Students in grades 4-7 at MacFarland Middle School and grades 10-12 at Bell Multicultural School (many of whom come from, or have parents who come from, Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean) drew on their experiences and imaginations, working in small groups to compose monologues, dialogues, scenes, poems, and songs. Their writings became the basis of African Roots/Latino Soul. Funded by the Smithsonian Latino Center, African Roots/Latino Soul is the second Discovery Theater production to be written by students, with the guidance of some highly talented teaching artists. The first was Retratos: Portraits of our World, developed the methods of engagements in partnership with YPT and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, in conjunction with the traveling exhibition Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits. -

WE ARE THE KICKERS! The Milwaukee Kickers Story Chapter 1: “Realizing a Dream” The Wisconsin Soccer Association began a youth soccer program in 1962 with the Milwaukee County Parks & Recreation Department, which, by 1968, had become the third largest participation sport in the park system. In 1970, it moved up to second largest. Because the league program was basically ethnic-oriented, it became evident in 1968 to several people deeply involved in Milwaukee area soccer clubs that a new club needed to be formed to accommodate the growing number of American kids enjoying the game. Recognizing the lack of opportunity for the American player in an almost totally ethnic controlled sport, the 12 initiators wanted to develop the sport in a unique way to become a “traditional American” sport: to give everyone a place and a chance to play, boys and girls alike; to provide good coaching and stable administration; and, most importantly, to develop FAMILY INVOLVEMENT, which, in turn, would provide a strong volunteer base from which to operate the club. After much soul searching, these people left their respective clubs and founded the Milwaukee Kickers in November, 1968. Using the slogan, “American Soccer is Our Goal”, and choosing red and gray as club colors, the twelve Founders were: Carol and Lorenzo Draghicchio, Lew and Louise Dray, Dorothy and Frank Kral, Aleks and Helga Nikolic, Irene and Milan Nikolic, Elfriede and Sirous Samy . The fledgling club operated literally on a shoestring, relying almost entirely on car washes, rummage sales, newspaper drives and merchandise sales to finance the operation. The first adult squads competed in January, 1969, in the Indoor Season of the WSA at the Milwaukee Auditorium. -

We use this activity during our Jump Rope for Heart week as a “rest station”. Students complete one heart link each class period and are asked to write down one thing they can do to be heart healthy or a heart healthy slogan. They can decorate them if they would like and then they place them in a basket so that the links can be put together. During class, we connect some of the links then talk about the links at the end of the class as a culminating discussion about the importance of fundraising and exercise. Fundraising – Sometimes a small amount of money does not seem like it makes a difference but if you use the heart chain that is created as an example, students realize that when the links are added together they make a huge chain that goes around the gym. So, every little bit of money collected, no matter how small, adds up and can make a difference. Exercise – In much the same way, daily exercise doesn’t seem like it would have a big effect on how healthy your heart can be. The visual of the heart chain helps the students understand that if you exercise each day, it adds up and builds a strong and healthy heart. -

OB: Since we were talking about Limestone County, where I grew up, actually, this Saturday, June 25, will be the yearly memorial service at Old Bethel Cemetery. It's down in the southeast corner of the county. They are also going to have a reunion of the Kickapoo School, so-called, because my grandfather was a Kickapoo Choctaw Indian. That Kickapoo was a smaller tribe of the big tribe. And because of his helping to build that school, they always referred to it as Kickapoo. And there has not been any school in that o ld two-room schoolhouse since 1935. Even the building is gone. But three years ago somebody said: Let's try to have a reunion together with the memorial service at the cemetery because everybody who has loved ones in that cemetery also went to that school and nearly everybody bur ied in that cemetery went to that school, for that ma tter . So we called a reunion. We called it The Kickapoo Legion, because that means the survivors, you know. And , now there hadn't been any school there since 1935 and this was 1985, fifty years later. BRIGGS 2 OB: Thirty four students and one teacher showed up at that memorial service. So we continue to have it each year. -
