As we went to press the news came through that High Legh Tennis Club teams have won the Cheshire County Championship for the under 9s, under 10s and the under 8s drew in their final. So, some great work is being done for the future of British Tennis – well done to the coaches, children and all the parents who support them.

All High Legh residents will have an opportunity to do some thinking and planning for the future during the 3 day Exhibition and consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan that is taking place in our Village Hall on Wednesday 17th and Sat/Sun 21st and 22nd April. Do take the opportunity to go there and then provide the Neighbourhood Plan team with your written feedback. You can also enjoy a delightful Sunday Tea if you go on the Sunday 22nd April.

Celebrations – as St John’s marks 125 years in their present building, our Primary School celebrates 50 years in their current building and Preschool expects to start year zero when they move into their new premises.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of all voluntary organisations. Our Community Observatory offers opportunities to learn about their fantastic equipment and participate in citizen science. Or maybe you would simply like to get to know your neighbours a bit better – come along to the Coffee and Friendship or help serve cakes and sandwiches at a Sunday Teas session.

Would you like to organise a social event like a Barn Dance, a Talk or an Exhibition? Perhaps you would like to make a video or some web pages to go on the Community website. Give me a call/email and I will put you in touch with people who could help you make it happen.

This quarterly Newsletter is written, published and delivered to High Legh homes, through the voluntary efforts of members of the High Legh Community. It can also be downloaded from www.highlegh.org.uk . It aims to keep residents informed about the breadth of activities that take place within our village. You can get reminders about High Legh activities and event news by emailing [email protected]

If you have information about a local social event or news that may be of interest to High Legh people, and you would like it to go onto that website, or this Newsletter email [email protected] or ring me. Thank you to all contributors, advertisers and distributors.

The deadline for the Summer Newsletter is: Sunday 24th June, 2018

Pre-school are planning to move to their new premises on Pheasant Walk during the early part of the Summer. We were pleased to be able to offer them temporary accommodation and in return they introduced many new people to the wonders of the Village Hall. We had the best party season – ever. We wish them luck at their new premises and, no doubt, they will continue their links with the Village Hall for many years to come. We also continue to make improvements to the Village Hall which over the last three years has seen many changes designed to improve and enhance our facilities. Starting in August, we have arranged for the whole of the Hall to be painted. A team of people have spent many hours looking at paint samples and decorating ideas and have eventually decided on a colour scheme. It will transform the Hall and give it a fresh, new look. In May, this year, the data protection law will change significantly when the EU Directive known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. All organisations will need to record what personal information is held, where it came from and who it is shared with. We have written a policy for the Community Association and, once it is approved by the CA Council will be published on our website. Finally, while the Pre-school have been at the Village Hall we have had difficulty in storing our furniture and I would like to thank all users for their patience and understanding. Should you wish to hire the Village Hall for a party, a social or business event please contact Helen Wright at [email protected] and arrange to have a look at what we have to offer. Special rates are available for High Legh residents and charities. Mike Walker ([email protected]) Co Chair HLCA.

SUNDAY TEAS

High Legh Sunday Teas started on April 1st, Easter Sunday, with the Community Association hosting the first Teas. Local groups and organisations will be hosting teas throughout the summer with the last Teas scheduled for 7th October. They start at 1.00 pm and finish at 4.30 pm so plenty of time for lunch or afternoon tea. Freshly made sandwiches and quiches are on offer and a wide range of home-made fare including sponge cakes, scones, pavlovas, lemon meringue pies, cheese cakes, meringues, trifles and much more so something for everybody. COFFEE & FRIENDSHIP The Coffee and Friendship mornings are free but of course there is a cost involved. High Legh Community Association has funded the event from the start and will continue to do so during 2018 so this means they pay for the hall and the tea and coffee. Jeff Evans from High Legh Community Transport provides transport. We will pay £2 per cake but most of our cakes are donated by a generous and dedicated group of bakers and we also have regular volunteers that set up, serve and clear up.

Of course the Coffee and Friendship mornings wouldn’t be a success without the residents of High Legh who come along to have a chat with neighbours and friends, meet new friends, while partaking of coffee and cake in a happy relaxing atmosphere.

A big thank you to everybody for making the Coffee and Friendship mornings such a success. Dates for the coming months are 26 April, 24 May, 28 June and 26 July, 10.30 to 12 at the Village Hall.

We were delighted when planning permission for our new premises was finally granted on the 5th March. We will soon be able to open at Rosemead on Pheasants Walk. We had almost given up hope on Cheshire East ever making a decision on our application as they missed 3 deadlines, but eventually with support from our Parish Council, our CEC Councillor Olivia Hunter and our MP Ester McVey, it was finally granted. Thank you to all who gave up their time or expertise to ensure High Legh Preschool can continue to offer childcare to those in the village and surrounding areas.

We have started work externally and parking for 10 cars has been completed. There are extensive gardens at Rosemead and these have been cleared and made secure for the children to play in. There are two gardens. We will have a large area to run around and play, and an area to create a nature garden and grow food and plants. Over Easter holidays we will be converting the bathroom into little cubicles for the children and creating a changing area. We will be tiling this area with tiles decorated with the names of High Legh children past, present and future. If you would like to have your child’s time at High Legh Pre-school recorded whilst also helping to secure its future then please email for details of how to take part. Tiles cost £20 with a nominal charge for additional tiles for siblings. There’s not much more to do at Rosemead apart from installation of fire safety equipment. There is a considerable cost to this and we have used a considerable amount of our reserves waiting for the planning process to be completed. In order to ensure we can complete the works we have created a Justgiving crowd funding page to help fund these items. Many thanks to those who have donated so far, we are now half way towards our target with just a few days left to raise the remainder. We thought that if everyone who had attended preschool and enjoyed their time there donated £5 then we would smash our target. If you have not already done so please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rosemead

Page 10 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 11 Our 12th Annual ball at Heyrose golf club was a fantastic evening and we raised approximately £2.5k. Each year we create a ‘masterpiece’ with the children, this year’s piece of art was created by printing with bottle tops and raised £250! Next month on 21st April we will be holding our Spring Trail 2.00pm - 4.00pm at St. Johns. This is a lovely day for all the family following a trail around the village and back to the Church room for refreshments. I’m sure there will be a few clues along the way in the lovely gardens of Rosemead for a sneaky peek before we open. We hope to be open at Rosemead in May. We have to wait for certain paperwork to be completed before we can open. Currently we don’t have a timescale for this, so the date cannot be confirmed. We will keep all interested parties informed. We will open from 8am - 6pm, closing only for a week at Christmas and a week during August, catering for children aged 2-5 years. We will retain our charitable status and therefore we will be able to offer competitive rates to similar settings in the area. If you would like to reserve a place for your child, please email [email protected] to enquire about availability.

©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 11 High Legh Primary School Fantastic opportunities at High Legh Primary School This year we have timetabled key weeks into our school so that children would have even more opportunities to develop skills. For Design Technology in January we had an architect in school designing huge structures with all our children in the hall. Our Reception children learnt about floating and sinking and made fabulous boats. Our week finished with a High Legh Bake Off - we had huge show stopper cakes as well as delicious cookies and cakes. Mrs Price and I had the hard task of judging (what a great way to spend an afternoon) – we couldn’t believe we had over 70 entries. Our brass band took part in the Cheshire East Music Competition, unfortunately we didn’t win. We are very proud of our band and just to prove how amazing they are, they have been selected to play at the Cheshire Show on Wed 20th June at about 1.10pm – please come and be entertained by us if you are at the show on that day. World Book day turned into a whole week of promoting reading. Local author Rachel Lyndsay was in school reading from her Troll books. She did writing workshops with our children, showing how she plans chapters and whole books. Our infant children had Fairy Tale Forest workshops in our woods. This year we designed t-shirts capturing illustrations and quotes from our favourite books. It was great to see so many children reading each other’s t-shirts. We have a new member of staff - Bella the reading dog. She is a sweet Cockapoo who sits by the children whilst they read to her owner. Research shows that a reading dog can help with concentration and motivation. Our biggest problem is that everyone wants to read to her. How proud I am of our children who have selflessly come up with ideas to support others in the local and wider community. I have had children collecting tins for homeless charities and children have made valentine sweet bags to sell with profits going to a charity. At the moment Year 6 children are selling Flumpets in school on behalf of St. Rocco’s. These have all come from the children themselves. Currently they have raised over £300. Our children have helped plant hundreds of snowdrops around the Belfry Estate in High Legh; it is lovely to think our children will be bringing spring smiles to people’s faces every

Page 12 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 13 year when the flowers pop up. If there is anything we can do to support you in High Legh please let us know- we love learning to be active citizens. This year we celebrate 50 years of our school being on Wrenshot Lane since it moved from the Village Hall in 1968. Our big celebration is on Friday 20th April; during the day the children and staff will all be dressed from a different decade and we have invited The Pop Project into play live music across the decades. This will be fantastic as Graham Skelland, who is part of the band, is also one of our ex-head teachers; I am sure he will be able to tell us some great stories about our school. Mrs Topping is ready to make a 1960’s school dinner – obviously fish and chips (as it is Friday) we also have meat pie on the menu and we are finishing with Angel delight or jam roly poly and pink custard. Wow I haven’t had pink custard for about 40 years- I can’t wait. After school we are inviting past families, students, staff and teachers along to take tours of the school and see any changes as well as have all the old photographs and memorabilia out. We will be celebrating with refreshments and cakes. Please do pop along on Friday 20th April at 3.40pm if you have a link to our wonderful school we would love to see you. Please also pass this message on to past alumni. Our school continues to grow- we have 152 pupils currently – however as a small village school our class sizes still remain small with 24 pupils being in our largest class. If you would like to visit our school or would like to offer your support by working with our children please ring 01925 753713. Louise Tottle Head teacher

HIGH LEGH SCHOOL PTA The purpose of the High Legh Primary school PTA charity is two-fold: 1) Fundraising on behalf of the school for the benefit of the children 2) Community Promote and encourage good relationships and sense of community between parents, children and teachers, and with the local High Legh community We now have a new really strong team of PTA members including a new co-chair Rebecca Booth. Rebecca has been involved in our school PTA for a few years now (particularly organising the Apple Picks). We also welcome Emma Roberts who has agreed to take on the new role of New Events Ideas Coordinator. We think Emma will great at helping to identify new events each year to help drive a rotation of events that supports keeping the Events calendar fresh. If you have an idea for a new event, please get in touch! Since September we have raised £4,000 through various events and the generosity of some families through regular giving. We have more events planned for the children to enjoy. In addition, forthcoming events of interest to the High Legh community are Summer ice creams on Friday afternoons in June and July, Ladies day @ Rugby Club Friday 15th June and the School Summer Fair on Friday 13th July. Lastly please ‘save the date’ for the very special HL Primary School 50th Anniversary Ball planned at the Courthouse venue in Knutsford on Saturday 13th October 2018. ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 13 Plato crater region - Mark Holmes

“Once in a blue Moon” is a common enough expression. It refers to having two full Moons in the same calendar month, which is not a common event, as the Moon takes about 29 days to orbit the Earth. In fact there was a “blue” Moon at the end of January. It was also a “super” Moon in that it was at its closest to Earth and so appeared slightly larger. At HLCO we captured an image of the Moon a couple of days before it was full. More recently Mark Holmes took this great image of the Plato crater area. In fact one of our projects is to produce our own lunar map built up from images like this. To increase the use of the observatory and take greater advantage of clear skies, we need 4 or 5 volunteers to operate it and the telescopes. Full training will be provided, so if this is something you would like to get involved with please contact me on 75-5570 or email [email protected] Attendances at our monthly public meetings so far this year have been high. In January William Stewart gave an excellent talk about the size of space and how astronomers measure distances, covering everything for the size of the Earth, the Moon to distant galaxies. In February Dr Rob Crain wowed us with his talk “The cosmos in a computer”. He showed how modelling of the evolution of the cosmos in super computers can now produce simulations that are almost indistinguishable from actual observations. Then in March Brian Feast gave a detailed account of the two great British observatories at Greenwich and at Herstmonceux in Sussex. Coming up - on 12th April Bernard Humphries will be talking about the Chinese FAST radio telescope – at 500 meters in diameter, the largest in the world! On 10th May our good friend, Prof. Ian Morison, will give his talk “It’s about time”. Full details are on our website www.highlegh-communityobservatory.com Don’t forget that the observatory is open on Friday evenings from 8PM if the sky is clear and at other times via our text alert system. Admission is free. The observatory is also open during Abbey Leys Farmers Markets. So do call in and have a look – all welcome. Finally, in the words of the late, great, Stephen Hawking “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet” What better way to do that than at the observatory.

As reported in the last magazine Land Studio have continued working with the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group to take the findings from the 2016 Survey of High Legh residents (see www.hlnp.org) to develop options so that we can get more clarity on your views on: what type of Village Centre could be created, where, and how it could be viably • achieved? the level of desire for limited additional housing in terms of more specific • locations, tenure and size and the benefits that it might bring. all in the context of the majority of people wanting the character of High • Legh to be maintained. In April you will have an envelope delivered with a copy of the questionnaire. Please take time to complete it, preferably online (as this will help us analyse the results more quickly) at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/hlnp2018 by NO LATER THAN SUNDAY MAY 20th. Alternatively, you can complete the hard copy and return it to the Parish Clerk, Doreen Walker, 18 Gleyve, High Legh WA16 6PY. Boxes will also be available at the Village Hall, High Legh School and St John’s Church for you to drop it off. If there are additional members of your household who would like to complete the questionnaire separately they can download a copy at www.hlnp.org or ring 01925 754818. Details will also be on the Parish Council, Community Association and High Legh Neighbourhood Plan websites as well as the High Legh Neighbourhood Plan Facebook page.

Page 16 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 17 To help you before completing the questionnaire please note that there will be an exhibition in the Village Hall with people on hand to answer your questions as follows: • 7.30pm – 9.30pm, Wednesday, 18th April • 1pm – 4.30 pm, Saturday, 21st April • 1pm – 4.30pm, Sunday, 22nd April Everyone over 18 in High Legh will eventually get to vote on the Neighbourhood Plan so it is vital that views from all ages are captured as we seek to plan the future of where we live. Anyone who completes the questionnaire by 20th May will be entered into a Prize Draw. The first three drawn out will receive a £20 M&S or High Legh Garden Centre voucher.

In the meantime, if you want to raise any questions please do not hesitate to contact Doreen Walker, Parish Clerk at [email protected]. Thank you for helping us to create a Neighbourhood Plan for High Legh

©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 19 Road Safety - Parents with push chairs and toddlers have been seen having to move off the pavement into the road to avoid the overgrown areas, which is entirely unacceptable. As we approach spring then please keep any area you are responsible for under control and well off the pavements. CEC were due to cut back the verge on West Lane at the beginning of March but due to the bad weather this has been delayed. Speed sign - A solar powered Speed Limit Reminder sign has been ordered, which can be moved around in the 40 mph zones, on West Lane and the A50. We have ordered a new fingerpost to replace the oneat junction of Swineyard Lane/Heath Lane, which went missing a while ago. Play Area and adjoining footpath - New seats and surfacing have been ordered for the junior swings. We have 3 quotes for resurfacing the footpath between Somerville Close and the Play Area which we hope will be carried out in the Spring/Summer. We are deciding on a new piece of equipment and we will be using money we have been allocated from the development at Copper Beeches to pay for the footpath and equipment. Broadband for outlying areas - The PC have been investigating broadband for the residents of outlying areas of the parish who are unable to receive high speed broadband as they are too far away from the cabinet. While BT Openreach may improve the service to rural areas it is far from certain. We are looking at alternative methods to ensure that you get this essential service, however there would be some costs involved, potentially to set up but also most definitely in subscription, while we cannot determine this exactly we do know it will be cheaper and offer bigger data than currently offered through satellite systems. We have ordered a line of sight survey and feasibility report and should have the results by the end of March. If you live in an area where you can’t get faster broadband, please contact the clerk with your present speed and address. Bus Service - From 3 April Network Warrington have extended their No 47 service to include High Legh and Knutsford. Timetable is on Page 17. This is a one year contract. This will be the only bus servicing High Legh as the Nos 289 and 35 have been withdrawn. The Parish Council will be meeting with CEC in the new financial year. Old Oak - You will have noticed that the Old Oak is back on Broadoak Lane at last. The PC is in the process of getting some railings made by a blacksmith to protect it and an information board made.

Mr Hulton has also planted snowdrops at the corner of Pheasant Walk and North Drive. Thank you to Dave Simpson for repairing the picket fence on the Belfry. Dogs - Sadly we are still getting poo bags left around the lanes and on the Golf Course. There is no such thing as the Dog Poo Fairy! Put your bag in any of the waste bins. Let’s keep our lovely village clean. The warden has been around and put up some more signs. To report a dog fouling complaint call CEC on 03001235011. HS2 - A group of High Legh Ward parish councils has been set up and will be meeting in May with an HS2 route engineer. Policing - PCSO Gary Fulton has left to train as a policeman. We now have Emma Darroch who can be contacted on knutsford.npu@cheshire or 101, or dial 999 in an emergency. Subscribe to our email updates by emailing the clerk. Next Meetings: Monday, 23 April, AGM on 21 May and 16 July - check the web calendar for updates. Meetings start at 7.30pm in the Upstairs Meeting Room. All welcome. JANUARY MEETING - WOMEN OF MANCHESTER Manchester Blue Badge Guide Jean Bailio was the speaker at the January meeting. In the year that marks 100 years since women won the right to vote, it was apposite that Jean should include Manchester women who played a prominent role in this major achievement. Emmeline Pankhurst founder of the British suffragette movement was born in Moss Side. Margaret Downes died in the Waterloo massacre and Hannah Mitchell was another leading light in the fight for women’s rights. Marie Stokes was the first female academic to join the scientific staff at Manchester University. These were just a few influential women with links to Manchester mentioned in this interesting talk. Jean also included present day women of note. FEBRUARY MEETING - BRITISH DIALECTS We were expecting an entertaining evening when Derek Poulson returned for a second visit and he didn’t disappoint. Last year he came to visit on Valentine’s Day with a talk entitled “Love Actually”. This time it was all about British dialects and when it comes to dialects Derek is adept at them all. It was impressive how quickly he could switch from a Merseyside accent to a Tyneside accent and all places in between with French and German thrown in for good measure. His expertise knew no bounds as he covered the British Isles explaining how regional accents developed and how they declined when the children of the nouveau riche were sent to public schools. Derek delivered a flawless performance without any memory aids. MARCH MEETING - MY LIFE IN MUSIC It was a lively evening when Rae Owens came to call. Rae is a string bass player with the Chicago Teddy Bears Society jazz band but this evening his instruments of choice were the guitar and the banjo mandolin. We were soon singing along to familiar songs as Rae cleverly mimicked George Formby; Elvis Presley; Johnny Cash; Cliff Richard and Lonnie Donegan and a little country and western. His presentation was interspersed with funny stories and as an associate of Ken Dodd he knew quite a few! THEATRE VISITS Members who went to see “Guys & Dolls” at the Royal Exchange Theatre described it as spectacular. The trip to the Lowry to see Mathew Bourne’s ballet, “Cinderella” was also a great success .This evocative love story is set in London during the Second World War with a score by Prokoviev. A visit to the Theatre to see “You’ve got a friend” featuring the music of James Taylor & Carole King, has been arranged. CRAFT GROUP - Members have been discussing plans for the Cheshire Show. The group also organised a donation of toiletries for a women’s refuge centre. Everyone was keen to be involved and donated generously. WALKING GROUP - The walkers enjoyed a walk around Peover in March and lunched at the Whipping Stocks. The April plan is a four mile walk around Acton Bridge with lunch at the Leigh Arms. BOOK CLUB - Members have been reading “The Night Manager”. Next month’s choice is “Black Water Lillies”. Literary Lunch 2018 - This will be held on April 19th at Christleton. The speaker is crime fiction author Sarah Ward.

PLASTIC SOUP – Update (National Federation of Women’s Institutes) The NFWI campaign to keep micro-plastic fibres out of our oceans has already attracted national media coverage. Since the resolution was adopted in 2017 members have been raising awareness nationally that fibres shed from synthetic clothing in our wash are the main contributors to micro-plastic contamination of our oceans; they make up 85% of human made material found on our coast line. The NFWI has written to every water company in the UK and to manufacturers of washing machines as well as to the biggest high street retailers to ask what they are doing to tackle the problem. In January, organisations representing textile and detergent manufacturers, sport and outdoor clothing industries throughout Europe, announced they would work together to deal with the problem. In response to letters from WI members, Michael Gove replied that further research had been commissioned to better understand the problem. The NFWI has also responded to a request from the European Commission for views on ways to tackle the problem. MONTHLY MEETINGS The following guest speakers have been arranged:- April 10th Baking Bread, the Great British Bake Off and Me Mitch Poole June 12th Nursery Rhymes Jean Finney July 10th Nine Lives Janet Bradshaw The Resolutions Evening will be held on May 8th

Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in High Legh Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Visitors and newcomers are always welcome. Val Challis 754271

This winter has been a cold one even here in the Cheshire Gap. We haven’t suffered as many have from the “Beast from the East” or the second “mini-east beast”. Nevertheless, the snowdrops, as well as other early spring flowers have struggled against snow and wind. Despite that, I think that the snowdrops have seemed even better than usual around the village – perhaps I have simply noticed them more, perhaps they have lasted longer because of the cold temperatures. Apparently, snowdrops were brought here by Italian monks in the fifteenth century for the celebration of Candlemas – when we remember Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the Temple to give thanks for him. In Russia where the snowdrops regularly have to push up through frozen ground and then a layer of snow, they are also known as “Tears of winter snow”. Apparently they are the only plant that can force its way through frozen ground as their pointed flower tips seek the pale wintry sunshine. In Russia, March 1st is known as Snowdrop Day. A legend says that an Angel came and made the tiny flowers from snowflakes as a gift of hope after he found Eve weeping because she had been expelled from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3, verse 23). Each year on that day, Russian children are encouraged to pick the “Tears of Snow” to give as a gift of hope and thanksgiving after the passing of winter. At St John’s saying “Thank you” for the many blessings that surround us is part of all our worship, as is the message of hope that we have in the love of God. Being truly thankful for all that we have is the start of being concerned for those people and places who do not enjoy the things that we, too often, take for granted. At St John’s we are a place where prayers for each other and the world take centre place.

If you want a special place to say thank you, or to remember and pray for others, then please join us at St John’s for our regular worship or for Community Prayers at 4.30p.m on the first Monday of the month. We also have a Prayer Tree at the entrance to church, so you may wish to simply come and leave a prayer request which will be included in our weekly High Legh Prayers at 9.00a.m. each Wednesday morning. If you would like a visit or to be included in our prayers at St John’s, please contact: Trish Cope; Associate Priest [email protected]; 07703 470101; 01925 754787

When Lucy was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2011, she was determined to write a novel. This she completed while she was in the hospice and only days before she died in 2016.

In accordance with Lucy’s wishes, we are now having the book - The Life of Death - published using crowd funding with the publisher, Unbound. Using Unbound, rather than a traditional publishing house allows Lucy’s book to be published as written - her words, not those of an editor - and allows us to be much more involved. Unbound, along with tremendous support from Lucy’s friends in the film business, have now launched the campaign, details of which appear on their website. The link to the Unbound page is https://unbound.com/books/life-of-death/. On the website you will see a trailer created by her friends, an extract from the book and more details about Lucy. People who knew Lucy or who are fascinated by the description of the book, can pledge their support through this link. All supporters will, at the very least, get an acknowledgement in the book and a first edition of the book.

If you require any further information please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Fresh Start The outdoor season is now well under way. The green was due to reopen on the 25th March, but we have delayed to allow the green a little more time to recover from recent bad weather. The re-seeding of the green has been very successful but we don’t want to jeopardise the time and money spent on this treatment. The first league match has our Trafford League team taking to the green on 5th April. We hope here will be no “wind chill factor” to be added.

New Development The planned new shelter is now complete and should prove to be a great asset to members and visitors in all types of weather. The club appreciates the contribution of our President, Jack Stant, who designed and built the shelter and then erected it with a lot of help from a few other club members. Thank you to these workers.

Bowling for all This season we have entered eight teams into six different leagues with additional friendly matches during some of the Wednesday social bowling sessions. For those who want it, there is ample opportunity to compete against players from other clubs as part of these teams. The indoor season finished in March. Our long mat team finished well down in the Warrington League, a disappointing result compared to recent years. Our Cheshire Villages short mat team had a difficult season losing several matches by a couple of points. Bowling in the Village Hall has continued to be popular with the evening sessions being very competitive but friendly.

Fun, Fitness & Friendship As always, the invitation goes out to anyone, beginners and experienced bowlers alike, to join us at High Legh Bowling Club. If you have not previously bowled, just come along for basic instruction and see how you get on. We have spare sets of bowls suitable for all members and you will be given plenty of encouragement. The setting is extremely pleasant and you will find a very friendly group of members who will be most pleased to see you. Matches are generally played on Monday evening, Tuesday afternoon and evening, Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday evening. Organised social bowling sessions take place on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. The green is available for practice at almost any other time. On Sat 21st April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall you can enjoy an evening of cheese and wine, “curated” by Booths - £7.50 tickets from Chris Ashton 07804 216585, [email protected]

Page 32 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 33 High Legh Robert Moffat Memorial 10k Race It was with great disappointment that we had to cancel this year’s race because of the dangerous conditions, especially after the huge amount of preparation that had been undertaken by the Race Committee supported by a fantastic group of sponsors and volunteers. With up to 600 runners their safety is our paramount consideration. We did try to find an alternative date but after a thorough examination of all the many elements (including road closures - which take 8 weeks - medical cover, availability of over 100 volunteers and carparks, competing events, hire of equipment for race timing, barriers, toilets...) it proved too complex to arrange in what is a very busy time of year. This, of course, was the reason why the race was originally set up in February/March when there is much more space in everyone’s calendars. We are already exploring contingencies for next year to try and ensure that we have an alternative date identified in case of extreme weather conditions. Although we had already borne many costs which we cannot reclaim (dated T shirts, medals, trophies, hire costs etc) we have been able to offer a partial refund and opportunity to collect a technical race shirt to those who had entered, even though race rules do not require us to do this. This is such a well-supported event, that we want to do everything we can to preserve its good reputation. So whether you are a runner, sponsor or volunteer we would like to thank you so much for being part of this fantastic event and we look forward to seeing you again next year. Nick Gerrard, Chair of the Race Committee of High Legh Community Association and Lymm
