Voice it! As a result of the feedback we received on our ‘Anti Bullying’ Survey last year, we have launched two new systems designed to make it easier for pupils to log their concerns about Bullying, Anti Social Behaviour or any other concerns about pupils or behaviour in and around the college. The first system is accessed through the school website, where pupils can email the pastoral team (either anonymously or they can provide their name). You can find this by looking at the pupil pages in the ‘Care, Guidance and Support’ section of the website. The email is checked on a daily basis and then steps are taken to deal with the issues highlighted. The second, similar, system is ran through the ‘Voice it’ boxes, which are located outside of the Pastoral Office and in the library. Pupils can fill in a form, available in the library, or the front of reception, (some tutors also have forms available in their tutor rooms) and then place it in the box. Again, they can be anonymous or they can give their name.

So far the systems are proving successful. We have found that it has removed the barrier for some pupils, the hardest step can often be telling someone what is wrong, this is much easier to do and much less daunting when it doesn’t have to be face to face!

Please keep using the system and keeping us informed. If we are aware we can act, if we don’t know about the issue upsetting you then we can’t possibly help!

October 2012 Bulletin 5 Health & Safety - Medical Matters Medication ALL pupils requiring to take medication whilst in school should have a medicines form signed by their parent / carer. The form will then be stored safely along with the medication in the ‘First Aid’ room. In the interests of Health and Safety, please do not send any medications into school without an up-to-date form.

We regret that we are unable to administer ANY medication that is not consented to, nor are we able to supply Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Medicines forms are available at the school reception and on the Brockington website www.brockington.leics.sch.uk (Documents) Completed forms should be handed in at reception.

I n h a l e r s Remember - ALL pupils who use inhalers should carry them with them at ALL TIMES, they should be LABELLED with their, name and form group (in-case lost). Seven inhalers have been disposed of already this term because the owner could not be identified! Please ensure that the school is informed that your child needs an inhaler in school in case of emergency! If required a spare inhaler can be kept in the medical room. Top Medical Tips 1. Please do not bring hairsprays and spray deodorants into school as these can be a trigger for asthma. 2. In the event of a serious injury, accident or illness, please consult medical advice before returning your child to school. Unfortunately the school First Aiders are not equipped to deal with these situations. 3. Finally ... always make sure the school has up-to-date emergency contact numbers – contact Mrs Jacquie Barnes in the main school office to inform us of any updates or changes.

Green Flag Award

Brockington College has received its third Green Flag in June 2012. Eco- Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

We believe that Brockington College is the only secondary school in that has been successful in receiving all three green Flag Awards after almost 10 years of hard work and dedication to environmental studies both by pupils and staff.

Our next aim is to become an Eco-School Ambassador School which is an inspirational flagship school of the Eco-Schools programme that has completed in-depth work on all nine Eco-Schools topics and ensured sustainability is embedded into the curriculum.

As an Eco-School we would have successfully delivered change in the culture of the school. An Eco-Schools Ambassador School will be able to demonstrate successful pupil and community interaction and will be supporting and sharing information and advice with other schools and Eco -Communities (Eco-Homes and Eco-Schools).

October 2012 Bulletin 7 Drama and Music News

Harvest Festival 2012 On Friday 19th October all Year 7 pupils and their tutors went to church to celebrate Harvest Festival. The service was lead in readings and prayer by Year 7 pupils – James Mackinder 7T, Madeleine English 7T, Hannah Jones 7N, Emma Holt 7N and Aimee Dawson 7I. We also had a special performance by Sofia Vassallo 8K and Hannah Jones 7N singing ‘Fields of Gold’ by Eva Cassidy. This was beautiful and caused the whole congregation to burst into applause at the end. The singing by the congregation was also fantastic. Well done to everyone who took part in any way, we certainly rocked Harvest Festival this year.

Musical Instrument Lessons Here at Brockington College, we recognise the importance that learning to play a musical instrument can have on a young adult. It can help to promote a sense of self-discipline, self-esteem and enhance self-expression/creativity. We, therefore, encourage as many pupils as possible to start and learn a musical instrument.

Due to the Leicester-shire Arts in Education no longer being able to provide lessons for us, our instrumental lessons will be provided by a team of fabulous private instrumental teachers for the year 2012-2013, and all teachers have options for individual and group lessons to make finding the right type of lesson for your child easier. All teachers have previously worked for the Leicester-Shire Music Service and, as part of the new structure of instrumental teaching, they have all been added to the County Council Associated Teachers Register.

If you are interested in booking lessons for your child then please contact the teacher of the instrument you are interested in, as listed below. They will then send out their information and contracts in order to start lessons with them. No lessons will be booked through the school.

If you have any questions, please contact me at the school on 0116 286 3722 or via email [email protected]

The training will be based on 6 key principles; 1. Enjoyment 2. Co-operation 3. Organisation 4. Safety 5. Communication 6. Responsibility
