Within these pages you will discover the 2019 line-up of Spanish wines which got our panel of judges really talking. Wines with real wow factor, wines from across the length and breadth of Spain, produced from a myriad of native Spanish varieties and crafted in many different styles from the elegant whites up by the cool Atlantic coast to the rich velvety reds found down by the Mediterranean. There is something here for everyone. Let this Guide take you on a journey of discovery and introduce you to new wines and regions of Spain you may previously never have encountered. We are showcasing a selection of these wines at various wine fairs around the UK (see pg 6) so we hope to see many of you there! Enjoy exploring! Wines from Spain www.eatspaindrinkspain.com 3 2019 Wines from Spain Awards Judging the Wines from Spain Awards is a labour of love, not just for convinced Hispanophiles like me, but for anyone who values diversity and complexity in the glass. It’s never difficult to find experienced judges who want to come and taste the latest release from one of the world’s most exciting wine-producing countries. A number of them have been with us since the first edition of this annual competition. We don’t have to choose a strict number of wines and yet this year we magically came up with a round, perfectly formed 100. The idea is to select the best wines, rather than to choose certain styles or grape varieties, so I’m delighted that our final picks were as heterogeneous as ever. You’ll certainly be familiar with many of the denominaciones de origen represented, but others may be new or at least largely unfamiliar. It’s great to see wines from Alicante, Bullas, Cebreros, Lanzarote and Sierra de Gredos. Spain continues to offer some of the best value in the world – not the same as cheapness, by the way – and the 2019 selection has delivered once more, with wines from £7.99 to £50. I hope you enjoy tasting them as much as we did selecting them. The rare earth elements (REEs) content was determined by a high-temperature torch integrated sample introduction system (hTISIS) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The REE content was used to draw characteristic PDOs radar charts. Results indicated that the REEs fingerprint provides a good prospect to discriminate the different Spanish PDOs, except for Alicante, Castilla la Mancha, Jumilla, Utiel-Requena and Valdepeñas. Finally, for those PDOs that were not properly distinguished, a second fingerprint obtained from Ba, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and V content was used for discrimination purposes.
