. They wanted to provide their community with state-of-the-art facilities and to give the best experience possible. When they opened Dural in February 2019, they didn't want to open up' just another facility'; they aspired to open a one of a kind fitness hub. The Dural facility is truly one of a kind. Its 3000 square meter facility has everything under one roof, starting with a world-class 24/7 fitness centre, Strength and Conditioning group fitness classes, Hot Yoga, Yoga, Pilates and of course Australia's Largest Recovery Centre. Wafa Bayazidi has coached some of the best junior representative athletes in Australia. YES, we Arcadian Quilters are still meeting in Heritage Park at the moment, making the most of beautiful days, almost HOT sunshine and always happy surroundings. This colourful treasure brings nature indoors, the greens, the blues and the brights of flowers, cheerful for any bed cover .... lucky someone ?? Meeting in Heritage Park (Castle Hill) has been a great bonus for our group, the numbers increase each meeting with members able to enjoy sunshine, companionship and hand sewing. We are swapping patterns, magazines and novels as well as ideas and fabrics. Our colour-wheel blocks have been the core-activity during these COVID-days / weeks / months and we continue to add blocks in preparation for the quilts which will start to take shape as soon as we get back to our venue at the Galston Community Centre, I for one am looking forward to seeing beautiful, bright works-of-art !!! Meanwhile other Charity Quilt projects continue, this Ohio Star variation is the perfect man-quilt with good strong colours, yet has a cheery whimsy of spring at the centre of each star. Our meetings will continue in the Park (until further notice) ... being held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, please contact Carole on 9894 7749 for more information. Continue to be well, keep safe and keep that SMILE handy.

OCTOBER 2020 DOORAL ROUNDUP 43 PROJECTS KEEP MEN ACTIVE IN COVID-19 TIMES!!!! By Chris Thomas

COMMUNITY NEWS COMMUNITY During these recent months of COVID uncertainty, the men of the DURAL MEN’S SHED have thrived on activity. They have used the time wisely to keep connected, to keep their minds active, and used skills to benefit the community, whilst maintaining safety standards. They have found a way to beat the “Virus blues”, keep active physically and mentally, and enjoy companionship, all in a safe environment. Projects have included assisting in the Cobargo rebuild with 12 loads of a ten- ton truck taking goods to the South Coast. Also, they have built some outdoor hardwood tables for a Rouse Hill café, as well as making a start on renovating 15 outdoor tables for Galston Primary School. A metal project for the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE building some magazine stands has been done as well as donating a pyrography decorated clock to the Hare and Forbes 90th year birthday. The Spring Cart was a very kind donation by our local State Another 1910 vintage mode of transport was the MODEL T FORD Member, Ray Williams, and over a number of months a team or “tin lizzie” as they were known. This quarter scale replica of men led by woodworker John Daley and metalworker Louis was brought back from the USA by Michael Pentecost, the son of Laurie, one of the shed members. Michael is a FORD dealer who imports mustangs and when he saw this replica of past times, he could not resist getting it. So, the shed men, under the leadership of Ken Buckland, Hugh Schneider, Colin Heald, and Ken Coady, are bringing tin lizzie back to life as a magnificent reminder of vintage transport. It can seat two children, runs on a 125cc Briggs and Stratton, and can get up to 15km per hour. However, it will only be used as a show piece at car shows and fetes. What a contrast of the times…1910...the horse and cart on the way out and the automobile just on the way in… Best not to take this comparison any further or someone is going to suggest the shed men are also on the way out!!

OCTOBER 2020 DOORAL ROUNDUP 47 The exhibition is on from 26th September SALLY STOKES until 29th November 2020.

Local artist Sally Stokes’ painting “Among the mangroves” has been selected for the Salon Wynne as part of the Salon des Refusés at the SH Ervin Gallery at Observatory Hill.

ARTS & MUSIC & ARTS The Salon des Refusés was initiated by the S.H. Ervin Gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered into the Archibald and Wynne Prizes which were not selected for display in the ofcial exhibition. The concept was inspired by the art exhibition held in 1863 in Paris for those artists who had been refused for the ofcial Salon. Sally makes her magic in a remote part of the Hawkesbury, accessible only by boat and only when tides allow. She canoes to the mangroves in Kulkah Bay where she is captivated by the cathedral stained-glass effects of the light. While the tide is high, she floats in her canoe among the mangroves and produces hundreds of drawings in charcoal, ink and gouache. When she returns to her studio in Dural, the drawings metamorphose into a series of paintings of which “Among the mangroves” is one. Mangroves act as a highly effective filtration system for the Hawkesbury. Sally’s creative process mirrors this. Drawings are sifted through until an essence is distilled in paint on linen.

TOP IDEAS AND TIPS GARDENING TO BUILD A COLOURFUL GARDEN

By Katrina Langlands

Not only is your garden a wonderful place to retreat to when you want some relaxation or quiet company, but it’s a great way to invigorate yourself. Although some may love a lot of green on green, there are others who want to have an extremely colourful garden. For those who have already planted your garden around your landscaping design elements, you may not want to completely redesign the look and feel via gardening. Instead, here are some top ideas for infusing your garden with colourful life, without detracting from your current gardening displays. Have Seating? Use Colourful Cushions: Whether you have a table and chairs, seating around your firepit or spa, or is that you don’t necessarily need a patio to have built-in bench seats, adding some implement. Rather, find a few sturdy trees and set colourful cushions or sectional pillows can it up. This can make a darker corner of the garden go a long way. Not only can you accent these thrive with colour. with the colours of your existing gardening displays but you can spruce up areas that may not have a lot Brighten up your Walkways: of colour to them. If you have a larger garden that features walkways, consider topping the pathways up with mulch or gravels, this will add Add in a Hammock: texture & colour. If your garden is all about relaxation, consider buying or getting a brightly coloured hammock. The great thing about this idea Add in Lighting: This is a relaxing way to add colour to your garden. What makes this great is that you can add in lighting either along pathways, along your patio deck or along the garden areas.

Choose Water Feature Displays: This is a fun idea because you can either go big or small with it. You could choose a sprawling fountain with lighting, plants, and different water theatrics, or you could go with something small like a vase water feature. Not only can these add colour but they will enhance the atmosphere of your entire garden.

Member for Castle Hill Ray Williams MP said this is an exciting opportunity for community groups, not-for- profits and councils to help kick-start youth focused projects. “There are so many great local organisations across our region delivering projects that drive youth participation and engagement,” Mr Williams said. “There is $1.5 million available for projects that help young people in our local area learn new skills, make friends and create stronger communities.” The program provides one-off, time-limited grants between $10,000 and $50,000 to not-for-profit organisations and local councils for projects that remove barriers preventing youth from taking up new opportunities. Since the program began in 2012, Youth Opportunities has provided almost $12 million in funding to close to 247 projects across the state. Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services said last year’s recipients included programs promoting positive mental health, communication skills and leadership. “The last 12 months have been tough for communities across our state, and these grants are an opportunity to support programs that engage young people during this critical time,” Mr Ward said. Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women said more than half of last year’s grant recipients involved programs in regional and rural NSW. “This is a fantastic way of getting projects off the ground which empower young people and encourage them to participate in their community,” Mrs Taylor said.

NORTHHOLM GRAMMAR SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWS THE POWER OF STUDENT-TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS By Chris Bradbury, Principal of Northholm Grammar

As we approach Term 4, the relationships and connection more likely to facilitate motivation and engage high achieving for student and teacher has grown. The impact that teachers students if they frame their practice in relational terms. At have made on their students is clear to parents and carers. In Northholm, we want our students to feel connected to ensure conversations, they reference high expectations, a caring and optimal motivation, engagement and achievement. This, in my nurturing environment, high energy or a strong command opinion, is what quality teaching looks like. of curriculum. In other cases, parents have commented early on that their child is trying to ‘work the teacher out’. In our experience at Northholm this is a positive perspective. Teacher-Student relationships take time to develop. Quite often a demanding approach to excellence can be initially met with some apprehension. However, we know that great learning should be uncomfortable and challenge is critical to scholarship. The greater the connectedness on personal and emotional levels between the teacher and student in the academic context, the greater the scope for academic motivation, engagement and achievement. Teachers don’t just teach disciplines (Mathematics, Science, English, etc), they teach people. Education is about connectedness, belonging and being relational. From a learning perspective, a strong sense of relatedness and connectedness better positions students to take on challenges, set positive goals and establish high expectations that extend and motivate them. At Northholm, the building of positive student-teacher relationships is underpinned by a classroom and School-wide commitment to connective instruction. Our best teachers are

OCTOBER 2020 DOORAL ROUNDUP 57 Get Ready Weekend 2020 round-up RURAL FIRE NEWS FIRE RURAL The Rural Fire Service this year again hosted the Get Ready Weekend in September with events held by Brigades across NSW. Due to the current restrictions, both limited face-to-face activities, supplemented by a greater online and social media presence, was used to present this years messages. The campaign is designed to prompt communities, property owners and residents make, or review, their Bushfire Survival Plan. This plan is what they would do if a bushfire starts in their area. The main theme for this years’ event was “How fireproof is your plan”. Dural brigade had crews out on Saturday 19 September in the Carters Road and Sebastian Drive areas ready to answer questions from the community. It was heartening to see a number of residents take the time to stop and have a chat with our members about their Bushfire Survival Plans and to pick up information for how to prepare their properties ready for the next bushfire season. It was also great to see that many of the people that we spoke with on the day already had plans of their own in place in the event of a fire, which is encouraging for the brigade. Additionally, it was also good to see that many had discussed their plans with all of their family. If there is a fire in your area you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS Facts: • Your safest option is to leave early. A bushfire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difcult to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block roads and make driving dangerous. It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. • Bush fires are unpredictable and in dangerous conditions, you may not get an Emergency Alert message in time. It’s important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area and that you have made a bushfire survival plan. Leaving early is your safest option. • Grass fires can move three times as fast as a bush fire, they start easily and spread quickly. Grass fires will pose a risk in NSW this fire season so make sure you have a cleared area around your home. • Lots of rain means lots of fuel for bush and grass fires. It only takes a few days of hot, dry and windy weather to cure grass and make it flammable. • Only 7% of NSW was impacted by bushfire in the 2019/2020 fire season.

As always, keep up to date with what’s happening on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DuralRuralFireBrigade.
