Lynn: Preserving the White Man’s Republic: The Democratic Party and the Transformation of American Conservatism, 1847-1860 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives. With the policy of “popular sovereignty,” for instance, Democrats left slavery’s expansion to territorial settlers’ democratic decision-making. -
For All the People
Praise for For All the People John Curl has been around the block when it comes to knowing work- ers’ cooperatives. He has been a worker owner. He has argued theory and practice, inside the firms where his labor counts for something more than token control and within the determined, but still small uni- verse where labor rents capital, using it as it sees fit and profitable. So his book, For All the People: The Hidden History of Cooperation, Cooperative Movements, and Communalism in America, reached expectant hands, and an open mind when it arrived in Asheville, NC. Am I disappointed? No, not in the least. Curl blends the three strands of his historical narrative with aplomb, he has, after all, been researching, writing, revising, and editing the text for a spell. Further, I am certain he has been responding to editors and publishers asking this or that. He may have tired, but he did not give up, much inspired, I am certain, by the determination of the women and men he brings to life. Each of his subtitles could have been a book, and has been written about by authors with as many points of ideological view as their titles. Curl sticks pretty close to the narrative line written by worker own- ers, no matter if they came to work every day with a socialist, laborist, anti-Marxist grudge or not. Often in the past, as with today’s worker owners, their firm fails, a dream to manage capital kaput. Yet today, as yesterday, the democratic ideals of hundreds of worker owners support vibrantly profitable businesses. -

Summary of 1824 – 1850 Era Jacksonian Democracy (1828-1836) 1824 – the “corrupt bargain” election (JQ Adams & Clay “rob” Jackson ???) Jackson represents the “common man”. Jackson increases the suffrage, so the “common man” can vote = Jacksonian Democracy. De Tocqueville, “Democracy in America”. Jackson uses the veto and establishes Presidential authority over Congress. Jackson also thumbs his nose at the Judiciary – he defies the Supreme Court by Indian Removal Act, 1830 (Cherokees – Worcester .v. Georgia), Trail of Tears results. Jackson fights a running battle with Henry Clay and his American System. Whigs (Clay & Webster) .v. Democrats (Jackson & Van Buren) – 2 party system becomes established. Jackson stands for “small govt”, but NOT for nullification (remember, Jackson is President, and nullification or secession reduces the power of the feds. John C. Calhoun is big in this period, as South-North disputes blow up over slavery, tariffs, BUS, federally funded internal improvements. Remember the Tariff of Abominations (1828 – is slavery the real issue ?), Calhoun’s “concurrent majority” idea, SC nullifies the tariff, Jackson responds with the Force Bill (1833), SC backs down. Civil War is averted, for a while, but would it have been better to have sorted the issue out in 1833 ? Webster – Hayne Debate, 1830 (Senate, Webster makes stirring speech about the union being “one and inseperable” – again, it’s the nullification / secession issue). Jackson fights Nicholas Biddle to destroy the BUS. Jackson declares the US “neutral”, but assists Texas break free from Mexico (1836) Slavery Issue Getting very big. Colonization to Liberia, 1817 Missouri Compromise (yes, 1820, earlier, but still …) Abolitionists getting hot under the collar (Wm Lloyd Garrison, 1831, The Liberator) States rights = right to have slaves Therefore the whole nullification / secession thing is really about slavery. -

How did Jackson’s policies affect the political, economic, and social life of the nation? How did social and economic life change as the United States began to move from an agrarian to an industrial society? ACTIVITY FRONT BACK Andrew Jackson Facts *the first person from the American West to be elected President *his presidency was the “turning point” in the progress of American democracy. Presidency of Andrew Jackson In 1824, General Andrew Jackson, the hero of the War of 1812, won the popular vote, but fell short of enough votes in the Electoral College to win the election. The winner was decided by the House of Representatives, which selected John Quincy Adams (son of President John Adams) as President. John Quincy Adams Presidency of Andrew Jackson John Quincy Adams appointed Henry Clay as his Secretary of the State. Andrew Jackson accused Adams and Clay of making a “corrupt bargain.” He accused them of “stealing the election.” The Democratic-Republicans split between the supporters of Jackson and called themselves “Democrats” and his opponents called themselves “Whigs.” Political Parties Started with Hamilton’s Economic Plan. Supporters were Federalists. Those opposed were Democratic Republicans. After his defeat in the election of 1824, Jackson and his supporters spent the next four years campaigning for presidency. -

For the entire previous day, people had poured into Washington, D.C., to see their new president, Andrew Jackson, sworn in. By ten in the morning of the inauguration, the streets were jammed. Up to this point, presidential inaugurations had been quiet affairs. Now, according to Margaret Bayard Smith, the wife of a Maryland senator and a leading member of the capital’s gentry, the streets were jammed with fancy carriages and farmer’s carts, “filled with women and children, some in finery and some in rags.” After the new president swore his oath and gave his speech, a long procession of “country men, farmers, gentlemen, . boys, women and children, black and white” followed him to the White House and descended upon the presidential reception. -

“The Dark Horse” Introduction James Polk is known as the first dark horse candidate for the US presidency. Though it is a stretch to call a former seven term US congressman, Speaker of the House, and governor unknown, many people were surprised by his nomination. Political campaigns were a lot different when Polk was alive. As a dark horse candidate, James Polk and the Democrats had to come up with a way to beat Henry Clay and the Whigs. In this lesson plan, your students will explore what the presidential campaign of 1844 looked and sounded like through the analysis of primary and secondary sources then plan, develop, and execute their own campaign. Objectives A. Research and analyze primary and secondary sources to explore how political conventions worked in 1844. B. Examine primary source excerpts from newspapers, personal accounts, and political documents to identify differences between the two major political parties during James Polk’s candidacy. C. Analyze political cartoons, ribbons, and songs to understand how political messages were spread during the 1844 campaign. D. Demonstrate understanding of the complex issues facing the United States during the 1844 campaign through the creation of political cartoons, songs, and speeches. Today, we have something very different for you and I'll admit, maybe a bit self- serving. About a year and a half ago, I was working at the Cato Institute in libertarianism.org and I received an invitation from IHS's Josh Ammons to deliver one of the speak-for-a-sandwich lectures here at the office. Well now, I mean, not here since I'm still at home but you all know what I mean. Little did I know that Just a month or so later, I would receive another invitation in my inbox to apply for an open position as IHS's academic programs design manager. Loving IHS, as I always have, I applied, interviewed and fortunately, I got the Job. About two weeks later, I aCtually gave my lecture whiCh was a weird sort of makeshift after-the- faCt job talk sinCe I'd already gotten the job. I took the opportunity to give the best overview of my work, my ideas, my inspirations and my perspeCtive that I possibly Could. And now I hand it over to all of you in the hopes that you, number one, will appreciate learning a bit more about your humble host here, which always helps an audience understand the show and its purposes at least a little bit better. And number two, inspiring my new Colleagues toward reviving the lost history of radiCal ClassiCal liberalism and doing the essential work of memory to do the history, the mainstream profession simply refuses to do.
