NOVEMBER 2016 Exhibitions, Events, and Programs at the Crocker Art Museum

CONTINUING EXHIBITIONS

“Claire Falkenstein: Beyond Sculpture” October 2 through December 31, 2016 Claire Falkenstein (1908–1997) was one of America’s most experimental and productive 20th-century artists. Relentlessly exploring media, techniques, and processes with uncommon daring and intellectual rigor, she moved from one art center to another, working first in the San Francisco Bay Area, then Paris, and New York, and finally, Los Angeles. Her reputation today rests primarily on her sculpture, which was often radical and ahead of its time, yet she was also an inventive painter and maker of prints, jewelry, glass, films, stage sets for dance, public murals, fountains, and monumental architectural commissions. Although Falkenstein’s extensive oeuvre can appear bewilderingly diverse, her pieces are based on several distinctive structural systems, which became her personal, formal vocabulary. This retrospective exhibition traces the development of Falkenstein’s work both chronologically and geographically through key works from the early 1930s through the 1990s, encompassing nearly every media she explored.

“Highest Heaven: Spanish and Portuguese Colonial Art from the Roberta and Richard Huber Collection” October 23, 2016 through January 22, 2017 “Highest Heaven” explores a time when art flourished in the Iberian colonial possessions of the ”Altiplano” (high plains) of South America, which stretch from northern Argentina to Peru. Through approximately 107 , , ivories, objects in silver, and furniture, the exhibition traces the development and spread of the Catholic faith through the creation and use of religious art for devotion and instruction. The objects are drawn from the distinguished collection of Roberta and Richard Huber of , built over the course of three decades.

“A Show of Force: Sculpture by Allan Houser (Haozous) Featuring Recent Gifts from Loren G. Lipson” October 30, 2016 through February 26, 2017 Internationally recognized for his iconic figurative and modernist sculptures featuring Native American people and themes, Allan Capron Haozous (1914–1994) became known to the world as Allan Houser. He is widely considered the most influential Native American artist in modern times. With three decades as an art teacher and a legacy of articulating tradition through innovation, he still inspires artists to express their cultural heritage and individual experience with originality. “A Show of Force” showcases 15 sculptures in bronze and stone created during the last two decades of the artist’s life. Family, spirituality, and farm life, as well as the transmission of cultural traditions and skills to the next generation, were important themes to Houser and all are represented in the exhibition. Highlights include rare

~ Page 11 ~ Crocker Art Museum – November 2016 Tidbits examples of Houser’s work—a reclining nude titled “By the Water’s Edge,” and the focal point of the exhibition, “Force.” The Crocker Art Museum acquired “Force” and seven additional sculptures presented in the exhibition with the generous support of Dr. Loren G. Lipson.

OPENING EXHIBITION

“Reuniting the Masters: European Drawings from West Coast Collections” November 13, 2016 through February 5, 2017 This innovative exhibition reunites European drawings that have traveled across centuries and continents to different modern collections on the West Coast. By coincidence or by design, drawings by the same artist, for the same project, and even from the same sketchbook, have made their way separately. Bringing these long-estranged drawings together again both illuminates the work and process of specific artists in the rich history of European draughtsman ship and also brings forward the history of drawings collectors in the West, from railroad magnates such as E. B. Crocker to Hollywood actors such as Cary Grant and Vincent Price.

~ Page 47 ~ ~ Page 48 ~ ~ Page 49 ~ ~ Page 50 ~ Project Update The Green Line to the Airport project team continues progress with the technical analysis for the Draft Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Study (EIR/EIS). These studies will continue through 2016 and 2017.

Beginning next week on Monday, August 15, the project team will be conducting noise and vibration testing at 25 locations along the proposed route for about one week. These measurements will be used to compare existing noise and vibration conditions along the corridor against levels during construction and operation of the new light rail line.

The noise and vibration testing will occur at various locations along the proposed route and near the proposed maintenance facility on Academy Way. The equipment will be installed at each location for no more than 24 hours collecting important noise and vibration data. The equipment will not impact traffic or public access along the corridor. You may see monitoring equipment near trees, fences, and utility structures or may receive a knock on the door notifying you of upcoming testing near your property. The testing equipment will be labeled with a Green Line Project tag and contact information if you have any questions. What’s Next? Over the next few months, the project team will:

 Continue to meet with state and federal agencies regarding sensitive biological resources, the American River crossing, flood hazards, and cultural resources  Prepare ridership forecasts, including estimates of the passengers that may be riding the Green Line to exciting new venues along the corridor such as the Golden 1 Center, the Major League Soccer Stadium, and the Kaiser regional medical facility  Develop visual simulations to illustrate how the future Green Line will look
