The Protestant Missionaries As Bible Translators
THE PROTESTANT MISSIONARIES AS BIBLE TRANSLATORS: MISSION AND RIVALRY IN CHINA, 1807-1839 by Clement Tsz Ming Tong A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Religious Studies) UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2016 © Clement Tsz Ming Tong, 2016 ABSTRACT The first generation of Protestant missionaries sent to the China mission, such as Robert Morrison and William Milne, were mostly translators, committing most of their time and energy to language studies, Scripture translation, writing grammar books and compiling dictionaries, as well as printing and distributing bibles and other Christian materials. With little instruction, limited resources, and formidable tasks ahead, these individuals worked under very challenging and at times dangerous conditions, always seeking financial support and recognition from their societies, their denominations and other patrons. These missionaries were much more than literary and linguistic academics – they operated as facilitators of the whole translational process, from research to distribution; they were mission agents in China, representing the interests and visions of their societies and patrons back home. Using rare Chinese Bible manuscripts, including one that has never been examined before, plus a large number of personal correspondence, journals and committee reports, this study seeks to understand the first generation of Protestant missionaries in their own mission settings, to examine the social fabrics within which they operated as “translators”, and to determine what factors and priorities dictated their translation decisions and mission strategies. Although Morrison is often credited with being the first translator of the New Testament into Chinese, the truth of the matter is far more complex. -

First Place Humanities & Fine Arts
LIBRARY AWARD FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH First Place Humanities & Fine Arts www.library.ucsb.edu Zheng Chen Dr. Xiaowei Zheng & Dr. Miroslave Chavez-Garcia History Department Reflective Essay In this project, I examined 19th century local literature concerning entertainment and a music genre known as Yüe Ou in Guangzhou, China and its Pearl River delta hinterland. These included poetry and prose collectanea, diaries and travelogues by local poets and notables of Guangzhou. In addition, I also examined numerous volumes of provincial, prefectural and county- level gazetteers of Guangdong, China, covering a time span of two hundred years, from the late Ming (late 17th century) to the mid Qing in (19th century). Overall, this project looks at Yüe Ou, a localist music genre in 19th century Guangzhou’s entertainment world, as a medium that played a vital role in the local elites’ cause to engender and legitimate local identities, valorize local culture, and vitalize social mobility in Guangzhou. Not only did it offer emotional escape for educated elites who failed in the Chinese officialdom, it also justified their merrymaking actions as patrons in a subaltern area of conflicting believes, and served a medium for descendants of migrants to portray themselves as Guangzhou natives and merchants to redefine themselves as members of the educated elites. The way that my research direction and question were determined came in twofold. As a native of Guangzhou and having spent a short childhood in one of its oldest suburb area, I was exposed to the local music tradition outside of Guangzhou’s metropolitan impression. Country folks of my great-grandfather’s generation in their leisure sung Yüe Ou songs on wooden boats anchored by the banks of the Pearl River, and radios in every house with opened doors played the clamor of Cantonese opera. -
Rules of Romanization of Geographical Names Applied in Poland
E/CONF.105/63/CRP.63 23 June 2017 Original: English Eleventh United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names New York, 8-17 August 2017 Item 14 (a) of the provisional agenda* Writing systems and pronunciation: Romanization Rules of romanization of geographical names applied in Poland Submitted by Poland ** * E/CONF.105/1 ** Prepared by Maciej Zych, Commission on Standardization of Geographical Names Outside the Republic of Poland Rules of romanization of geographical names applied in Poland The Commission on Standardization of Geographical Names Outside the Republic of Poland is the authority responsible for names of geographical objects located outside Poland. One of Commission’s tasks is to determine what names for these objects should be used in the Polish language. They may be both: Polish exonyms or original names – endonyms. In the case of endonyms originally written in the Latin alphabet, the Commission recommends to use original letters with diacritic marks as well as any non-standard letters (i.e. æ, ð, ǝ). In the case of endonyms originally written in a non-Roman writing system, it is recommended to render them in a Romanized form. Due to above mentioned scopes of activity the Commission on Standardization of Geographical Names Outside the Republic of Poland establishes also romanization rules governing names of geographical objects originally expressed by means of non-Roman writing systems. These rules are determined primarily for names in the languages used in Commission’s publications, including the Official list of Polish geographical names of the world, where, apart from the Polish exonyms, endonyms are given, including endonyms rendered in a Romanized form. -
