WASHTENAW COUNTY TRASH TO TREASURE GUIDE WASHTENAW COUNTY SOLID WASTE DIVISION UPDATED 2021 INTRODUCTION You’ve likely heard the phrase, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” This is the approach we should take towards consumption and disposal of materials. However, applying this phrase for everything we encounter can be confusing, unclear, or outright inconvenient. What do you do with those old records or that toaster oven that you don't need anymore? What about that expired car battery and the carpet scraps out in the garage? Your old cell phones? This document is not only designed to answer these tricky questions and to help keep your reusable and recyclable materials out of the landfill, but it will also help you start thinking about the value of your objects and purchasing decisions. Can your objects be repaired instead of thrown away? If something is no longer useful to you, is it truly considered trash? Can you buy things that are useful to you without harming the environment? Here you will find creative tips on how to reduce your waste. You will also find a directory of facilities that will repair, reuse, or recycle many of your household items. You'll see how one person's trash may be a valuable resource to someone else. By working together, we can turn our trash into treasure. Buying brand new items requires resources extraction, typically fossil fuels, excess water and energy use, unregulated labor practices, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, and a higher upfront cost to the consumer. Additionally, these materials eventually need a place to go, and that is often the landfill where they will emit more greenhouse gasses, take thousands of years to degrade, or leach toxins in our soils and watersheds. Unfortunately, buying new goods is directly tied to environmental degradation; however, we can obtain items still necessary to us in a way that minimizes environmental impact: finding alternatives to new materials through equipment rentals, thrift operations, and online second-hand resources. EQUIPMENT RENTAL Many items we use are only needed occasionally, such as lawn and garden equipment, carpet steamers, power tools, etc. Renting is a great option when working on projects that require specific equipment yet do not require the item long-term. By renting equipment, you are likely saving money and ensuring that you are minimizing the resources it takes to construct new materials. Many services offered in Washtenaw County make renting a cost-effective alternative to buying the items brand new. Another strategy is to encourage tool and equipment sharing in your neighborhood. A great example is the SnowBuddy non-profit, located right in Ann Arbor. Neighbors of the Water Hill neighborhood collectively purchased a commercial snowblower and use volunteers to clear their sidewalks in the winter.
