The , also called the Invasions or German: Völkerwanderung (wandering of the peoples), was a period of human migration that occurred roughly between 300 to 700AD in Europe, marking the transition from to the Early . These movements were catalysed by profound changes within both the and the so-called lkerwanderung 'barbarian frontier'. Migrating peoples during this period included the , , , , , Suevi, Frisians and , among other Germanic and Slavic tribes.

The migration movement may be divided into two phases: The first phase, between 300 and 500AD, put in control of most areas of the former . The first to formally enter Roman territory — as refugees from the Huns — were the in 376. Tolerated by the Romans on condition that they defend the frontier, they rebelled, eventually invading and sacking Rome itself in 410AD, before settling in Iberia and founding a kingdom there that endured 300 years. They were followed into Roman territory by the led by the Great, who settled in Italy itself. In Gaul, the Franks, a fusion of western Germanic tribes whose leaders had been strongly aligned with Rome, entered Roman lands more gradually and peacefully during the , and were generally accepted as rulers by the Romano-Gallic population. Fending off challenges from the Allamanni, and Visigoths, the Frankish kingdom became the nucleus of the future states of and Germany. Meanwhile, Roman Britain was more slowly invaded and settled by and .

This supplement focuses on this first period.

Around 400 the Vandals were pushed westwards again, this time by the Huns, crossing the Rhine into Gaul along with other tribes in 406. They continued on across the Pyrenees into Spain in 409. Although the Suevi and a faction of the Alans invaded Spain at the same time, they were not only not allied with these but fought them incessantly (as did the Silings and Asdings each other). The Siling and Alan states in Spain were destroyed in 416 by the Visigoths on behalf of Rome, and the Asdings and an Alan remnant finally crossed to Africa in 428 AD, taking Carthage by treachery in 439 AD.

The two most prominent of these tribes were the Ripuarians and the Salians who led the others. The Franks appear in sources for the first time in 257 CE, mentioned among the enemies of Rome in northern Gaul. They were a threat not only by land but also on the sea. Late in the 3rd century CE, some of the Franks joined the Saxons in the southern part of the North Sea and the English Channel, turning into raiders, preying on shipping lanes, and also raiding the coast of Britain and Gaul. Under the rule of Emperor Maximianus, the Romans signed a treaty with the Franks in 287AD; as part of the agreement, several Franks became enlisted in the Roman army

In 451AD, the Hun invaded Gaul, and the Franks joined the Romans and the Visigoths to resist the invasion. Attila's conquest was halted in June 451AD at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, and he retreated from Gaul. The Franks continued to provide military support to Rome to fight against imperial enemies, including the Visigoths in 463 CE and the Saxons at Angiers in 469 CE.

The Franks were the most successful of the tribes attacking the Romans, absorbing most of Alamannic Gaul in 506. The Frankish warriors used the francisca throwing that gives them their name, and a heavy throwing spear called the angon. According to Ammianus they "enter eagerly into wars", are stronger and taller than Roman soldiers, of huge size, savage and uncontrollable and exhibit extreme resolution. He also describes the elite warriors as a fiery band of nobles among whom even the fought, fighting in frenzied rage and leaving themselves unguarded and striving to lavish their lives tor victory.

Notes Suevi was a collective term for the German tribes of the upper Danube that invaded across the frozen Rhine in 406, crossed into Spain in 409 at the same time as the Vandals and some of the Alans and set up a kingdom in its north-west corner. This was absorbed by the Visigoths in 584. The rest of the Alamanni went no further than Gaul and were absorbed by the Franks in 506. This list covers those tribes 250 AD to 586 AD

These tribes had abandoned the earlier German light frames for heavier throwing Weapons - bebrae - that could ruin a shield or penetrate armour. However,Alamannic graves often have only bow plus axe or knife and in 354 their archers stopped a Roman river crossing. Alamanni are described as having dyed their hair red, according to their custom.

In the 4th century, they were incorporated into the Hunnic Empire. Under their leader , the Gepids united with other Germanic tribes and defeated the Huns at the Battle of Nedao. After the battle the Hunnic Empire disintegrated and the Gepids became the dominant power in the eastern regions of the Carpathian Basin.

The Gepids joined a coalition formed by the Suevi, , formed against the Ostrogoths. The Ostrogoths, however, routed the united forces of their enemies in the Battle of Bolia in 469. After the Ostrogoths left Pannonia in 473, the Gepids captured (now Sremska Mitrovica in ). Thraustila, of the Gepids, tried to hinder the Ostrogoths from crossing the river Vuka during Theoderic the Great's campaign against Italy, but the Ostrogoths routed Thraustila's army. Theoderic the Great dispatched one comes Pitzia to launch a campaign against the Gepids who either tried to capture Sirmium or wanted to get rid of Theoderic's suzerainty in 504. Comes Pitzia expelled the Gepid troops from Sirmium without much resistance. In an attempt to take advantage of the death of Theoderic the Great in 526, the Gepids invaded the region of Sirmium in 528 or 530, but were defeated.

The Gepids reached the zenith of their power after 537, settling in the rich area around . For a short time, the city of Sirmiumwas the centre of the Gepid State. Limigantes Limigantes Cavalry Cavalry Skirmisher Average Experienced Protected Short Spear Javelin - - 4 12 4,6 Notes In the late 3rd century, the Burgundians appear on the east bank of the Rhine, confronting . Zosimus reports them being defeated by the emperor Probus in 278 in Gaul. At this time, they were led by a Vandal king. A few years later, Claudius Mamertinus mentions them along with the Alamanni, a Suebic people. These two peoples had moved into the Agri Decumates on the eastern side of the Rhine, an area today referred to still as Swabia, at times attacking Roman Gaul together and sometimes fighting each other. He also mentions that the Goths had previously defeated the Burgundians.

Ammianus Marcellinus, claimed that the Burgundians were descended from Romans. The Roman sources do not speak of any specific migration from Poland by the Burgundians (although other Vandalic peoples are more clearly mentioned as having moved west in this period)

In 370, the Emperor enlisted the aid of the Burgundians in his war against the Alamanni. Approximately four decades later, the Burgundians appear again. Following Stilicho's withdrawal of troops to fight Alaric I the Visigoth in AD 406-408, the northern tribes crossed the Rhine and entered the Empire in the Völkerwanderung, or Germanic migrations. Among them were the Alans, Vandals, the Suevi, and possibly some Burgundians. Some Burgundians migrated westwards and settled as in the Roman province of Secunda along the Middle Rhine. Other Burgundians stayed in their previous homeland in Oder- interfluvial and formed a contingent in Attila's Hunnic army.

The Burgundi differed from the Franks and Suevi in using light javelins instead of francisca, angon or bebrae. Crushed by the Huns at Roman instigation in 436 AD, they were settled in eastern Gaul as foederati. Their kingdom was conquered and absorbed by the Franks in 534.

The Limigantes also used javelins and fought in close wedge, but their cavalry were light skirmishers. They were subjects of the Sarmatians until they rebelled in 334 and were destroyed by Constantine I in 359.

From the 3rd through the 5th centuries Frisia suffered marine transgressions that made most of the land uninhabitable, aggravated by a change to a cooler and wetter climate. Whatever population may have remained dropped dramatically, and the coastal lands remained largely unpopulated for the next two centuries. When conditions improved, Frisia received an influx of new settlers, mostly Angles and Saxons. These people would eventually be referred to as 'Frisians', though they were not necessarily descended from the ancient Frisia.

By the end of the 6th century, Frisian territory had expanded westward to the North Sea coast and, in the 7th century, southward down to Dorestad. This farthest extent of Frisian territory is sometimes referred to as Frisia Magna. Early Frisia was ruled by a High King, with the earliest reference to a 'Frisian King' being dated 678.

This list covers Frisians, Bavarians and Thuringians until their absorption by the Franks, the Thuringian and Saxon revolt of 555

Noble warriors thought themselves much superior to their followers, initially used a proportion of heavy throwing weapons, and were increasingly likely as time went on to have helmets and mail.
