Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts. -

By McKinley May Under the mentorship of Joe Pellegrino ABSTRACT This paper examines the symbolism of the colors black, white, and red from ancient times to modern. It explores ancient myths, the Grimm canon of fairy tales, and modern film and television tropes in order to establish the continuity of certain symbolisms through time. In regards to the fairy tales, the examination focuses solely on the lesser-known stories, due to the large amounts of scholarship surrounding the “popular” tales. The continuity of interpretation of these three major colors (black, white, and red) establishes the link between the past and the present and demonstrates the influence of older myths and beliefs on modern understandings of the colors. -

Giuseppe Montalto Giuseppe Montalto nacque a Trapani il 14 maggio 1965 e morì a soli 30 anni il 23 dicembre 1995, ucciso da Cosa Nostra. Prestò servizio per vari anni nel carcere “Le Vallette” di Torino, prima di essere trasferito, nel 1993, a Palermo, nella tana dei boss, nella sezione di massima sorveglianza dell’Ucciardone, quella destinata ai criminali che dovevano scontare il regime carcerario del 41 bis. Era il giorno precedente la vigilia di Natale del 1995 quando in contrada Palma, una frazione di Trapani, Giuseppe Montalto fu assassinato da due killer davanti alla moglie: erano in auto e sul sedile posteriore c’era la loro figlioletta, Federica di 10 mesi. La moglie Liliana ancora non sapeva di aspettare la loro secondogenita, Ilenia, che purtroppo non conobbe mai il padre. Era un uomo generoso e buono che mostrava sempre comprensione verso chi viveva tra le sbarre per ripagare il proprio debito con lo Stato, anche quando fu trasferito in Sicilia e cominciò a lavorare a contatto con i boss dell’Ucciardone, nonostante questi continuassero ad ostentare avversione nei confronti dello Stato e delle Istituzioni anche in quel contesto seguitando a recitare la parte dei capi, protetti dallo loro stessa fama di uomini feroci e spregiudicati, nonché scrivendo e spedendo i loro ordini attraverso i pizzini. Anni dopo un pentito, Francesco Milazzo, rivelò che l’agente fu ucciso proprio perché aveva sequestrato un bigliettino fatto arrivare in carcere ai boss Mariano Agate, Raffaele Ganci e Giuseppe Graviano e Cosa nostra non gli perdonò questa applicazione delle norme nel rispetto dello Stato. -

Neo-Expressionist artists resurrected the tradition of depicting content and adopted a preference for more forthright and aggressive stylistic techniques, which favored spontaneous feeling over formal structures and concepts. The move- ment’s predominant themes, which include human angst, social alienation, and political tension reemerge in a similar bold tone in artist and poet Irno Scarani’s Cronache di luce e sangue. This unapologetic, vigorous, and sensible poetic contem- plation revisits some of the most tragic events that afflicted humanity during the twentieth century. Originating from a personal urgency to evaluate the experience of human existence and the historical calamities that bear everlasting consequences, the poems, better yet chronicles, which comprise this volume daringly examine the fear and discomfort that surround these disquieting skeletons of the past. Cronache di luce e sangue reflects the author’s firsthand experience in and expo- sure to the civil war in Italy—the highly controversial period between September 8, 1943, the date of the armistice of Cassibile, and May 2, 1945, the surrender of Nazi Germany, when the Italian Resistance and the Co-Belligerent Army joined forces in a war against Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Italian Social Republic. Born in Milan in 1937 during the final period of the Fascist regime, Scarani became acquainted with violence and war at a very young age. -

This thesis investigates how hegemonic white masculinity adopts a new mode of material accumulation by entering into an ambivalent existence as a historical agent and metahistory at the same time and continues to function as a performative identity that offers a point of identification for the working class white man suggesting that bourgeois identity is obtainable through the performance of bourgeois ethics. The thesis postulates that the phenomenal transitions brought on by industrialization and deindustrialization of 50’s through 90’s coincide with the representational changes of white masculinity from paradigmatic cowboy incarnations to the postmodern action heroes, specifically as embodied by Bruce Willis. The thesis also examines how postmodern heroes’ “intero-alterity” is further problematized by antiheroes in Tim Burton’s films.
