I Quests for Healing and Identity in the Fiction and Films of John Sayles A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Clare Elizabeth Peacock II Abstract Quests for Healing and Identity in the Fiction and Films of John Sayles John Sayles, writer and independent filmmaker, is, first and foremost a storyteller. The "stories" in his fiction and films tell of individuals trying to come to terms with personal and/or political issues and often lead their protagonists on journeys or quests in search of healing and identity. These quests frequently involve characters returning to places either from the past, or to the source of the trauma in order to understand and deal with the present. This thesis examines this particular aspect of the fiction and films of John Sayles. III Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Dr Brian McDonnell for guiding me through this journey. His patience, assistance and sense of humour have been greatly appreciated. I owe thanks also to Dr Chris Watson for his invaluable assistance and guidance in the early stages of this work. Finally, to my husband Grant and my daughters Mia and Chloe, I owe a debt of gratitude for supporting me and encouraging me throughout.

  • John Sayles and Maggie Renzi Have Been Creative Partners, in Their Life and in Their Art, Since the Early '70S
This article was originally posted on the DVDwolf.com website. http://www.dvdwolf.com/templates/dsp_bio.php?u_peopleid=49326 John Sayles and Maggie Renzi have been creative partners, in their life and in their art, since the early '70s. They met as students at Williams College in Massachusetts. John was a member of the class of 1972 and Maggie was member of the class of 1973. In the years immediately after graduation, Maggie worked as a bookstore clerk, a pediatric receptionist, a substitute teacher, a casting agent and a talent agent, while John took jobs like nursing home orderly and meat packer. In the late '70s they moved to California for a few years. John worked for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, and Maggie worked as a salad chef. In 1979 they released their first film: The Return of the Secaucus Seven. John wrote the screenplay, and directed and edited the film. He also played the supporting role of "Howie," a townie who has three kids before his 30th birthday. Maggie starred as "Kate," the high school English teacher who invites all her college buddies up to her New Hampshire home for their annual reunion. She also served as Unit Manager and Assistant Editor. The Return of the Secaucus Seven became an art house and campus hit, winning the Los Angeles Film Critics' Award for Best Screenplay, and launching Sayles and Renzi on their way as independent filmmakers. Beginning with their second film, Lianna, Maggie assumed the role of Producer. While she continued to act, her producing responsibilities grew on each subsequent film, and she finally decided to focus just on producing after Passion Fish was released in 1992.

  • Faith, Politics, and the Films of John Sayles
PSC 319/CTH 369: Faith, Politics and the Films of John Sayles Levan Room 100 Monday 6-9:15 p.m. Professor Michael L. Budde Department of Catholic Studies Office: 570 SAC [email protected] (773) 325-1974 Office Hours: M 3-6 p.m. and by appointment Course Description: The work of John Sayles, among the best known of American independent filmmakers, has ranged across many important and controversial issues – race, economic exploitation, ethnicity, sexuality and more. While the political significance of his films is often acknowledged, his work is also suffused with religious and spiritual symbols and insights he attributes in part to his Catholic heritage (he once described himself as a “Roman Catholic Atheist”). He has received several Academy Award nominations, and received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 1983. Sayles’ work – and how he does it – also provides insights into the conditions of cultural production and artistic freedom in an era of large-scale corporate culture industries (e.g., Time- Warner, Disney, Fox). Unlike most filmmakers, Sayles works free of studio control and oversight – he provides much of the money for his films through his work as a high-priced “script doctor” for the studios (his uncredited scripts include Apollo 13, Mimic, and many others). Sayles’ better-known films, which he has written and directed, include Eight Men Out, Lone Star, Men With Guns, Matewan, and Passion Fish. This course will explore the interplay of politics, commerce, spirituality and culture in Sayles’ work. We will watch many of Sayles’ films in their entirety, discuss and debate issues raised in them, and use Sayles’ experience as a way to investigate larger questions regarding corporate control of cultural production, the social and political significance of independent storytelling, and the ambiguous location of religion (and Catholicism in particular) in contemporary culture industries.

  • CNN on the Problem with Smaller Films
Can the critics' faves also be money makers? By Todd Leopold CNN (CNN) -- In the post-"Star Wars" era, a major divide has opened between summer blockbusters, often special-effects extravaganzas, and the late-year prestige films. Harvey Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax, is a genius at marketing "prestige" films. So how can a film bridge that divide, becoming a box-office bonanza and a critical favorite? It's not easy, notes former film executive Peter Sealey, with the get-'em-in-get-'em-out mentality that rules among studios and theater owners. Years ago, he recalls, a studio would open a film in a handful of cities and take up to two years to get a film from major markets to international cities to video and syndication. Now, he says, "You open on the same day around the world" on tens of thousands of screens, hoping to foil pirates and debut at No. 1 on the box office list (a key promotional tool). That can leave smaller films scrambling for exposure. The divide worries filmmaker John Sayles, who's concerned that many independent films may get lost if they fail to receive studio support or distribution. The market has grown exponentially, he points out, from a handful of independent films when he started in the late '70s to thousands just at the Sundance Film Festival this year. (Sayles and his partner, Maggie Renzi, having had a bad experience with his last film, "Silver City," are distributing his latest film, "Honeydripper," themselves.) "One of our problems is that we have $1 million to sell our movie," he says.

  • John Sayles and Maggie Renzi '73 Visited Williams Early in March, 2012
John Sayles and Maggie Renzi '73 visited Williams early in March, 2012. While there, they showed their latest film, Amigo, at Images cinema on Spring St., and John read from his new novel, A Moment in the Sun. President Adam Falk's introduction of John was glowing and personal, and follows below: On behalf of our program in American Studies, I’m thrilled to introduce John Sayles, who will present his novel A Moment in the Sun and his film Amigo. These works suggest important new directions in American Studies. As we work towards highlighting and advancing our teaching in this field, and in Asian-American studies as well, we’re actively looking at examples of work that builds on the civil rights legacies and social justice work upon which the field was founded. We’re very excited to have this chance to encounter Sayles’ works, which are at the forefront of transnational thinking in this important discipline, and which can help us reflect on the effects of U.S. empire, both historically and in the present. Sayles’ practice is not only at the cutting edge of this thinking, it’s also deeply grounded in another tradition valued by American Studies: the tradition of the public intellectual. Tonight’s event is sponsored by American Studies, with additional support from the departments of English, Art, and Political Science, our programs in Latino Studies, Asian Studies, and International Studies, and by the lecture committee. We’re especially grateful to Sandra Thomas and Images Cinema for hosting and helping to organize this evening.

“I’D SELL MY SOUL AND ALL MY TRAVELLING SHOES TO BELONG SOME PLACE”: PASSION FISH (JOHN SAYLES, 1992) IN ITS CONTEXTS “I’d Sell My Soul and All My Travelling Shoes to Belong Some Place”: Passion Fish (John Sayles, 1992) en contexto Juan A. Tarancón* Universidad de Zaragoza Abstract The election of Ronald Reagan as President of the United States in 1980 marked the beginning of a period of conflicting discourses on gender issues. Reagan had come to power advocating traditional values and a more frugal government but, upon his arrival at the White House, he adopted the moral agenda of the Christian Right while making ostentation, greed and the pursuit of wealth the most salient traits of his presidency. It seems that during the 1980s discourses swung between the superwoman archetype and the assault on women’s rights; between the deification of money-making, good looks and hedonism on one hand and a virulent reaction against women’s legal achievements on the other. However, as the decade wore on, the work of a large number of writers, filmmakers and plastic artists revealed the need to come to terms with the contradictory discourses women were being exposed to. Among these was a new generation of women writers like Dorothy Allison, Bobbie Ann Mason or Barbara Kingsolver, who offered in-depth analysis of the challenges faced by women in Reagan’s society by turning their eyes to small-town USA. Likewise, in the field of cinema, Reaganesque products like Dynasty (1981-1989) or Fatal Attraction (1987) shared US screens with a growing number of productions that rested on a new look at the rural heritage of the country and that brought to the surface a more complex negotiation of the conflict between the ongoing campaign for women’s rights and the * Departamento de Filología Inglesa y Alemana.
