First run in 1809 the 2000 Guineas, a race ran for 3 year old colts and fillies and named after the amount of Prize Money on offer, was followed 5 years later, in 1814, by the addition of the 1000 Guineas, a race solely for 3 year old fillies. Both races are run on the Newmarket Rowley Mile course on consecutive days. The 2000 Guineas on day 1 is a test of speed for the thoroughbred runners and the prize money on offer for the winner this year amounts to a hefty £212,663, with the race forming the first part of the English Triple Crown which also includes the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. The English Triple Crown has been won by 15 horses over its years (including 3 winners of substitute races at Newmarket during World War I). The most recent and most popular is Nijinsky back in 1970 ridden by the famous Lester Piggott. Steve Mellish explains in the video below why achieving the Triple Crown is such a difficult task. • Aim for Perfection
THE AGA KHAN STUDS Success Breeds Success Sea The Stars “ He’s perfect – the perfect racing machine. He is the point to which thoroughbred breeding, after 300 years, has arrived. ” JOHN OXX Aim for Perfection Southern Hemisphere Season 2014 THE AGA KHAN STUDS Success Breeds Success From the moment he started racing in Ireland, to his final victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Sea The Stars’ record was a model of excellence and consistency. He rose through the ranks to win a Group 2 as a juvenile and six Group 1s at three with the regularity of a metronome. He showed unparalleled versatility to handle the Irish plains; the straight Rowley Mile; the stiff uphill finish at Sandown Park; the undulating Epsom Downs; the Knavesmire at York and the unique test that is Longchamp. Four years after being retired to Gilltown Stud, Sea The Stars has passed on this excellence and consistency to his progeny and is establishing himself as one of the most exciting young stallions of recent times. The Classic victories of Taghrooda in the Oaks at Epsom in the fastest time for 20 years and of Sea The Moon in the Deutsches Derby have been the highlights of seven Group victories to date. His progeny’s statistics already make compelling reading and the promise they have shown indicates further heights may soon be achieved. The following pages detail Sea The Stars’ achievements from the racetrack to the breeding shed and beyond. We are delighted to be able to give Southern Hemisphere breeders the opportunity to use a wonderful racehorse with an impeccable pedigree who has made such an outstanding start to his stud career.
