Mead Keywords: Carnassial, Guy Wilson Cave, Landmark Analysis, Musteloids, Pleistocene ABSTRACT Landmark Analysis of Musteloid Carnassials Applied to Taxonomic Identification and Examination of Sexual Dimorphism and Regional Morphotypes by Joel Alvin Christine Guy Wilson Cave (GWC) in Sullivan County, Tennessee holds many late Pleistocene mammal fossils. Based on visual morphology, several partial mandibles with lower carnassial from GWC appeared to be musteloids. Geometric morphometrics has been successfully used to identify fragmentary fossils, so a landmark based, 2 dimensional technique was applied to identify the GWC musteloids using the lower carnassial. Digital images of several GWC fossils and of extant reference musteloids were combined using morphometric programs tpsDIG1, tpsUtil, and tpsSuper. Statistical data analysis was performed in PASW Statistics. Results successfully separated Mephitis mephitis (striped skunk) from M. macroura (hooded skunk) and Martes americana (American marten) from M. pennanti (fisher). Sex-based and geographical patterns were also found in the data. Sex separated all three species via the lower carnassial. Geographic divisions were found for Mephitis mephitis, Martes americana and M. pennanti populations that hint at interestingly unique biogeographical histories for each taxon. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author would like to thank the vertebrate paleontology faculty at East Tennessee State University – Drs. A description is given of some of the gross anatomical characteristics of the placenta of representatives of five carnivore species of the families Procyonidae and Mustelidae. Emphasis is laid on the occurrence of well-defined haemophagocytic structures in these placen- tae, which have not, hitherto, been investigated. INTRODUCTION Recently, the name haemophagous organ was proposed for a particular structure found in the raccoon {Procyon lotor lotor L.) placenta (Biggers & Creed, 1962). This highly vascular sac-like structure, which hangs into the allantoic cavity, is of macroscopic dimensions and emerges from a central antimesometrial region of the placental annulus in this procyonid carnivore (Pi. 1, Fig. 1). It increases in size and complexity until about two-thirds to three-quarters of the gestation period has elapsed, after which it regresses. Morphologically it is quite distinct from the rest of the placenta which is labyrinthine, and histo¬ logical examination shows it to be made up of a series of branching and anasto¬ mosing lamellae which consist of a thin core of foetal mesenchyme, containing foetal capillaries, lined on either side by tall foetal columnar epithelial cells. Interlamellar spaces are filled with maternal blood which gains access from the maternal side at the base of the haemophagous organ, and bathes the foetal columnar epithelium. The cells of this epithelium bear every indication of being phagocytic and appear to be concerned essentially with the ingestion of maternal blood corpuscles (Biggers & Creed, 1962; Creed & Biggers, 1963a, b).

    Introduction This animal • produces an odour that is strong enough to be carried almost 1 km on the wind • is one of the most useful small mammals that inhabit Canada’s mixed farmlands, grasslands, and forests • gathers leaves for its den by placing them under its body and then shuffling along with the leaves held between its legs • annoys farmers by raiding beehives and henhouses, but in fact almost 70 percent of a skunk’s diet is estimated to benefit people Description The striped skunk Mephitis mephitis is about the size of a cat, but has a stout body, a rather small head, short legs, and a bushy tail. Its small head fits conveniently, but sometimes too snugly, into enticing open jars. The thick, glossy fur is black, with a thin white stripe down the centre of the face and a broad white stripe beginning on the back of the head, forking at the shoulders and continuing as a white stripe along each side of the back to the base of the tail. The tail is mostly black, but the stripes may extend down it, usually to a tuft of white at the tip. The skunk has long, straight claws for digging out the burrows of mice, ripping apart old logs for grubs and larvae, and digging in the sand for turtle eggs. It moves slowly and deliberately and depends for safety not on running away or on remaining inconspicuous, but on its scent glands. Skunks belong to the weasel family Mustelidae, all of whose members have well-developed scent glands and a musky odour.

    The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. NUMBER 1830 MAY 3, 1957 A New Kinkajou from Mexico and a New Hooded Skunk from Central America BY GEORGE G. GOODWIN In a collection of mammals from northwestern Chiapas, Mexico, re- cently made by students of Walla Walla College under the supervision of Dr. Ernest S. Booth, there is a specimen of an unusually small kinkajou. The small size and long, thick, soft pelage of this specimen seem to warrant recognition by name of a geographical form inhabiting the highlands of northwestern Chiapas. A review of the Central American hooded skunks in the American Museum of Natural History collection shows that the specimens listed by J. A. Allen, 1908, 1910, from Nicaragua as Mephitis macroufa vittata differ sufficiently in cranial characters from named forms to be recognized as a distinct subspecies. At the time, Allen apparently based his diagnosis on measurements alone, without actually seeing typical specimens of. M. mn. vittata from southern Oaxaca. This new hooded skunk and the new kinkajou mentioned above are described below. Potos flavus boothi, new subspecies CHIAPAS KINKAJOU TYPE: A.M.N.H. No. 172183, skin and skull, adult female; Pueblo Nuevo, Solistahuacan, about 60 miles north of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico. Altitude approximately 7000 feet; collectors, Percy Clifton and Brian S. Bull; February 8, 1956. The type skin is in first-class condition, and the skull is complete except for a break in the supraoccipital. Feb 04, Laguna del Apoyo (LA) Our trip officially started on Feb 5, but we all landed a day early, with Paul arriving in the late morning. I asked Jose to see if he could get some help setting up nets and still find time to collect me and Mike from the airport at 9 p.m. We met up with Paul and two friends of Jose’s at a location near our hotel on the Laguna just after 10 p.m. They had caught 7 species of bats, including Common Vampire and Central American Yellow Bat. Of note Paul had also seen 3 Southern Spotted Skunks, a Vesper Rat, Common Opossum and a Central Southern Spotted Skunk (Paul Carter) American Woolly Opossum (last of which obligingly stayed around for me and Mike). We were off to a great start! Feb 05, Apoyo and Montibelli (MB) We spent the morning at Apoyo, where Mantled Howlers and Variegated Squirrel are easily seen. In the afternoon we went to Montibelli Private Reserve. We located roosting Lesser White-lined Bats on a tree trunk and some Jamaican Fruit-eating Bats hidden in leaves of a Dracaena plant (we caught both these species later too). After seeing a Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat, good variety of dry forest birds stained yellow with pollen and our first Central American Agouti, we set up a few nets and caught Greater and Pale Spear-nosed Bats along with various other common species (see list).
