Vo The Migration Period, also called the Barbarian Invasions or German: Völkerwanderung (wandering of the peoples), was a period of human migration that occurred roughly between 300 to 700AD in Europe, marking the transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. These movements were catalysed by profound changes within both the Roman Empire and the so-called lkerwanderung 'barbarian frontier'. Migrating peoples during this period included the Huns, Goths, Vandals, Bulgars, Alans, Suevi, Frisians and Franks, among other Germanic and Slavic tribes. The migration movement may be divided into two phases: The first phase, between 300 and 500AD, put Germanic peoples in control of most areas of the former Western Roman Empire. The first to formally enter Roman territory — as refugees from the Huns — were the Visigoths in 376. Tolerated by the Romans on condition that they defend the Danube frontier, they rebelled, eventually invading Italy and sacking Rome itself in 410AD, before settling in Iberia and founding a kingdom there that endured 300 years. They were followed into Roman territory by the Ostrogoths led by Theodoric the Great, who settled in Italy itself. In Gaul, the Franks, a fusion of western Germanic tribes whose leaders had been strongly aligned with Rome, entered Roman lands more gradually and peacefully during the 5th century, and were generally accepted as rulers by the Romano-Gallic population. Fending off challenges from the Allamanni, Burgundians and Visigoths, the Frankish kingdom became the nucleus of the future states of France and Germany. Meanwhile, Roman Britain was more slowly invaded and settled by Angles and Saxons. This supplement focuses on this first period. The Greuthungi seem to have split up under attack from the Huns. Part joined the Tervingi in entering Roman territory, part remained independent and invaded Italy under Radagaisus, and the larger part became Hunnic subjects from 441 until the break-up of the Hunnic empire. This last part eventually becoming unified as the Ostrogothic nation. Radagaisus army of was mostly Goths, but was also reported to include Rugi, Suevi, Vandals, Burgundians and Alans. After its defeat by Stilicho, 12,000 nobles were conscripted and 10,000 were enslaved. The most famous achievement of the Greuthungi cavalry was the victory of Adrianople in 378 AD, when their cavalry charged into the rear of a Roman army already engaged to its front. This battle is often considered the start of the process which led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Spears and javelins were their main weapons. Goths are described by a contemporary:Unkempt, tarnished and greasy are the linen garments on their lean backs. Their coats of skin. are drawn up high and cannot reach the calf, their knees are bare and their boots of horsehide are held up by a common knot. The Heruls came iron the marshy lands around Lake Maeotis and were renowned for their swift-footed light infantry. Their cavalry were said by Procopius not to have worn metal armour or helmets, but to be protected only by shields and thick jackets. They charged furiously hurling javelins, on one occasion at a different enemy unit to that they were ordered to attack. The slaves that accompanied them were not allowed shields until they had proved themselves brave. He also comments that for a Herul not to give himself to treachery and drunkenness is so unusual as to merit abundant praise. Herul raiding boats in 455 had crews of 55 men. They are associated with the Przeworsk culture and were possibly the same people as the Lugii. Expanding into Dacia during the Marcomannic Wars and to Pannonia during the Crisis of the Third Century, the Vandals were confined to Pannonia by the Goths around 330 AD, where they received permission to settle by Constantine the Great. Around 400 the Vandals were pushed westwards again, this time by the Huns, crossing the Rhine into Gaul along with other tribes in 406. They continued on across the Pyrenees into Spain in 409. Although the Suevi and a faction of the Alans invaded Spain at the same time, they were not only not allied with these but fought them incessantly (as did the Silings and Asdings each other). The Siling and Alan states in Spain were destroyed in 416 by the Visigoths on behalf of Rome, and the Asdings and an Alan remnant finally crossed to Africa in 428 AD, taking Carthage by treachery in 439 AD. They joined the Heruls in raiding by boat, notably in 267. Unlike the Greuthingi, most were still infantry and many horses and weapons were confiscated when they fled the Huns into East Roman territory in 376. They are described as forming up on a hill with the intention of charging down it and fighting with javelins and swords in dense formation. In one battle a Roman line was penetrated by a band throwing massive fire-hardened wooden clubs. They won a crushing victory at Adrianople in 378, but after the death of their long in 380 leaving no credible successor, were settled by treatyand provided recruits for Roman regular units. Following the decisive Gothic victory at Adrianople, Julius, the magister militum Eastern Roman Empire, organized a widescale massacre of Goths in Asia Minor, Syria and other parts of the Roman East.Fearing rebellion, Julian lured the Goths into the confines of urban streets from which they could not escape and massacred soldiers and civilians alike. The Goths remained divided – as Visigoths and Ostrogoths – during the 5th Century. These two tribes were among the Germanic peoples who clashed with the late Roman Empire during the Völkerwanderung
