Greetings from Hampton! We had another great Clinic and All-Star Games in Hampton during July of 2008, which offered a time to visit with our coaching friends from across the state and share in a great week of friendship. Our Association has grown to an enrollment of over 9,000 members for the 2008-2009 year. This number has increased over the past years and continues to grow. This 2009 clinic will be held in Hampton, July 6-10, at the Hampton Convention Center. You will find information of hotel lodging, the game dates and sites in this newsletter. The website will contain all the information on awards, scholarships, Hall of Fame nominations, etc. the website is www.vhscainc.com. You will find information on our scholarships in this issue. Please note we are awarding 5 scholarships this year: two (2) Dr. Frank C. McCue, III Scholarships and three (3) Jimmie Bryan Hall of Fame Nomination – you can find the nomination forms on our website. Yours in sports,

Michael L. Smith

2 VHSCA • WINTER 2009 www.vhscainc.com Fellow Coaches, I am very excited about leading our association for the next two years. Our membership is growing and we are one of the largest coaching associations in this great country. Even now with our economy the way it is I hope that we can continue to grow and work hard for athletics all over our state. Congratulations to all of our fall district, region, and state champions. May we all continue to teach our athletes the importance of sportsmanship and the love of our respective sports. Remember to not only teach the skills and team work but to respect our opponents as well as the officials who call the games.Below I have listed the objectives of the VHSCA and I hope that we all can work together to improve our association: 1) To foster the student athlete in our state; 2) Help maintain the highest possible standards in athletics and in the coaching profession, and to work together for the improvement of athletics in ; 3) To endeavor to improve sports in all phases by aiding the coaches in securing a more thorough understanding of the various sports through improved coaching clinics; 4) To have a representative group of coaches to which athletic problems of general interest may be referred in hopes of creating better relationships between schools; 5) To secure a better understanding of the problems of the coaches and to place at their disposal, sources of information; 6) To promote good fellowship and social contacts among coaches. Team victories in dual, tri, and quad meets can be counted.
