The most substantial change in this new edition is the integration of an Italian translation. As with the German and the French translations the English keyterms have been translated into Italian and the tree structure as well as the alphabetical list of Italian terms was built. Based on the first multilingual edition 11.2002 the initial Italian translation was done by Federica Bert within the framework of her dissertation to graduate at the University of Interpreters and Translators in Trieste, Italy. During her work she was supervised by the homeopathic practitioners Dr. Fabio Burigana, Trieste, as well as by Dr. Bruno Rupini, Milan. After finishing the translation the files were reviewed by two independent Italian homeopaths, Prof. Valter Masci, Rome and Dott.ssa. Antonella Ronchi, Milan who gave us their valuable comments. In the further course the initial translation had to be adapted to the vocabulary of the third multilingual edition. Lara Pauletto and Harald Nilo, both from Loacker Remedia and Dr. Ivo Bianchi, Milan, where very helpful in this part of the work. All these experts gave their time and expertise free of charge to achieve the objective of the Documentation subcommittee, the development of an extended multilingual version of the thesaurus. In addition to the Italian translation the thesaurus was at the same time revised on a large scale. First, 109 scope notes were added or modified. With this we brought the work on the scope notes to an end. Secondly, minor changes in the hierarchy, some new terms and synonyms were inserted and a few terms were changed or deleted. These changes result from several discussions at the meetings of the ECH Subcommittee documentation, where the developments in the homeopathic society and literature are kept under continuous surveillance. We invite all indexers to work with this multilingual thesaurus and to use it for indexing documents on homeopathy. Vibration modulation theory 7 8 Introduction to the 1st Multilingual Edition The Documentation subcommittee of the European Committee for Homeopathy has been set up to improve communication within the homeopathic community in the field of documentation and libraries. The first project was to compile a list of homeopathic libraries with details of their type of contents, borrowing procedures etc. This was published as the ”International Guide on Homoeopathic Documentation Resources”1 in 1996, and the current edition is now the 9th edition (2003). The next project was to collect lists of key terms used in indexing, in order to establish a homeopathic controlled thesaurus of key terms. The English version of the thesaurus was first published in 1998 and a revised edition (second edition) was published in 2000. We are now pleased to present the first multilingual edition, with key terms translated into French and German. It is hoped the multilingual thesaurus will become a standard, and be used widely for indexing by various groups. It has been produced by a small working party of the Documentation subcommittee consisting of Mary Gooch from British Homoeopathic Library, Glasgow, Florence Lucas from Dolisos, France, Susanne
