Anything But Average October 2008 VOL 26 EDITION 333 Official Publication of the P76 Owners Club of Victoria Inc. Editorial I can’t believe how quickly this year is passing by. There’s only about 10 weeks until Christmas and (all going well) 10 weeks until David and I will be visited by the stork. It’s all going really well for me so far - not too many complaints. We went to an ante- natal class recently which was really interesting. Next week we’re off to Queensland to visit my uncles farm in Miles. He’s a mad Jeep enthusiast and I’m sure we will have plenty of stories and photos to bring back. David and I held the annual Bathurst BBQ last weekend. I say BBQ, but this year we had a spit roast which went really well, although there was a very smoky start! It was a beautiful spring day which meant we could enjoy the race outside and take in a few rays. Overall it was a really great day but a real shame as not one P76 club member attended this year. Though we don’t usually get many members attending, in the past there have been enough to make it worthwhile to continue holding it as a club event. Unfortunately, I think this will be the last. The other event we attended this month was P’s on Tour (in Gippsland). John did a really great job organising this event, especially given the short notice and we had a fantastic time. Though it was disappointing that none of our members joined us for the drive to Maffra. Gippsland really is beautiful at this time of year and John’s intimate knowledge of the area allowed us to see it first hand. I was really impressed with the Gippsland Vehicle Collection. David and I haven’t been there before and it is a well presented collection. I must say though, the car-bit sculpture of the dogs really took my fancy, especially little Leyland (right). On Sunday we went to the 4 th Annual Cora Lynn Country Car Show which was fantastic! One of the best car displays we’ve seen in a long time. I think David’s favourite thing there was Morris “J” van but I really enjoyed seeing all of the vintage caravans parked around the edge of the oval! Thanks again to the contributors this month. Keep all that great material coming. It’s nice to be able to produce a magazine that I know will be of interest to our members. This months mag sees another installment of Phil’s novella, Cars I have owned. There’s also a great article from Bob Hutcheon on how to stop your P from rusting away. The next edition of Anything But Average will be a bumper November-December issue with plenty of photos from the Concourse. Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t hit your mail box until early December. Till next month, Odds ‘n’ Sods Rachel The most recent edition of The Mini Experience (Issue 16, October - December 2008) features the second part of an article entitled Sheet Steel to Please send all magazine contributions, Automobiles, BMC-Leyland in Australia. Part 2 - including advertisements, to the editor: 91 Stockdale Av, Bentleigh East, 3165 or The Leyland Years is a great read! Cars will be on display from 10am to 3pm with judging from 10:30am. Even if your car isn’t concourse condition, it’s a great excuse to take it out for the day and mingle with other P-nuts. Please note, the club will not be bringing parts to sell this year but if there is anything you wish to purchase from club stock, please contact Marcus and he will organise it. A great option for our country members. See you ALL there!!! VACC Cars of the World Sunday November 23 This event will be held at the Morning Star Estate on the Mornington Peninsula. It is organised by Retina Australia Victoria to raise funds for fighting blindness. The event features a Show ‘n Shine, Concours d’Elegance, entertainment, trade and food stalls. Please visit www.carsoftheworld.com.au for entry forms and prices. 2008 P76 Club Committee Christmas Function Sunday December 7 This year, the committee has decided to hold an informal Christmas function at the South Oakleigh Club. We have some tables booked from 12pm in the Bistro. After lunch, we plan to retire to the billiards room for a few drinks and a few games. All are welcome!! Come for lunch, stay for pool or just drop by for a drink and a chat. We’d love to see you there! Please advise David on 0409 675 648 if you will be having lunch so we can reserve enough tables. Past Events Bathurst BBQ A bit of a tradition in the Walker household, this year was no exception. Though there wasn’t anyone from the P-community, the great race was watched on the big screen by the boys while the girls took in a bit of sunshine!! We moved away from the usual sausages in bread this year and David decided we would have a spit roast for a change - not bad but way too much left over!! We’ve been eating roast beef all week and there’s still plenty in the freezer. P’s on Tour (In Gippsland) Though the P’s were a scarce, this was a really great weekend! We started bright and early Saturday morning at Marcus’s place for a committee meeting and BBQ. A huge thank you to Kaye for her hospitality! After a fast committee meeting we jumped into the cars and headed to Labertouche to meet up with other P’s. Unfortunately, we arrived at Labertouche to discover there weren’t any other members joining us for the weekend. So we hit the highway. A short trip to Yaragon to pick up some lunch (for those that were still hungry) and then followed John through the back roads to the new Haunted Hills Hill Climb Track. What a fantastic venue!! There were a group of cars waiting for the medic to arrive so they could get the day underway. John used his incredible charm to talk the organisers into allowing the P’s to do a fast lap. What an experience!! It really wet our appetites and hopefully we can organise a club event back there sometime soon where we can really test out the cars!! After the P lap of honour, we watched a couple of warm up laps and then jumped back in the cars to continue on to Maffra. We spent an hour or so looking through the Gippsland Vehicle collection. The current theme is American vehicles and there are a lot of great cars there - plenty of drool from the boys. The next display, starting in December, will be Japanese cars. From Maffra we headed to the rally track at Boisdale. What fun it must be to roar through the dirt like that! Unfortunately, I think we like our P’s too much to do that. As one of the guys said, you have to drive like you hate the car. But still, good fun to watch. It would have been great to hang around as they were going to continue into the night, rallying under lights. But it was time to head back to Warragul. Only a couple of us stayed in Warragul so we decided to head out for dinner. Who would have thought Warragul would be so busy… the first two places we tried were booked out and we ended up eating in a beautiful little restaurant. Lovely food! Sunday morning we rose bright and early (very difficult considering we lost an hour due to daylight savings!) and headed to Cora Lynn for the Last of the Chrome Bumpers.
