Homage to Piero Tosi (Costume Designer)
The Scenographer presents Homage to Piero Tosi (costume designer) When I arrive at the Gino Carlo Sensani costume department accompanied by a student of the National School of Cinema, it does not in the least surprise me that Tosi receives me whilst keeping his back to me, intent on making some adjustment to a student’s problematic sketch. He pronounces a rapid greeting then lets pass a perfect lapse of time, neither too extended nor too brief, before turning to face me. Thoroughbred of the stage and screen, director of himself and in part an incorrigible actor, with an acknowledged debt to Norma Desmond and to those who still know how to descend a staircase with an outstretched arm on the banister, prompting those in attendance to take off their hat. I have known Pierino for many years, less in person, more through the words and the verbal accounts of Fellini, which almost never coincided with those of Tosi, yet traced a portrait with indelible colours. There is also a vague suggestion of witchcraft, from the moment in which the man ceased to change, neither from within nor from without. No sign of ageing, of the passing of time, preserved in a bubble of glass. Immutable, this is how Pierino Tosi appears to me, though he has no need of these compliments, neither does he fish for them, with always a foot placed on that shadowy line beyond which it is so easy to vanish, to fade away. Our mutual long-term acquaintance with Fellini draws us inevitably back to that climate. -

Introduction 1 Sounding Fascism in Cinema
Notes Introduction 1. For an extensive analysis on the subject, the article “Music as Torture / Music as Weapon” in the Transcultural Music Review by Cusick traces the history of the research, and the use of sound (musical and non), for war; an extensive quote from her work demonstrates power’s appropriation of the sheer power of sound: “Acoustic weapons” have been in development by Department of Defense contractors since at least the 1997 creation of the Joint Non- Lethal Weapons Task Force, accounting for 1/3 of the Task Force’s budget in 1998–99. The earliest contract I know to have been let for such a weapon was on November 18, 1998, authorizing now- defunct Synetics Corporation to produce a tightly focused beam of infrasound—that is, vibration waves slower than 100 vps [vibrations per second]—meant to produce effects that range from “disabling or lethal.” In 1999, Maxwell Technologies patented a Hyper-Sonic Sound System, another “highly directional device . designed to control hostile crowds or disable hostage takers.” The same year Primex Physics International patented both the “Acoustic Blaster,” which produced “repetitive impulse waveforms” of 165dB, direct- able at a distance of 50 feet, for “antipersonnel applications,” and the Sequential Arc Discharge Acoustic Generator, which produces “high intensity impulsive sound waves by purely electrical means.” 1 Sounding Fascism in Cinema 1. Eds. ·ress, Bazin on Early Fellini: Three Original Reviews Translated and edited by Bert Cardullo md The Profound Originality of I Vitelloni ge, LA: Without question, few films in the history of cinema have captured their era and exercised their influence more subtly than I ~ht in the Vitelloni (1953). Chaplin's films operated through the miraculously s, 1960. universal character of the Tramp. Films like The Threepenny Opera (1931) owe their audience, and the mark they have left on an entire • e generation, in part to the particularly successful marriage of music and cinema. By contrast, nothing in I Vitelloni seemed capable of impressing itself on the viewer's memory: no famous actors; not even, as in La Strada (1954), a poetically original and picturesque character around which the film is built; no story, or almost none. -
Redeeming Realism: Alternate Historicities in Spanish Literature and Film
REDEEMING REALISM: ALTERNATE HISTORICITIES IN SPANISH LITERATURE AND FILM by Diógenes Costa Currás A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Romance Languages and Literatures: Spanish) in The University of Michigan 2014 Doctoral Committee: Professor Cristina Moreiras-Menor, Chair Assistant Professor Eric Calderwood Associate Professor Giorgio Bertellini Professor Juli A. Highfill To Ela, my wife, and my son, Cem, for being there and helping me through. ii Acknowledgements I could not have gotten this far, or even embarked on this journey, without the friendship and support of many people. First, I would like to thank the members of my doctoral committee. Their trust and support throughout the writing process has eased the struggle with the blank page. Thank you, Cristina Moreiras-Menor, for being such an exceptional adviser and mentor and being always there—through time and space, nudging me in the right direction, going above and beyond the expected. I can simply not express in words my gratitude for inspiring me to be the scholar I am. Giorgio Bertellini, thank you for the openness and collegiality with which you embarked onto this project, to help me wade the murky waters of Neorealism in Spain, and to hearten my fondness for the archive. Thanks also to Juli Highfill for the sharpness of her feedback, and her relentless tachado, removing from my writing the unnecessary, and to Eric Calderwood, for his keen contributions, and his valuable insights into my writings. I have been very fortunate to share the last few years with my friends and colleagues at the University of Michigan, who have become part of my life, and my extended family in the US. -
