It certainly has been a time of discovery and it has been a time of trial and change. Each of the Benefices in the deanery and consequently each parish have experienced some sort of change and loss. Our own Benefice of North Kernow will be split as of Easter Day, the 21st April. The Parishes of Stratton and Launcells will move into the northern Future dates for your diary ~ cluster where they will join with Poughill, Kilkhampton, and Events at St Michael’s: Morwenstow. Auction: Saturday 7th September This is in effect an ending and a new beginning, the ending of what Quiz at Brendon Arms 1st November 7:30pm was and the beginning of what is to come. The northern cluster of 26 3 churches is now well along the way in the process of finding a new priest to lead them forward. I will be ministering in the central cluster enabling it to move forward in the work of discovering the kingdom and growing the church. Let us remember that, as Jesus had explicit trust in his Father as he made that Journey to Jerusalem and his death on a cross and his ultimate resurrection, we too might see God in this process and also witness the resurrection of our churches in this deanery. My prayers and best wishes go to you all as we begin this new chapter in the life of Stratton Deanery. Fr. • Page 1 of 19 the Origins of Camellia X Williamsii at Caerhays the History
The Origins of Camellia x williamsii at Caerhays The history of the camellia in UK horticulture is a rather peculiar story. Camellias enjoyed rising popularity in the 1840s but, largely, only in the grandest country houses with large conservatories as at Chatsworth, Chiswick and Sheffield Park. The perception was that camellias were delicate, tender, plants suitable only for growing under the protection of glass. This was very probably because early forms of Camellia japonica from Japan were being imported from much warmer Mediterranean climates in Spain, Portugal and Italy where, again, they were being grown in the courtyards and walled gardens of wealthy nobility and landowners. The situation in Cornwall in the latter half of the 19th Century was different. Ships’ captains operating out of Falmouth were commissioned to bring back new plants from overseas by Cornish landowners and industrialists. One of the earliest examples of a collection of Camellia japonica varieties can still be found today in decline and over maturity in the walled garden at Scorrier House near Redruth. Here they still grow up against sheltering high stone walls. Tregothnan Estate near Truro also has one of the very earliest collections of Camellia japonica dating from the 1820s. It would appear that the plants which you still see today in good order were actually moved (and cut back) to their current location in the arboretum in about 1923. So camellias were far from being unknown in English gardens, but they had not exactly become popular or widely grown. One has to remember that in its pure specie form Camellia japonica has small, often sparse, and fairly unexciting single red flowers.

Open Gardens Visit beautiful gardens, support Cornwall Hospice Care Title sponsor www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/opengardens 40 years ago Enid Dalton-White MBE, one of the pioneers who ensured the vision of a hospice for Cornwall, invited visitors to the grounds of her home in Polruan to raise vital funds to build Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. She set a trend that continues today through our Open Gardens scheme, now in its 9th year. A long-standing supporter of the charity and the Open Gardens campaign is Cornish gardener, George Kestell; As I look out of the office window across my own garden, I see the range of Hellebores, Camellias and Snowdrops all set off by the dark purple of the Pittosporum. These winter flowers keep me going through the tough times. Lately everyone has been affected by the Coronavirus crisis, lockdown has been difficult for many, but these winter gems have been a source of delight. Unfortunately, charities like Cornwall Hospice Care are struggling, beds are under threat due to the closure of shops and limited fundraising opportunities. However, this Cornish healthcare charity is to me like these winter flowers, there to help us through the tough times. Having received support from the hospice I know everyone involved in this charity does an amazing amount of work to help both patients and their families in the hospices and through community support. Hopefully within the next couple of months some sort of ‘normality’ can resume, the weather will be warmer and all the lovely gardens in this guide will be bursting with colour and with friends and families enjoying their delights.

FOE CHARLES WILLIAM, GEOEGE CLEMENT, AND FEEDEEIC BOASE, BY WILLIAM POLLARD, PRINTER, NORTH STREET, EXETER. 1876. >*5/ PREFACE. The following account of the Boase family and of persons with whom they have been and are connected in marriage is now printed for family use only ; and with the twofold object of preserving the information collected by the compilers of this work, and of eliciting from the various heads of families further and more accurate details about their own branches. This must therefore be considered in the light of a preliminary sketch to be filled up more fully on a future occasion. The difficulties of writing even a short work of this nature will be known to all who have been engaged in similar pursuits ; no apology is there- fore offered for the occurrence of a certain number of mistakes which were unavoidable, since almost every line contains a fact or a date. Mr. George Bown Millett of Penzance is now engaged in editing the earliest register of the parish of Madron, a work which will be useful to place beside this family history, as by its use it wdl be possible to verify many of the dates here mentioned and add further particulars.
