These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. April 26, 2017 “THE BIGGEST COLORED SHOW ONE EARTH”: HOW MINSTRELSY HAS DEFINED PERFORMANCES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN IDENTITY FROM 19TH CENTURY THEATER TO HIP HOP Laura-Brynn Neuhoff Thesis Adviser: Marcia Chatelain, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This senior thesis seeks to answer the following question: how and why is the word “minstrel” and associated images still used in American rap and hip hop performances? The question was sparked by the title of a 2005 rap album by the group Little Brother: The Minstrel Show. The record is packaged as a television variety show, complete with characters, skits, and references to blackface. This album premiered in the heat of the Minstrel Show Debate when questions of authenticity and representation in rap and hip hop engaged community members. My research is first historical: I analyze images of minstrelsy and reviews of minstrel shows from the 1840s into the twentieth century to understand how the racist images persisted and to unpack the ambiguity of the legacy of black blackface performers. I then analyze the rap scene from the late 2000-2005, when the genre most poignantly faced the identity crisis spurred by those referred to as “minstrel” performers. Having conducted interviews with the two lyricists of Little Brother: Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte, I primarily use Little Brother as my center of research, analyzing their production in conjunction with their spatial position in the hip hop community.

    The Eastside Boyz PRESSKIT 2018 The Eastside Boyz Biography Long before the days Lil Jon called himself the "King of Crunk" he had aspirations of climbing the Hip-Hop ladder with childhood friends Big Sam and Lil Bo, aka The Eastside Boyz. In 1997, they had an incredible following in the Atlanta hip hop scene and Lil Jon came on board as the leading front man. Charismatic and loud mouthed, Lil Jon was the figurehead for this rapidly growing music team. In 1997 they released their first album "Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album" with Mirror Image. The single "Shawty Freak a Lil' Sumthin" reached #36 on the Hot Rap Singles charts as well as #62 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Billboard. The other major single from the album "Who U Wit?" also charted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Billboard at #70. The international success of "Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album" brought with it many outside production opportunities for Lil Jon so it wasn't until 2000 that he returned with another record with The Eastside Boyz, "We Still Crunk". With massive success happening on many levels Lil' Jon started up his own label - BME Recordings, promptly signing himself and The Eastside Boyz to the latest label. The group then went to work on their second album, which became their commercial breakthrough. That same year Lil' Jon and The Eastside Boyz released "We Still Crunk!!" and released it under his own label. Among the tracks on the widely acclaimed record was the hit single "I Like Those Girls," which reached #55 on the R&B chart and squeezing into #3 position on the Hot Rap Tracks chart.
